No, nobody can prove it and he was always too secure in his own skin to worry about suing for libel. And Maria certainly never worried about her husband running off with men. But that’s not to say that Arnold did not receive services from men as he worked his way up to the top in his twenties, or even that his ego did not enjoy the adulation (is that unique?). But that would have stopped when he got rich, which came quickly, even if he stayed friends with some of those “sponsors.” And as far as having “boyfriends” or even being “bisexual”, I do not buy it for a second. The Paul Graham connection was political and may have been a fix, but to run off here or elsewhere reading more into it than only that is jealousy, obsessive thinking, or wishful thinking. My own two cents anyway.

Tommy was a close buddy. He used to own Mid City Gym steps away from where I grew up (literally 4 blocks away) and I remember him well. Tommy was much older than I am, as he was an older adult (in his late 50's) when I was merely a young teenager. I stayed as a member at Mid City even after he sold the gym in the late 80's. What I can tell you is that he was an honest guy. A few years back I heard from the current owners that he passed away in Florida.
Would love to know what he wrote in that book.

Over the years the rumor above got spread around, some say it was Gaines, some say Butler, but the rumor has always been that Arnold went gay for one of the guys from Pumping Iron, and Minichiello saw it.

He prescribed steroids to many bodybuilders. He said I looked good and if I came to LA to train I could be a Mr Universe in 6 months. No homo here so I wasn’t interested. We talked about the bodybuilders in California and he mentioned several well known champions who were gay. Joe, and many of the champions he trained. He listed so many that I doubted what he said was true. I enjoyed talking with him and invited him to dinner at my place. I told him I had to call my wife first. For some inexplicable reason he wasn’t interested and that was the last time I saw him.

Other than Joe Gold himself, Chris Dickerson, Jim Morris, happily married both ways people like Ken Sprague, and maybe some guys like Bob Birdsong (who publicly admitted needing to get away from a deep involvement in “Hollywood life style”) or 80s/90s both ways party animal types like Tom Prince etc., none of those guys were what I call gay or even bisexual. They were into women. But to go from there to the conclusion that no male lips ever got involved with these guys’ physiques on a transactional basis (or even a wild 70s party basis) is pure wishful hero worship (sorry). They were bodybuilders for God’s sake and, for more than a few, that aspect went/goes with the territory
A good example would be Dave Draper, a straight guy who slipped into the lifestyle for a short period via substance abuse and depression. Most of these guys are quiet about what they went through, but some have talked about it openly. Draper could be an example of a bodybuilder who VB’s blabber-mouth doctor called “gay” in the 1970’s, but he wasn’t.

What about all the gay guys who slept with women when they were young and had kids? Are they straight? Your definitions are too rigid for me. But I do agree that most “straights” never have sex with men and many or even most “gays” have never have sex with women. But there are a huge number of exceptions and I don’t necessarily think they should be called “bi”. My definition of bisexual is someone who basically has an ongoing identity of fantasizing and actually going both ways sexually.

Those two often go hand in hand. Dad attention needs might guide someone to one form of side hustle instead of to alternatives (like dealing, social media, etc).

You don't think Arnold would have sued her? He was very passive-aggressive and acted like a fag at all times, so he'd sue for sure. She knew better than to open that can of worms.
I agree that it is plausible that she might have had an inkling of that side of things but just did not go there in her book (too hot to handle). However, that would in no way mean she thought he was “bisexual”. She had day to day evidence of his virility as well as facing the threat that other women posed to her own relationship with him.
