I added guitars.

Looking at jewellery of late aswell but prices are ‘meh’ at the auctions. Still too much money for what grade things were.

Buying a boat or an RV sounds like a massive headache, even for a good price.  Far better to rent.

Lots of hidden costs in owning these luxuries for sure.

Like cars they depreciate in value as soon as you buy.

Even renting them is pricey.

I bought an RV back in 2017 and probably should’ve sold it during the pandemic. It’s cool to have though with the kids and all, but it is a headache for the maintenance.

The engine doesn't work.

Bhanky is not a mechanic despite having hydraulic car lifts in his garage.

No doubt Bhanky had one of those rolling tool storage units filled with every conceivable professional mechanic's tool from Snap-On.

But he himself doesn't know how to fix anything.  He hires a mechanic.

Buy a boat and get one mile per gallon if you're lucky. Docking it then dry docking it off season costs a fortune.  Selling a used boat is a big loss.

Outside of your house what material possession have you bought and sold and made  a worthwhile profit?

I’m not disagreeing with what you’ve said, but there are few goods you can buy, use and make money off of.

Talking about the rate of depreciation.  Boats depreciate insanely. In this economy used cars are holding their value pretty well.

True about the house. I bought a house 21 years ago for around 257K and it's valued at 700K now.

Car market is about to have a hard time.

Consider all those in 2021 who took a typical 3yr car lease and are ending now. For me I use Audi R8, Audi RS6 and Audi RS7 as my barometer and there is a total lack of buyers at 6 figures for these cars.

Credit access to vehicles has been reduced greatly vs 2021. The 100k car loan that was easy to get in 2021 is now a 50k car loan. It’s ok for the more normal cars but some higher end stuff where high debt consumers hang around has been rug pulled pretty much.

I got the same appreciation on mine.  Bought 25 years ago for $200k.

Approximately 4.6% rate of appreciation per year.

Of course we are at the peak of market.  Values in my area have fluctuated a lot over the years up and down.

A few years ago and the rate of return was only around 3%.

We also should take into the calculation how much money we've spent maintaining/improving the house and interest paid on the mortgage.

All told the appreciation is not great but we have to live somewhere right?

There's a large Airstream RV dealer near me that opened just before the pandemic.

Those go for $100k for the lowest priced model easy.  Top end RVs.

They must be hurting now.

Nah, got 2 nm per gal on an offshore boat I had with gm350 engine. I get a lot more than that out of my f100 Yamaha or 40 hp Honda

Much better to steal one for the week and put it back in the dock before weekend.

Also appears they have the least problems. So many lawsuits and issues with the newer travel trailers and fifth wheels. What’s odd is there are literally hundreds of brands of travel trailers now. Don’t know if those are manufacturers creating several classes of different companies are what.
