Title: US Banning the Best Antivirus Software - Kaspersky!
Post by: obsidian on June 20, 2024, 09:56:26 PM
I've used Kaspersky for decades. The best software out there. Does not bog down your machine. Catches all the malware.

I have more than a year left on the subscription. I'll have to see if there is a way to buy this via VPN in the future. I have not plans to switch to anything else.

US to ban popular anti-virus software – Reuters
The use of programs created by Russia-based Kaspersky Labs is reportedly seen as a threat to America’s national security

Washington is set to announce plans to prohibit the sale of anti-virus software made by the Russian cybersecurity company Kaspersky Labs in the United States, according to a Reuters report which cited sources.

People familiar with the matter told the outlet that the company’s close ties to the Russian government were considered by the Biden administration as posing a “critical risk.” The sources cited Washington’s concerns over the software’s privileged access to computer systems could allow it to steal sensitive information from American users, install malware or withhold critical updates.

According to the report, the Russian cybersecurity firm could also be added to a trade restriction list, which effectively prevents a company’s US suppliers from selling it. Such a move could mean a massive hit to the company’s reputation and international sales, the sources said.

The restrictions will reportedly come into effect on September 29, giving the businesses 100 days to find alternatives. Downloads of software updates, resales and licensing of the product will also be barred. Kaspersky Labs will be banned in the US 30 days after the announcement of the restrictions. The Commerce Department will notify the companies before taking enforcement action against them.

If the department only adds the Russian entity to its trade restriction list, the damage will be largely reputational, Reuters said. If foreign units are added, the move could significantly hamper the cybersecurity company’s supply chain, it said.

Sellers and resellers who violate the restrictions will face fines, with potential criminal cases being brought by the Justice Department in the event of willful violations. Software users will not face any legal penalty but are advised to stop using it.

In 2017, the US Department of Homeland Security banned all federal agencies from using Kaspersky software, citing national security concerns but providing no evidence. Company founder and Chief Executive Eugene Kaspersky denounced the move as “baseless paranoia at best” at the time, with the company filing a lawsuit, which was later dismissed by the court.

According to Reuters’ sources, there was a “significant back and forth” with Kaspersky before the ban, which proposed mitigating measures instead of an outright ban.

Founded in 1997, the cybersecurity and anti-virus provider Kaspersky is headquartered in Moscow and operated by a holding company in the UK. According to the firm, it operates in more than 200 countries and territories and has 400 million users around the world.

What does the "ban" do in practise anyway, more just symbolic and on government machines?

So what.

Heaps of options. Down here we don’t use that.

Expect everything a Russian and Chinese to get blocked. It’s doesn’t matter, we have shit 100x better despite what the spastics on here try and make you believe.

At least on Western internet we have cookies which force you to allow them to track you so it’s basically an acceptable virus LOL.

A couple of decades ago I saw a picture of Bill Gates and his lap top.  He had a little piece of duct tape over his camera lens.  He’s the Microsoft guy not trusting that his camera can’t be remotely turned on.

You phone listens too. Had my phone on my table in a restaurant.  I struck up a conversation with a table of girls and found out they were traveling nurses.  They told me their agency set them up with the near by hospital and with a hotel. The next day on Facebook I got an ad for an agency that finds accommodations for traveling nurses.

When home computers were brand new there was basically one anti virus available. I swear they created viruses so they could claim they fixed them. Of course you had to keep buying the new version to keep up with the new attacks.  Now there are free antivirus programs that update for free on their own.

Stuff like some video services and anti viruses have complete access to all your data.  Google sells your searches to the sellers of stuff they think you’re interested in to purchase.  I have cancer so I google stuff about it.  What shows up on my facebook ads? Stuff about cancer like lawyer services for those dealing with it.

It’s disturbing that we are unknowingly giving access to our searches and even our cloud storage to unknown entities.

No need for Kaspersky Anti-Virus when there is the Covid vax.

I have tape too ever since Zuckerberg taped over his camera. But not on the phone which would make more sense.

Should use a VPN too, may be leaving embarrassing porn traces lol But the Tor browser is just a bit too slow

Okay, can someone settle this for me? I could swear my devices "listen" to speech. Is this some paranoid dream or real?

100% they already have AI listening profiling you from your conversation, not just your searches, AI isn't new to intelligence community, how long some apps have had access to you for commercial purpose unsure, but criminals and terrorists have known that their phones were potential listening devices for decades, over ten years ago I could dial into your phone and listen to your entire conversation with someone.  there is no privacy anywhere in this age unfortunately.

They listen and communicate through sites you stay signed in through. I told my gardener to install some border edging while in the back yard and my phone in my pocket. Now I get ads on my computer for the different types of edging to install.

As a first level I recommend going to Android (if that's what you're using) and disabling microphone access to all apps.

Yes, they listen to you, but more to serve relevant ads than anything else.

Careful with VPNs. Find a company with full transparency, i.e, the names of the owners are on their website and they are real people. NordVPN is one of the most popular out there. Noone knows who owns it though. And they have complete, unfettered access to your data. In such a case it might be better not using a VPN at all, might as well trust your government.

That still leaves the microphone. Just remove it from the usb port and plug it in only whenever necessary.

Bought a bunch of these camera covers off eBay- they just stick over the lens and you can turn on and off at will.

As for listening though our phones - 24/7. Snowden said this was happening at least 10 years ago.

Use something like Brave browser, a VPN like Surfshark and admit you have a porn problem and you'll be good to go, lol

I've had conversations with people in the house and then got recommendations on Youtube for that subject the next day.
