Just got back from watching a junior tennis tournament - fucking disgraceful behaviour by at least 3 parents (one of whom was straight up bullying their kid's opponent).
Was wondering what you Getbiggers have seen in terms of sports parents? Back home in Australia I never really noticed a lot of bad types on a rugby field. That was decades ago though - people are a little different now.

I used to referee at a wrestling tournament. All school ages. From high school seniors to kindergarteners. The tournament was to raise money for some charity.... inner city youth or some shit like that....
Anyway, the fathers of the littlest wrestlers were the worst human beings ever; you could see them reliving their own (failed) hopes and dreams through their sons. You could see the joy of wrestling being crushed within those little kids. Just the worst parental behavior, poor sportsmanship, punishing a kid for losing, anger, hostility towards judges, referees and opposing teams etc... it was gross to watch over and over again.
Im sure all sports have it though. Seems like middle age, middle class, overweight adults are willing to lay it all on the line over a little league baseball game.
I wait and see what my kids like. I offer them suggestions. They can take it or leave it. Whenever they decide they like something I cautiously support and nurture their interest in it. And I make a conscious effort to not get too involved.

My kids have done three(four if you count swimming) and the worst was flag football. Baseball and soccer were not bad at all, but the first year I coached my youngest in flag football it blew my mind that people from opposing teams would show up and film midweek practices of other teams. It was crazy. Also, the parents of the kids who were decent, were terrible. Hooting and hollering, you could tell this little kid outrunning all the other 7 year olds was the highlight of their life.

Combat sports parents are the worst. As you're pushing the kids into the hurt game just because of your own inadequacies.
I've seen parents go autistic having their kids train 2-3 hours day, hard boxing sparring, doing competitions every weekend and flying out across the world for bjj competitions.
Then they get a rude awakening when the kid is 16 and starts getting destroyed as the talent pool increases.
A few years ago I met this homeless street kid, tweaker, in Portland. He was always hanging outside of a 7-11 asking for change or cigarettes.. he looked like he was in really good shape and I asked him how the hell did he end up a homeless tweaker
He told me he was a professional boxer. He was undefeated, won all of his fights by knockout. I didn't believe him because i had never heard of him and im a pretty big boxing fan. Anyway he said his father pushed him into boxing , heaped pressure on him and he just cracked. Decided it wasn't what he wanted to do with his life so he left home and boxing for good and is happier being homeless than being forxed to do something he didn't want to do...
I think his name was Sean Graziano.... ill try to look up his pro record.. if i can remember his correct name.
EDIT: His name is Jeremiah Graziano. Have no idea at all what became of him.

Any sport that is competitive can go wild with a shitty parent, but hockey makes good parents awful.
It's a sport that is crazy expensive to play. Parents are literally remortgaging their homes to pay for ice time etc. Because ice time is so expensive the entire family is forced to practice at insane hours, literally 5 am on a saturday and so on just to save a few dollars. Competitive play in Canada usually involves road trips that requires hotels and all that. And the culture is very elitist where a 9 year old kid is required to have a full suit to walk into the arena. So many families are insanely stressed, including not just the athlete and their parents, but often the siblings/grand parents whoever.
It requires learning complex skills at a very early age. You won't get anywhere if your kid hasn't in relative terms mastered skating and stick handling by age 10. This requires pushing your kid endlessly on tasks that aren't near as fun as shooting hoops or throwing a ball.
Because the parents are constantly carting their kids around to the many practices and games and spending so much money they feel entitled. Their kid basically "owes them" for the rest of their lives. This means kids are afraid to tell their parents they want to stop playing, so you have unmotivated kids who require being screamed at to move.
Because the sport is so skilled, a below average kid can look light years ahead, compare with parents who are less aggressive in pushing their kids. This inflates their parents into thinking their kids are way way way better than they actually are, and that it's all because they are "pushing them".
Then the kid gets into age where fighting and slamming someone into the boards is actually allowed. All of a sudden the parent sees their kid being exposed for their subpar speed, durability and strength. The natural move of course is teaching their kid to be as dirty and aggressive as they can. Which means the good parents with skilled kids, are watching the refs turn a blind eye as their kid becomes a victim of dirty hits. So even the good parents turn to toxic shit, after they drive little Gord to the emerge with a broken jaw.

Wrestling was never a big thing in Australia but I could imagine there'd be some bad egg parents in an environment like that.

I know nothing about hockey, but it sounds even worse than tennis - another pricey, high skill level sport.

Wtf. There's entire YouTube communities dedicated to this shit. If my daughter started this, I'd be calling for the men in white coats because there's no fkin way I'm forking out for the real thing. My mate Neil's daughter is into competing and he has spent a small fortune setting up stables. She didn't even go university because she wanted to join team GB showjumping.
He did exactly what these parents did and had a public meltdown accusing the entire GB Equestrian Federation officials of nepotism and some kind of snobbery because he's not generational equestrian whatever. Absolutely lost it; and the guy is otherwise very rational, cold and disciplined. Started threatening officials etc. He was more upset than she and the ex wife was.
