Dumb ..just like these slapping contests
-
Infact I always disliked the most people who trained in full contact karate like from Oyama. I found most to be very one sided in their approach
Each to his own

It's actually a very traditional style except for a lot of sparring.

Actually it's a hybrid style.
Oyama first trained in Shotokan but also later Goju Ryu
Nowadays there's even more off shoot styles in this direction.
Oyama was influenced by other styles but of course he went in his own direction.
If you can call his style traditional is debatable.
I can call Judo traditional but you'll argue it's not " ju jutsu"
I think you get my point.

Judo is Kano's version of jiu jitsu. Judo is a sport. Jiu jitsu is a self defense system.
Japanese jiu-jitsu vs judo. What are the differences?

Some people really enjoy pain and destruction. This, slaps, bare nuckle..
If it makes them happy then be it.

Yet as a "sport" it beat traditional Ju Jutsu.
Not bad :)

I'd have to see what rules were in play for that contest.
Most likely there were restrictions on certain techniques to ensure judo's win.

Randori or free fighting is one aspect which made Judo superior, BJJ adopted a type of randori or free practice.
We saw this also from Master Tomiki who formed his own Randori in his system of Aikido.
He was a Judoka under Kano.
If there was anything that helped Judo, it was in my opinion Randori.
