I did a Savage Race Saturday.

Normally, not a big deal, barely would have to train for one.  However, Friday night went to Metallica/Pantera, got all banged up, and got up early hung over with little sleep.

One of the obstacles was sponsored by Goruck, and it was to carry a 45lb sandbag.  They said you could pick one or two.  Since I've done GR and always like a challenge.  I took 2 for 90lbs.  Usually have to carry 1000 ft or something.  After I took the two, got 20 feet passed and heard the guy say to another racer "yeah, drop off is about a half mile through the woods".......was......not fun.

Then did Metallica Sun night.

Gassed.  Will start working out again tonight.

Did you do the sprint or the longer run?

I did the 6 mile one.  25 obstacles.

Most were easy enough, but a couple were very challenging - in fact, one obstacle I failed 6 times before I gave up, but I did not see anyone complete it.

Found a video of it - it's at the 16:25 mark

This guy got it EASY - however, the part where we had to put the dowel in was swinging a lot more.

Awesome, Grape.

Wow, that is some incredibly hard stuff.

How do you carry the sandbags?

These were the "Jerry Can" GR sandbags....started farmers carry style, then would clean to shoulders, and also bear hug.  Kept rotating.  There was a stretch of path for about 100 feet where they put ropes across, like a web you had to go through - I clean/press threw them a bunch of times through that spot.

Is GoRuck an organization like Crossfit?

Is GoRuck an organization like Crossfit?

Goruck is a company started by ex special forces guys that originally centered around rucking.  They sold pretty much indestructible equipment that was expensive, but had lifetime guarantees.

They did events that were centered around stepping outside your comfort zone, working as a team, and exceeding your limits.  The events were run by ex-military cadres - with the event ranging in difficulty - some were 6 hrs (basic), some 14(tough), some 24 hrs straight (heavy).

Soul Crusher got into them and challenged anyone on the board to do one.  I was the only dumbass here who did it.

They since grown to expand the product line, the events, and co-sponsor some stuff at crossfit and such.

I can say with confidence that the easiest goruck event is harder than any OCR, outside of maybe the Spartan Beast at Killington.

Last one I did with SC was last year, we did the 14 hour one, rested two hours, than did the six.

When I originally took up the challenge, I planned on diving in headfirst with a heavy in 2017, but I tore my hip flexor and IT band training, and had to skip.  I've done a couple Toughs, basics, and two 50 mile+ "star courses".  Still need to do a Heavy.

Cool stuff.^

Thanks.

It really is.  The team aspect is awesome, and you really find you're able to do more than you thought possible.  Very humbling and satisfying all at the same time.

Bought a couple used 1000D Cordura Army dufflebags in brand new condition.

Loaded one to 100lbs but it will hold up to 200lbs methinks.

My sandbags look like this so they have tons of hoist options.

Side handles, two short ones on each side, and a long one that goes end to end.

I think the ones you are doing are awkward, but I mean that in a good way.

Hits stabilizers and makes it really hard.

They are really odd object lifting.

The next day I feel it a lot in my traps and upper back

After you get it off the ground you do a movement like a power clean to get it up to the shoulder.

Some day I would like to get 200 lbs.

That would be impressive.  Sandbag weight actually feels heavier to me than regular weight if that makes any sense.

Couple variations I've done for conditioning:

Sandbag toss over 30" box / go over box / repeat x 50  I think I used 80lbs for this last time

Sandbag ground to shoulder + slam  x 5 / 50 yd sprint   repeat 10 x

Sandbag turkish get up (TGU is my least favorite exercise so I rarely do)

I have a couple of those, different sizes. They are exhausting.

Totally.

The 120lb one is a tank.

Lifting a sandbag from floor to shoulder is very much like doing a power clean, for me at least.

You get the bag moving and keep it moving explosively.

If your technique gets off a bit you get stuck and then it becomes a struggle, using brute force, to get the bag the rest of the way from chest to shoulder.
