I remember me & another guy trained in my basement & set up a Makiwara.
We also had a bag which we filled with sand from a building site, it was rock hard when the sand settled.
We covered that bag with blood stains & although we toughened our knuckles i realised it was how your wrist is positioned to avoid injury..not just hardening the hands.
where you hit is important too.
I learned this in Wado Ryu

The primary traditional closed hand karate strike is to the solar plexus, a soft target.
The bare-knuckle boxing on youtube is mainly headshots.
Interesting.
Hitting a bag without gloves requires proper wrist position.

100%. and i remember training in Wado Ryu which is Karate & Shindo Yoshin Ryu Ju Jitsu & a guy just thrust a finger into my throat just above the collar bone which is unprotected & soft showing me how it can really be effective & it is dangerous.
punching that solid bag tought me more than i learned in any Dojo. Sure push ups on your knuckles strengthens the wrists but punching that bag was outstanding training.
Of course this was some years ago when i was in great shape ..

although a lot of muscles are involved in punching, i found that using a Tricep Bar with a Parallel grip is the best ( in a close grip bench press).
I still do this & i love it for overhead triceps french press. I find an EZ bar can cause elbow pain.

I have two of these and use them for farmers walks.
