So what sort of weight are you guys using on these?
-
I can't remember exactly but around 225. I always used them as a warm up, not as any sort of mass or strength builder.

That's a good weight to use on such an exercise..
-
I don't use the snatch anymore but I used the Split snatch when I did. I would have no use for exercise.

I´m just wondering about the load on the spine on the overhead press, then the spine must spread an equal load over the whole length, is there a difference to the back squat where most get lower back problems?
I want to equally spread the load & this is why i think the overhead squat might be a good exercise.
with a sensible weight of course ... ;)

I never felt any issues with my lower back. I did feel pressure in my shoulders if I didn't warm up fully.

Gives much disconfort and soreness in my piriformis muscles afterwards. Have to ice them at the end of the workout. Maybe due to the enhanced stabilization required.
-
Christ I couldn`t do those on my best day with even a broomstick. :(
The first time I tried snatching 95 pounds the bar came crashing down on my head and almost killed my dumbass.
After that the only thing I did that resembled any Olympic lifting was Dead Hang Cleans.........used to love those babies.

I find slightly elevating my heels helps to keep a more stable body position & deeper squat.
-
I congratulate guys that can do this exercise. I don't have the mobility. I couldn't do a full squat holding a 135lb bar in the snatch grip over head. You need some serious mobility to be able to accomplish that. It was the reason I used the split snatch when I was on a snatch kick years ago.

a sensible weight has to be used..it´s not like a normal squat & if doing say 10 reps with good form you can´t train like a powerlifter.
I see it as an exercise to train stability & dare i say it "core strength"

Thank you for the advice. Nevertheless i have short femurs, i go deeper than Platz, minus the poundages.

Yes everyone is different...just what works for me.
Just a slight raise but I'm just getting the technique polished at the moment using just an Olympic bar

May be a stance issue as well, I found I really had to points knees and toes outward to get that deep stretch.

I wouldn't want the mobility to do them. Too much risk for very minimal gain if any.

I'm 64 & can do them - only I don't as I the benefits to risk ratio
isnt worth it to me & I can back squat upwards of 450lbs & thats
far more beneficial for my legs than 135lbs overhead squats.

Yeah, why risk getting hurt with no benefit of hypertrophy?
-
I don't see it as a replacement for Squats but it has other benefits as an accessory exercise.

His shoulder strength is impressive. Have you tried overhead squats yet? For me personally the shoulders were always the limiting factor.

yes i am doing them but as i wrote before i started just with an empty Olympic Barbell.
I am using 60 KG at the moment which is OK for learning i think.
-
It's definitely an exercise that has to be built up to perfection. Learning the movement first.

How are your shoulders feeling? Notice an increase in stability when doing bench?

I definitely feel that my neck & shoulders are under constant tension during the exercise & I feel it's positive for strength & posture.
When doing standing french presses with my triceps bar I'm definitely able to concentrate more on the exercise due to more stamina & muscle control..if that makes sense 💪
About 8 years ago I had a prolapsed disc in my neck C6/C7...was a long recovery
Benches are feeling good too so I think there's been benefits & carry over from the overhead squats.
You do the strong man stuff ..do you do these overhead walks in the video?
As I wrote I'm using it more for overall posture, stamina, strength especially in my upper body.
I've always had a good strong base in my legs just from nature & don't go down easily 🙂

I agree about more stable shoulders and upper body from OHS. You should notice some increased mobility in the hips as well.
I never did the overhead walks with the bands, I have used a barbell, dumbells, sandbags and even the stone.

yes & positive for my lower back & posture.
you´re a Scotsman at heart big boy.. lifting the stone & Highland Games.
I wrote some years ago that not far from me they even have Highland Games here in Germany.

I trained for Highland games for a few months until the group lost it's training field then moved too far south for me to train with them. I felt comfortable with everything except the stone throws, I could never get the spinning and throw timing down so that was frustrating for me.

I used to go to the Games every year where I lived as a kid.
Was always held in a local park which was big enough. Had to pay entry money so we sneaked in through the long grass & bushes.
I did enjoy watching the events & some of the competitors looked like Giants to me as a kid.
They didn't have ripped up physiques but were strong 💪

Even the little fellas are strong. We went to an event here and all of the families played their bagpipes and songs, huge festival. Tons of fun.

I reckon with my Kilt & accent I could pull some serious pussy in the states😃

I am going to make a goal to be able to do one OH squat with a pvc pipe.
If I can do that, my ankle, hip and shoulder mobility is on point.
And I can tell you right now, they are not on point.

I started with an empty Olympic Bar which was about right to give some slight tension & feeling.

Whatever you do, don't try it empty handed, just not going to be right. I started with one of those wooden sticks that old ladies use to swing back and forth and say they're warming up.

I will use a pvc pipe, or a bella bar (35lbs) that I actually own.

I did one arm DB overhead squats today but i think the two handed version might be better for me.

I felt unstable using DBs unless it was a one handed DB snatch.
