Title: Single Arm Deadlifts
Post by: Donny on October 11, 2024, 11:32:42 PM
Aside from competitors using these in old or odd lifts competitions..does anyone use the Barbell variation?

"The single-arm deadlift increases strength and stability in the entire body, while correcting muscular imbalances. Single-arm deadlifts demand more balance and engage different stabilizing muscles from a standard deadlift."

I have done these in the past as a break from regular deads. Different feel.

What about with a sandbag?

If you do these with the bar at your side, they are called suitcase deadlifts (yes works well with a sandbag with handles).

I have used them for warmup.

One of the only lifts that I used barbell clips on. Can get wonky if you're not set perfectly. Have you tried DB cleans or snatches?

Not so much DB cleans but I liked using a barbell, sometimes I experimented with hang cleans too with a press.
Snatches I've never really tried..Well not seriously
But yeah..cleans I've always liked 👍

These are what I've mainly done..
Or a clean from the floor to chest but no press, I found it a great warm up.

Snatches look like a lot of practice is needed..much more skill involved than people think.

I would definitely like to investigate her snatch 😋

Meaning using only one arm?

I tried using two arm with two dumbbells for clean and push press.  Maybe because I was unskilled in the movement it seemed the injury potential was high.  Seen two styles on youtube. Those that started with the dumbbells at the side and others had the dumbbells in front of them. Like I said I didn't know what I was doing but having them in front seemed more natural for the movement.

I absolutely hate barbell snatches, never been good at them even with some crooked nose Russian screaming at me.

Only one arm, one DB. Check out how the strongmen do the lift. The two DB ones felt better to me than a barbell, but still felt weird.

I feel a hernia just looking at it.

You just can't go that heavy, you're only using one hand. The most awkward part is trying to get the balance/center right.

What benefit is there to doing it other than being to do that lift better?

I would say nothing really. Just some grip training which could obviously be done with other lifts. It's a unique lift that not a lot of people see in the gym.
