Title: This is the quality of physiques I came up with.
Post by: Wiggs on November 01, 2024, 04:27:09 PM
I'm sure I come off as a bodybuilding snob sometimes and that's ok. Within this link, https://www.instagram.com/reel/DB10wtXib7g/?igsh=OGFsZ3JxeWc2ajRr

The original video is from the beginning of the 1996 Mr. Olympia video. I remember this because I was 16 years old and bought it and watched it literally dozens of times.

Looking back 28 years later. Even though these guys are smaller overall, the quality is just outstanding. These guys are smaller but better. All that extra weight did not equate to a better physique just a bigger and unhealthier physique. Most important for the conversation a less detailed and aesthetic physique. The evolution of a bodybuilder is in the small refinements, not useless globs of muscle. Between 92 and 99 was peak physiques in bodybuilding. Thankfully,  bodybuilding is trending in the right direction. Because all their current male champions would have fit in well in the 90s. Keep it in mind it's been us as fans in mass that have held their feet to the fire with the guts, lack of posing,  conditioning etc... There's a demographic within bodybuilding I call them size queens. Guys like Palumbo that lead the freak parade and take the art out of bodybuilding with grotesque muscle. These are the guys that say, "Remember, it's body-BUILDING. " Implying that as time goes on bodybuilders should be getting bigger with the same lines and conditioning they have at a much lower weight.  Impossible most of the time. Anyway,  it seems the ball is back is the shape guys court for now. We gotta keep our boots on their throats because these guys unchecked would ruin bodybuilding.  They don't have the genetics or the artistic acumen so they slap on globs of muscle and become counter culture within a subculture. We've seen what that looks like, let's never go back. I think if the open guys all came about 5-7% lighter, which would give an illusion of being bigger, it would be ideal for today.

Anyway, those are my thoughts...Or as you guys post now,  "Dear Diary..."

It will never "go back" because of GH among other drugs, so even the smaller physiques will have a different quality to them.

I don't believe we can control how we develop much, it's not artistry, it's genetics.

Some of the fans and other pros say Yates ruined bodybuilding, that was the starting point for modern physiques.
