Title: Do You Think Pro Bodybuilding As A Profession Is Dead?
Post by: King Shizzo on December 30, 2024, 11:12:37 AM
Seriously. In my case, maybe I grew out of it with age, but I've had no desire to follow contests for years now. I have no idea who 98% of today's pros or top amateurs are, nor do I care.

The magazines are gone. The websites can't be doing much better.  I could be wrong, but I highly doubt that sponsorships for bodybuilders are what they used to be, especially when Joe blow, the influencer, can make a company a lot more.

It's always been a niche hobby/sport, but I don't see the allure or point to actually become a pro.

Am I wrong, or is it at an all-time low?

The internet killed pro bodybuilding the same way it killed magic. Once you reveal how it's done it's not interesting.

Years ago, you used to know who 3rd tier pros were.

Now, everyone is 3rd tier.

That’s ironic….coming from a 5th tier Getbig poster.

I do follow. Purely out of faith. Remember when you used to know it was Dillet, Kevin or Dorian just by the silhouette?
Physiques were so striking back then. It was as if, yeah we didn't get the top tier genetics because they went into pro football or whatever. But we got people whom had something special and trained. There were people in the 80s with amazing pro level physiques that still never got a card. Now... well there is room for improvement, but I know that we will see another decade of something special just gotta wait

I don't like seeing people post that picture. You know the ones it's true: do you want to be remembered for that or for sorting yourself out mate? Please start training and a journey on here of redemption. Imagine the arc of your story on here since you insist on posting.... why not post self improvement to show the bad and ugly became something beautiful?

I try to avoid his threads. Especially after he grassed up Josh to cops and grassed up a UK lad here, 38. I was kind of put off didn't expect a grass on here. Just be wary what you say to that guy. Don't ever give that guy any info on yourself. I'm not joking

bodybuilding isn't dying… humanity is.

this spectacle of, and exercise in filth and depravity wouldn't even exist in a modestly moral landscape.

u got the champ walking around lumpy and infected… lol

shit show

The human physique has always been admired. Nothing has changed in that regard. Except steroids. They would have used back then.

As to the other question, it's been dying for 15, maybe 20 years now. Gone or going are the big guys that kept it going and made it seem grand. The supplement dollars are drying up. Youtube showed what did and didn't work. They don't really need a show presence anymore to pedal creatine, protein powder, multi-vitamins, etc.....

Other forms of social media have curtailed real interaction with the pros. And it's allowed them to be so spread out, we don't even get good gossip anymore.

Even the schmoes, the lifeblood of bodybuilding, seem old, tired, and disinterested anymore :(.

with hindsight it was dying once Haney went

I liked dorian because he was a working class brit who went America and cleaned up

but physique wise I preferred beril fox, beckles, buchanan and clairmonte

I think once dorian raised the bar to size - Coleman took it on but I never like his look.

synthol and skin abuse did for me in terms of the look. although al beckles once collapsed from slin usage. Also once nubbin came along it killed much of the sport for me.

don't get me wrong I am lucky to know some top level pros as mates and they are great but I [prefer the O 1989 as the pinnacle.

The whole allure of bodybuilding was always its underground and niche nature to me. Why does something have to be popular to be interesting? Why does anything valuable have to always be measured in cash? I'm an idealist  :D

Many thought Serge Nubret died from an insulin OD. Before he died promoters and seminar bookers said he was always demanding drugs wherever he went.
In the Golden Age they already did a bunch of prescription stims, coke and other narcotics. Dave Draper didn't get into PI because he was way off his head on alcohol and PCP and whatever else.

Its the over popularity of gyms & bodybuilding that has been the catalyst
For the downfall of bodybuilding - The Internet hasn't helped.

Bodybuilding must be a lucrative career as there are so many professional bodybuilders now.

And they all drive exotic cars and live in mansions.

It’s evolved. I’d say it’s probably more popular than ever if you count the social media influencers and people like that. Print media is dead. I don’t follow it anymore, shit I didn’t even realize that a few recent Mr O had died, but I think social media has blown it up.

No it's just morphing. They turned bodybuilding into a bringer show, similar to when a top Hollywood bar agrees to let a rock band play if they bring 500 fans in at cover and 2 drink minimum. That's how Corey Feldman makes a living.  It's a a guaranteed income as opposed to the risk of not selling tickets.

So they added a million divisions with a million competitors knowing each one has probably 20-100 people or more that will come see their "little champion and all she's overcome to be here". Then all the athletes have social media presence that might guarantee 1000 fans each, how many competitors at the O total? Bikini, figure, open classic, men's fuckin physique. They only have to fill 10,000 seats. That's why it's sold out a year early, especially VIP.

And they make ticket package combinations so you have to sit through everything. It goes on for HOURS and HOURS.

But that's what makes financial sense. It's reliable.

So bodybuilding is alive, but it's morphed into a business.

The days where the Weider's would risk it all at Madison Square Garden, no expo, and ONLY men's open Olympia. He has to gauge the ticket price and risk it all. No social media, no mainstream press or promotion and only the magazines, But it's that risk that made it special. No you'll never see that again which is why you'll never care about an open Olympian again. No one cares.

I mean imagine having 4 hours of opening acts before seeing a fucking rock band?  But the promoter wanted to secure the finances so did a four hour bringer show of shit bands? There'd be a fucking riot.

But we sit there through the Ken Dolls. Hours of it. Then the bikini.

So man it's more alive than ever.  But it's become corporate bullshit. Don't forget to smash the like button.

And all need GoFundMe accounts when they have a medical emergency.

It would be worth more than a Gender Studies degree.

At the place I went they had a "Recreation and Leisure" major.

My girlfriend at the time took it.
