The place is awesome. I trained there about 20 years ago (maybe 25). You could train (and they have literally any piece of equipment you can imagine) and after you could eat. The had an excellent cafeteria where you could get anything from a protein shake to baked or grilled chicken - pretty much anything you want.

Wow..cool....thanks Nat.

Red's great. He came in for a weekend w/ Boyer for the AOBS dinner one year.
Spent a SAT w/ he and Boyer. Both guys are just great people...
Red spoke about making upgrades to your gym every year, no exceptions. And of course he grew his in a massive way.
Our local gym still has the same shitty power-racks from 20+ years ago. Horrible one's too. ::)

This is one of the cajuns who work out at the best gym in the bayou.

At first I was like "meh", then kept scrolling.
Place is insane.
Must need like 1000 members just to cover overhead lol.

Is Red still alive?
Yes. He's still running things at the gym but I don't see him working out any more. But even 10 years ago I saw him sometimes early mornings 4 am.

Ol Red is a legend. Worked at the airport as a teenager where he houses some of his old Biplanes. Heard a story that he once crashed his plane and broke his legs but he was more concerned about finding his hair piece and was army crawling around looking for it. Tough old dude.
-
He made a smart move opening the gym and going with the city. He has made some serious cash with that facility.
-
Incredible facility. Even a restaraunt in it!

No disrespect to Lerille but the Mr America from 1959 for several years wasn't judged as a pure bodybuilding contest. Black guys could win only Most Muscular back then. Larry Scott competed in the IFBB and not the AAU. Guys who I didn't think were the best: 1959: Harry Johnson
1960: Lloyd Lerille
1963: Vern Weaver
1964: Val Vasilieff
1965: Jerry Daniels

You just disrespected all those guys, Vince.

Damn them Rednecks have a heck of a gym!
-
Towards the end of Hansen's podcast he reads Lerille's pre-contest routine.
A lot.

There were 5 gyms in my small town, not counting karate gyms {2} {4500 population] now after covid we're down to 2. the large one has 1500 plus members. they must be doing good because they are always adding new equipment plus they just added a large outside area.

I think we can all read between the lines here Vince, so I will ask this for you.
Does Red have a bicep supination machine in his gym? If so who’s the manufacturer?

Harry should have won way back in 1955, but they wanted to give it to the first guy who graduated from college at the time. what do you think of bob gajda over sergio a few years later.

Yeh - it was awesome to train and then relax and eat an amazing meal.
The thing is - Lafayette in the 60’s was a VERY SMALL town (it may not have even been an actual incorporated city back then. I lived there in the 90’s and it was still just a small town. I don’t think anyone would say it’s a big city even now.
Red is a helluva businessman to grow that place in such a TINY market.
Red - and Don Smith in Baton Rouge (was good friends with Dons and author=Donny link=topic=696286.msg10341690#msg10341690 date=1736528110]

63$ a month apparently, is this a good price?

Lots of cheaper options for just weight training like 24 hour fitness, SNAP, but they are about 5% the size of Reds and you obviously won't get the swimming pools, sauna and other amenities. You might think it is a good price but that depends on what you want out of the gym.
-
Guy I used to work with married Al Copeland ex wife. He doesn’t work anymore - lol
BB related because Al was a juice head - lol

If I was still around I would definitely train there. You really can’t compare that to any of the chain gyms

For what they got it's really good but understand some things cost extra.

Crossfit gyms charge over a hundred a month.
