Title: Why can't BB's endorse like this
Post by: onlyme on May 04, 2006, 12:51:07 PM
Did you hear how much George Foreman got for selling out his rights to the George Foreman Grill.  $137 million.  That is after how many years making many millions of dollars (upwards of $40 million a year George made himself from sales).  I heard awhile back the grill has sold over $1 billion in units.

Also, Hulk Hogan was the orginal person they asked to endorse the grill.  He said no so they got George.  You think Hulk s kicking himself in the ass.  Now Hulk is coming out with his own grill.  I would say a little late.

Why can't pro BB do this.  They need to market themselves more

problem is pro bb'ing doesn't have the mainstream appeal that boxing or pro wrestling does.

It's more fun for them to spend all day posting on Getbig.com, win fixed contests, and insinuate that they are "part owners" of BB.com.  ;D

 Let it go ::)

Yes an awesome product.  But, having George's name and his appeal speaks allot of dollars.  Plus, when this thing came out he was out of retirement fighting again and getting his reputaion way up there with everyone cause he was an older man beating younger guys.  His "hero and idol" status grew 1000 fold.  It was perfect timing on everyones part.

How many physique competitors (and wannabes) own a George Foreman grill?

Someone shoulda bought a bunch of those things at wholesale, stuck Monica Brant's picture on 'em, and made a fortune selling that limited edition item.

If I were Ronnie or Jay I would put my name on whatever shitty or good product that I could.  "Oh a bar made of rat shit and saw dust, but you'll pay me 50k, done and done."

They do, but you need to understand the context to see it. At the time George Foreman won the Heavyweight title (his last one which coincided with the Grill), the "prize money" (or his take in getting the title) was about $10 million for a title defense. Last year, Ronnie Coleman's title defense was worth $150,000. So Ronnie's title is worth 1/66.7 of a Boxing Heavyweight title. Take 1/66.7 of the $40 million a year you say Foreman was earning and you get $600,000. So if Ronnie earns $600,000 a year in endorsements, he's right on track with georgie-poo.  ;D

A 'celebrity endorser' doesn't have to be an athlete.  He/she just needs to be a recognizable face or personality in a given field.

And unfortunately outside of the hardcore bodybuilding circle NO ONE would know who the hell Ronnie Coleman or Jay Cutler are, in turn no one would buy a product that is endorsed by someone the general population has never heard of.

I love my Foreman grill btw. most invaluable food invention of the last little while.

My guess is quite a few. I've met several bodybuilders that have and use those grilling machines.

Athletes don't have to be smart enough to market themselves.

They just have to be smart enough to hire someone smart enough to do it for them ;)

Right.  You sell to your captive audience.

They buy powders and pageant tickets...why not sell them grills and other stuff?

I think he totally killed the image of bodybuilding when he appeared on Leno, I don't think anyone understood the gibberish that was coming out his mouth. Just made bodybuilders look like a bunch of retards on juice.

Yep. George Foreman has a very high "Q" score. I doubt Ronnie coleman has one at all.

Truth being, most bodybuilders don't know how to project  the personality  and warmth that George does.  He is a natural salesman.
Arnold was humorus and bigger than life too. He would have sold a million.
Thats whats missing in this sport. Not trash talking at a press conference.

In fact, Hulk Hogan and Foreman have the same agent, Hulk's agent did not get a response to his query, so george said yes. i say that on Jay Leno last night too. Hogan has a line of vitamins and stuff coming out. he is always on Bubba's radio show www.btls.com

George seems like a real good guy. His second career after he made his come back paid off for him. I remember in 1987 when he announced his come back I laughed at him. Boy I was wrong.

Drew Rosenhaus is hit or miss.  He's good for some folks, but what he did with TO and Javon Walker hurt them.

I recommend BBers get in touch with someone who has marketing/business/competition knowledge, a strong grasp of the BBing industry climate, as well as the graphic and web design skills needed to propel this idea.

I think part of the reason the whole concept was so brilliant is that George is known for his hearty appetite and everyone can relate to George being associated with anything relating to food.   It was a winning combination that may not have worked as well with anyone else.  Additionally, George is embraced as a true athlete in this society while Hogan's ring antics are choreographed and therefore without merit with regards to relating to sporting events.  Professional wrestling is considered entertainment.  Thus George endorsing a healthy way to eat is more credible.

He was on the field at a Bills game a few years ago, I think it was McGahee's first start against the Arizona Cardinals. Anyway, my friend who works at the Livingston County News up there got me a press pass and we walked over to meet him, got our picture with him and he was really nice. He took the picture with us while on his cell phone, a busy man but knows what matters.
