A champion 17-year-old powerlifter has died after a barbell fell on her neck while she was training in India, per multiple local reports.
On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Yashtika Acharya — who was a gold medalist powerlifter in the Junior National Games — was at a gym in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district when the 595-lbs (270 kg) apparatus broke her neck during practice, reported the Times of India, the Hindustan Times and The Indian Express.

Well, at least there is a half a billion more of her.
-
video is less spectacular than I hoped:

-
looks like the left foot got caught up while backing off that stack of rubber tiles.. she basically tripped.
-
Brutal if true
-
Ugly set up with the multiple tiles. To me, it looks like the shitty set up disrupted her walk out, and she was never able to plant that left foot well again. When she sets up foot is already rolling inward a tiny bit, think chubby foot in tight shoe. When she steps back, and is under full load, it continues to roll inward.
RIP.

I'm scared to watch it.

Same here.....no clicky!

Why be fat and strong? Who cares? Especially as a girl.
I’m sorry but I laughed pretty hard at that video. Just instant death from something so stupid. Survival of the fittest and she wasn’t fit so…

This should be the video that accompanies the definition of a clusterfuck.
If you don't want to watch it (it isn't particularly graphic), it shows her standing on a stack of rubber tiles under the bar, adding about 2-3 inches to her height. The rack levels are such that if she wasn't standing on the tiles, she would be doing small lockout to unrack the weight. The tiles are a massive impediment because once she unracks, she has to step back off them. She takes a huge step back to get one foot off the tile, the other foot gets brought back and brushes the back edge and then her foot is sideways and she's falling. All this backwards movement sends her out of the way of the safety bars and both sides of the spotters at the plates. Meanwhile, the spotting team (some at plates and one behind) all miss their job (though they aren't expecting such backward momentum - but they should).
It's a bizarre bizarre thing. Basically a squat after you've completed an small obstacle course section.

"Succinct"
look into it

Quite brutal way to die and traumatic for everyone involved.
It basically looked like an execution had happened.
The guy may blame himself and maybe he should.

I'm going to wait to watch it until appropriately stoned.

Not trying to take anything away from the video, considering someone did die here, but what in God's name was that?!!!
I don't think I've ever seen a bunch of rubber tiles set up in a squat rack in my entire gym life !
If they had simply had her do this lift in a standard power rack with the safety bars in place, even if she fell backward, nothing would have happened. Unreal!
-
That video is ridiculous.

I’m a bit of a dick today. She’s a kid and I shouldn’t have laughed but I’m more laughing at the stupidity of the whole set up. Spotters idiots and the way the bar just snapped her neck and killed her while brutal was comical to me.

Damn bar was set too high for a proper walk out. :( >:(

Bodybuilding is lot safer .Dallas outlived her by 9 years.

You were well within your right to laugh. It's funnier than fuck. ;D
-
Not a good idea to walk backwards off of rubber tiles with a bunch of weight on your neck.

Hard to argue with that. Powerlifting seems to attract very low IQ people. Bodybuilding kills you much slower.

-
Weight was far to Heavy for her - couldn't even stand up properly
let alone rack height to high & the Rubber mat's - Spotters were
as much use as a chocolate fire guard.

Ok I feel better about it now. Thanks Abe.

Lmfao. Glad to help.

Finally watched it.....not as bad as I thought it would be except for the fact that it broke her neck.
What a dumb setup.
RIP

Sure. Also severed spinal cord. Died pretty much instantly.
I don't see why not using safety bars. Just set them to slightly lower than that squatters full dept. Which that lifter should have measured/know before the lift so they just set it. Should be standard practice in powerlifting.

Agreed of course........a totally needless death. :(

Either you haven't watched it or you haven't looked at it close enough.
There were safety bars and not particularly short ones either. They were bypassed by the legendary decision to have her perform a giant backwards step off extra rubber tiles, all in the quest to avoid extra expenditure unracking the weight at a less than optimal height.

something 99% of the guys here will never have to worry about.
none of you have had a bar on your neck in 10+years

And neither have a good portion of IFBB pros!
Gear and hypertrophy is what builds insane legs, not how much you can 1rm in the squat rack ! 🤣

Says the elite MASS MONSTER with 14 inch arms! ;D

Over so quick, horrible.
-
Similar to the other guy that died, spotter behind, she couldn't dump the weight backwards, what is the point of a spotter behind you?
-
The worst video has to be that poor bastard that trained alone in the early hours, failed the bench press and it sat on his neck, died agonisingly slowly trying to move it. Game over and he knew it for a good while!

DB bench only when alone.
