I feel Metallica is great but there are other great bands? what's your opinion?
-
Well done on finally starting a decent thread, pepperoni nips. No, I don't think so. I only liked a few of their earlier albums. My vote goes to Slipknot. Iowa would be my favorite album of theirs. It's absolutely brutal (if true). We need Fortress to weigh in.
-
Yes.
Iron Maiden and Pantera also greats.
Metal is heading more towards Death Core and we are seeping guitar melodies back in style and drumming taking on a new level in being more than just keeping beat. Slaughter to Prevail is my favourite metal right now.

Couldnt carry Maidens instruments...

JFC this "Death Core" sucks balls, so fake in my ears! Though old guys always think only 'their' era was genuine and legit and good :D Perhaps there is good Death Core but I can't make myself search it out, I just put on Burzum Aske if I'm in the mood for something "heavy." Or Death for some quality death metal.
Of course many older fans think Metallica totally went to shit when they cut their hair and stopped drinking and drugging, total sellouts, me included lol. Some think the black album was already a sellout and I used to hear that only the first album was any good with no compromises. I used to think the black album was still good, although if I'm to listen to some Metallica now it's Justice for All and earlier :D 8)

Iowa is a very disturbing album.

I guess this will turn into a Metallica vs Maiden thread, since they are the only serious contenders.
I feel Maiden has been more consistent in the quality of their output (but also a bit more safe). Their albums after 2000 are good if you are a progressive rock fan.
Metallica took more chances with their sound but they rarely paid off. The metal community are not like Madonna fans, they are very conservative, they would never stand for their favourite band reinventing themselves too radically. I personally like Load and Reload while everyone else hates them. S&M 1 is a fantastic record and a very successful experiment. After 2003 they were either shit or embarrassingly mid. St Anger is a pile of shit but this is more due to the production, the lack of polish and the unnecessary length, not the songs. I've read the Lou reed record is shit. The other albums (Death Magnetic etc) are so mid I can hardly remember anything other than a couple of songs. I heard about two minutes from their last record and never played it again. Hetfield, now in his 60s, still goes banging on about his childhood.
-
I personally do not like metallica at all. That is one metal band that I just cannot get into. I play their stuff on guitar a fair bit and unlike many, many bands that have weaseled into me liking them by me playing their music, I absolutely still do not like them. I play master of puppets because it's a downpicking endurance track and that's it. Does nothing for me.
-
They are incredible, still play amazing, and have the longevity factor.
Saw them last year and they were awesome.
But the reality is they haven't produced anything epic since 1988. There some decent stuff, but nothing compared to the first four albums.
Personally, I'll go with Pantera, but completely understand why Metallica is considered the greatest.

Metallica is the best of all metal bands. There is no close 2nd.

They may be "most popular" that doesnt equal "best".
Musicianship, again, Metallica cant carry maidens road cases...
Vox, Drums, Bass, Guitars, (Kirk might be close to Dave Murray (maybe) but thats where musicianship and writing ends.
Just like Rap (many are more popular) but most have zero talent. Metallica havent put out anything good in ages...

Always the excuse of also rans.

Who under the age 50 is listening to Iron Maiden? The band has to be in their 70s by now. I grew up on the west coast and no one was into IM. They were always a weird, cartoonish band to everyone I knew growing up. And as an adult I don’t anyone listening to them. Not trying to hate, but I just never saw or knew anyone into them.

They've done nothing epic since 1988. You can even see it in the crowd reactions at shows.
Plenty of close seconds.
Plus, they changed from metal to hard rock-ish.
Now for popularity and worldwide fame, sure.

Saw both of them at a music festival last year. Metallica put on a great show, although they played the shortest amount just shy of two hours and they were the headliner for their night. Not a maiden fan but they put on a great show, played over two hours and the singer still had his voice. Same with Judas Priest. That dude could still sing. Axl was done for and Brian Johnson was struggling.

I agree they haven't put out anything epic since 1988, but James is one of the best rhythm guitarists ever, IMO.

Old metal= STILL THE BEST.

Who you got number one, Bob Wier, Izzy, Ronnie Wood, Malcom Young? My personal favorite is John Lennon although I don’t think he makes the list.

Hetfield has always been my favorite. All down picking and like 98% accurate.
But it's all subjective, and they are all so f'n good.
-
This style of rock is very Gen X when I think about my interests and the ones that are popular just after my age. I don’t hate the music as I think it’s ok, but it was never the type of album myself or friends would buy.

Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer... these guys were deep into Iron Maiden.

No one has done it for as long as they have....Metallica is one of the best bands ever...

Wow, my thread took off! You mofos are all into metal! cool. Right now i'm listening to Sepultura, before that I was playing Def Leppard. I like to mix it up, something very heavy, some glam metal, etc, I change it up and I have a huge playlist on YouTube

That's a great list of players. James Hetfield, Malcom Young & Bob Weir. All with totally different styles, but all three are amazing at what they do
-
Most have these 4 groups as best of all time and it is really a toss up between them to pick best one.
Just like when people arguing about boxers, soccer players etc etc .You will find few who are standing on the top ,but picking winner is different for every person.
Metallica did not produced anything for many years ,but neither did Whitney Houston and 20+ years after her death she is still considered the best female singer of all times.
-
I used to hear Mustaine kept it real, Metallica were total sellouts, Megadeth kept churning out the same old stuff lol. Mustaine most likely would also have sold out for Metallica money lol.
I'm 47 and I love Maiden, Somewhere in Time is my fave, still put it and other Maiden on in the gym, it's at least not offensive to average gym goers, easy listening not too heavy. Of course AC/DC is the premier old man band, I mean not real metal heads, regular folks :D

He tried to play AOR in 1999 with "Risk"...when it failed he blamed his manager, band members, record company, record shops, Lars Ulrich anyone but himself :D

I love heavy metal and hard rock, but I don't really like Metallica. Iron Maiden is good yes, and so is AC/DC. Listening to Metallica makes my mood worse, Iron Maiden and AC/DC improve my mood. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden probably don't qualify as heavy metal but they're awesome.

I don't believe there is any metallica fan that will deny the greatness of Black Sabbath.
I think they were one of their key sources of inspiriation.

not Rock related but for me the best Band was the Stranglers, JJ Burnel´s bass. My older Brother was a big rock fan & visited many concerts like the Stones ( who i dislike ) but as a young guy i was a Stranglers fan :D still am.

AIC and Soundgarden are amazing. Not heavy metal, but worth mentioning nonetheless. Cornell singing Far Beyond The Wheel live is unreal.
If I may continue going off on this tangent, I listened to some Journey recently, and holy shit! I always thought they were gay one-hit-wonders so I never paid them any attention but that guy's voice is insane.

Listening to And Justice For All.... right now. Fucking masterpiece!

I'm a Metallica fan but before them and still to this day it's Iron Maiden for me and I've seen both plenty of times.
I'm thinking of seeing Maiden again this year if they play in the states but torn that Nicko won't be playing drums.

Mustaine doesn't keep it real, he frequently cites using "management" to make decisions. That includes times when they have tried making more commercially viable albums, the so called reason why Marty Friedmann left (claimed that he put it up to management to who's solo to use in a song and they chose his). He also interchangeably claims he is over his metallica heartache and then burns them the next interview etc etc
Try Kerry King's solo album. It's solid. Saw him do it live last year. Slayer are still my number 1 metal band and generate some of the best atmosphere but I won't call them the greatest because I don't think anybody who actually likes music should use that phrase, it's a vulgar question to pose. Not unlike asking who your favourite child is.

I think the coolest show I ever saw was Slayer in Boston at a very small venue (Axis?). Might have been 150-200 people there. I could literally go to the bar on the side, get a beer and go back and get to the front, standing about 5 feet away.
They still played 3 hours. They didn't give a shit that it was a small crowd. It was insane, got a guitar pick, etc....

If Countdown and Youthanasia are in the sell out category then I like sell out lol. At least I liked them back when they were released, Countdown was a good training album for me.
Unfortunately I have almost nonexistent live music experience. Maiden seemed to play every year in my town, I might have went once, can't remember lol.

Mustaine is batshit crazy or at least was in the past, maybe time has blunted his personality disorder. If you read his biography it's all there... mental illness genetics passed down from his father, abused as a child by Jehovas' wtinesses, add to that copious amounts of drugs and alcohol and a lot of the things that came out of his mouth in the past can be disregarded.
Here is a nice little Mustaine story (there are many): he fired Jimmy DeGrasso because he didn't like how his girlfriend talked to him (Mustaine, the chairman of the board) on the phone.

I didn't move to Boston until 92/93.
I think this was the show - I always confused Avalon with Axis, they were right next to each other:
https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/slayer/1998/avalon-boston-ma-bdfa962.html
They were playing large arenas by that time, I believe, for some reason they played this.
Very fortunate to have gone.
Found a pic of the place - just like I said, bar to the side, etc......look how small - Slayer wasn't even up on the stage, it wasn't there, it was floor level, and they were just standing behind those metal fences they put up in stadiums to tell you where to walk.

I can't speak for prime megadeth but I saw them with kiko about 2 years ago and they were ultra ultra professional but maybe a bit sterile. Kiko made some great behind the scenes youtube vids if you've not seen them.

Slayer, morbid angel, Pantera, and Cannibal Corpse are great metal bands, no?

not classified as heavy metal but this is my thing

Gotta give a nod to Rammstein. Admittedly they straddle the industrial/ heavy metal line but ill put them on first before the others. Good work out jams too

Pantera played there and produced the greatest live breakdown in music history.
It's impossible to pick one, but i think Pantera was a once in a lifetime creation IMO.
So simple, yet complex.
So much energy, with emotion.
Cowboy's from hell and Vulgar display of power are legendary.
Then you have Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, etc.
A lot of good options.
My brother and I have a top 10 list, a list you would choose if you could only listen to 10 albums for the rest of your life.
Pantera's Cowboy's From Hell is on it.
Cemetary Gates is one of the reasons I picked up a guitar.
Yet I've seen Metallica 5 times.
Everything before the Black album is masterful.

I don't find anything depressing at all about Metallica, but can easily say the subject matter around Fade to Black, MoP, Fight Fire with Fire, Creeping Death, Disposable Heroes, Sanitarium, Right the Lightning, One, Harvester of Sorrow, Blackened etc.......is not the most uplifting subject matter lol
Unless you're really into suicide, drug addiction, plague, war, executions, global destruction, etc.

Notice how I did not include songs from that one.
Most of Kill 'em All" is just power metal songs without really heavy subject matter. Ride - AJFA got a bit deeper.

Late to the convo, and I think introducing some true punks - Anthrax:

Opening track to "Sons of Fun" - not a gay movie, a billabong surf vid - early 90's super sick sound track.
