What a life.

He doesn’t get spoken about as a broadcaster enough. He always had some incite that only a guy like him can really give being the best at his sport.
I saw his last fight and he actually won if you really watch it even though there was that sketchy decision. I think he was 47 maybe at that time.
I’ve seen hit pieces on him, but I really like his attitude about life and the experiences he learned from.
-
Will always think of GF when I see a piece of chicken.

RIP Legend Champion

RIP a lot of kids to divide that money up

RIP a lot of kids to divide that money up
Yep - a lot of George Foreman’s running around - 😂
-
His age was always a topic when I was young so I thought he was much older than 76. seemed to live a great life.
I agree Lartinos, as a commentator he had unique insight that was overlooked, even by his colleagues. Looking back I think the goal was to have George be a “Barkley” type as a boxing commentator.
Watching the old George fight the skilled fighters of another era was great too. His fighting style was a throwback and looked out of place, but he ate everyone’s best shot, literally push them aside and fired away.
RIP King.
-
Top 5 heavyweight of all time. Could argue he's top 3. RIP.
-
Shit, this is a bummer. I figured he was going to live into his 90's. I saw an IG video of him less than a year ago working out in the gym, hitting the heavy bag, he seemed as strong as ever. In interviews he still seemed sharp.
He was a true patriot too. Loved God, loved his country. Waived the US flag at the 68 Olympics when other black US athletes were raising their fists for black power.
I enjoyed the early part of his comeback. He was fighting once a month or once every 2 months, fighting journeymen and absolutely knocking them senseless. He always fought on the USA network, their Thursday night fight series.
RIP Big George.
-
Accidently took a nap, and this is some nasty news to wake up to, great athlete, great man, great life. Loved his country and his family, and usually had a kind word for everyone. I've watched him on Twitter have long, meaningful conversations with regular fans out of the blue. He was cut from that cloth that didn't whine or lament the injustices of the World, he just grinned, and got on with it.
Lots of people talk the Ali / Foreman fight or the Frazier bouts, but if you want to see a great one watch this -
.
It's what boxing is, and a good metaphor for who Foreman was. RIP.
-
Fuck, and Robbie still alive...

Absolutely top 3. He had no weak points. Great chin, and massive knock out power. People who mention his lack of stamina often forget that prior to 1982 they did 15 rounds of boxing. In late 1982 that was changed to 12.
A smart businessman outside the ring. Ali will be placed higher on the list than George, but Ali had great difficulty knocking out opponents. He usually had very long fights, and had to win on points.
Both olympic gold medial winners

People thought that was for the boxers health, nothing of the sort, it was purly for TV coverage so they could televise a fight in an hour with ad breaks

The GF grill still sells well. Great champ and seemed like a great guy. RIP

It was technically Tuesday Night Fights and I fucking cried in 1998 when it went off the air. Best weekly boxing show of my lifetime.

Ali and Joe Louis are clearly 1 & 2. After that there is room for debate. I have Larry Holmes, Foreman, Lennox Lewis, Marciano, Jack Johnson, Sonny Liston, Holyfield and Joe Frazier rounding out my top ten but in no particular order.

Lennox Lewis would beat them all.

R.I.P Big George

I enjoyed his fights in his prime, and I recall watching his comeback in the early 90's. Dude could knock you out with his jab. I also admired that in his early days he said his goal was to kill his opponent, but as he grew evolved, that changed. He turned out to be a pretty decent human from what I can tell.
-
Dude could knock you out with his jab.
dude was built to lay waste:

in his early days he said his goal was to kill his opponent, but as he grew evolved, that changed.
it sure did.
in the twilight of his life.. he broadened that goal to include everyone:
"This vaccine is for everyone and I'm proud to receive it in the heart of the city with people who make the city work," Foreman said in a statement. "Just like I knocked out Joe Frazier, now science is knocking out COVID to become the champion."

Lennox Lewis would beat them all.
My top 10 is based on how good/dominant the fighters were in there era. You won't meet a bigger Lennox fan than myself and when he is at his best, he's too big, fast and strong for many of his predecessors on my list. I think Ali, Foreman, Holmes and Liston could beat him just as he could beat them.

Big George demonstrating another in a long line of self less acts. RIP.

People thought that was for the boxers health, nothing of the sort, it was purly for TV coverage so they could televise a fight in an hour with ad breaks
Oh really? That’s a very funny thing to claim, because the PPV broadcasts of the title fights didn’t HAVE ad breaks.
-

it was the repeats of fights
Oh and they didnt have PPV back in 1982/83 when the decision was made to go to 12 rounds from 15, PPV only became a thing in the 90s
Even now they can get an hour slot and show any 12 round fight easily into the TV schedule

I’m not sure where you are getting your information but pay-per-view broadcasts were invented in the 1950s. Every big fight from Ali-Frazier onwards was pay-per-view. Maybe you are misremembering?
In any case, it’s universally agreed upon that the change from 15 to 12 rounds for title fights was done for safety. The WBC announced the change exactly three months after the death of Duk Koo Kim in the fourteenth round. Hope that helps.
-
Both can be right.
The Mancini / Kim fight and ref suicide was the catalyst. But there were other things, like a spate of early fight stoppages after that fight by refs that were scared that a fighter was getting too hurt. The Tv part has merit too. A 15 round fight averages about 70 minutes, a 12 round averages about 45, plus whatever pre and post talk up you want to give it.
The time length may not have merit for PPV showings, but it does for replay and resale to other outlets. Back then you were still eyeing replay on the network "Wide World of Sports" type things, and the occasional live broadcast. Lot easier to work around 45 minutes+, than 70+.
Anyway, just some thoughts.
-
sad to hear this, Only Larry Holmes is left from that era of the great fighters.
-
R.I.P to Big George (and Duk Too Slo). George inspired me a lot as a young amateur. I read his book a few times and had most of his fights on DVD (DVDs?).
-
Funny story: according to Hulk Hogan, he had the opportunity to endorse either a grill or a meatball shaker, and he ended up choosing the latter. The grill then went to George Foreman, who turned it into the massively successful George Foreman Grill. Hogan has mentioned in interviews that he regrets not picking the grill, as it became a huge commercial success, whereas his product, the Hulk Hogan Thunder Mixer, did not achieve the same level of popularity.
-
One of my all time favorite fighters.
RIP

Foreman vs. Lyle was a fucking war !!
One of the best fights ever to watch.

Apparently, his death is being treated as suspicious. Police are currently grilling the suspects.

Seemed like a big nice guy. I figured he was healthy enough to live past 76, although like others have pointed out, I assumed he was older than that.

Ali didnt have much trouble knocking out George in 8 rds. ::)

Ali was the greatest but Foreman's comeback was the most impressive feat I've seen in boxing.
He was mean and nasty the first go around and then during the comeback transformed into a totally likeable figure. He ate monster punches in the 70s and then again in the 90s from Holyfield, Morrison, etc. Surprisingly despite all those heavy hits I didn't see him show signs of CTE in his later years.

His defeat to Ali Completely changed him as a Person & for the Better.

it came in after the Ray Mancini v Kim duk-kuc fight
along with the 3 Knock downs in 1 round.
There's a great video on tubeyou about Duk-Kuc son meeting Mancini
- The man who killed his father.
-
Big George was one of the best and Iron chin and knockout punch. I can understand why Tyson avoided him. RIP George

was he saved ?
Liar Priest chilidogged booty. They should spank black kids harder in schools. They've tried everything else.

Good story but who knows if it is true. Hogan tends to stretch the truth a little.

George Foremans dead...?
Has someone checked the fuse?
-
I remember when Simon Weston tried to bring out his own version of the George Foreman grill. He's so proud of it, he put his face on it.

I used to make chili dogs on the Foreman Grill to “knock out the fat!”
-
I started using a George Foreman grill to try and lose weight.
Didnt work for me...
On a side not I used to love the delicious gravy it made.

Joswift addressed this but PPV wasn’t a true option until the mid 80’s. Another neat thought that will blow your mind, in the 1940s fights weren’t even on TV!

I once saw George in a boxing event in Las Vegas, NV ..... RIP

Thanks bud. Wladimir could certainly make a case for top ten. He has 2nd most title defenses in history I believe behind Joe Louis.
-
Oohhh that's a cruel one.
Haha, yeah it's an old one, but it's brutal. It used to be the height of UK military humor to take the piss out of him. Around 12 years ago a few of us spent the week doing a course at a fire station and Weston came up in the banter. One of the guys mentioned that he's known for being a prick in real life and quick as a flash the instructor said 'yeah, he was a right cunt in A Nightmare on Elm Street!'

That's a sad pic, you can see the desperation in his eyes.
--------------------------
"Why was the Hulk Hogan grill recalled?"
"Unfortunately, the item was recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in 2008. According to the CPSC website, the grill can "ignite and/or flare up" if cooking oils or sprays are applied to any of the cooking plates."
