Bench alone? Sure......just use a power rack, set the safety bars appropriately and you never have this issue.
You can see this dude was thinnking. " I'm going to die if I don't get out from under this"

Exactly, even if benching fairly comfortable weights something could happen. Some do bench in the rack but set up the safety pins way too low so it's useless. I put some type of DIY safety mechanism even on leg presses if there isn't one on the machine. Same with squats. Always, always. I should have set up some type of cushion in front of me deadlifting as well in case I fainted when lifting alone, though sometimes I had a guy ready in front and in the back of me just in case, you could knock out your teeth or worse :D

You can get the same results with dumbbells or even machines.
I dont know why the bench press became such an important exercise. Maybe because of Arnold.

Benching is overrated anyway. Mostly it's ego pressing. Lots of injuries, but luckily great and entertaining accidents like in this thread!
Honestly, deadly bench disasters are the only ones worth watching.
Nothing more boring and pointless than yet another chemical meathead "benchin".

Benching on a slight incline is much more productive & in my opinion better for older lifters like me :D
Not against flat benches but i think they are more an ego thing & for competition types. Real world looks are inclines & dumbbell work..dips
but just my experience

Just perhaps I enjoy flat barbell bench press, find it very effective and most certainly don't do it to impress bimbos.
