Not true. Not sure where you got this, but it is revisionist history. The racists in the Democrat party remained Democrats. The Republican party never changed from being an anti-slavery, pro civil rights party. And if you think about it, why would racists from the Democrat party join an anti-racist party? It makes no sense.
Being the supreme nerd I am, I was in a college bookstore several years back thumbing through some of the history books. It had this precise same lie about the history and supposed transformation of the parties. Just astounding how we allow history to be rewritten and lies taught to our kids.
