Title: When You Are Sick
Post by: Blockingback on April 09, 2025, 05:00:28 PM
do you use meds (advil, tylenol cold and flu, etc etc) when you have a cold, the flu or do you just ride it out and let your immune system deal with it
Ive always rode it out, I just think it strengthens the system. I find where others are sick 5 or 6 days im only sick for 2

lol i load up... i got it all!.... i always figured my body would fight it on its own and meds just mask the symptoms... i wont take an antibiotic unless totally necessary tho.. would rather fight that kind thing on my own.

I take no cold meds. I take no pain meds Tylenol etc… I like to know I’m sick and feel it so I know when it’s gone. Can’t feel good unless you feel bad.

I’ll take NyQuil sometimes at night for sleeping when I’m really sick. Maybe one time a year. I do take aleve or something like that when I have back pain.

Couple tricks that may help reduce viral load in case of an upper respiratory infection:

1.Antiviral mouthwash: Gargle 3 x daily (must contain either chlorhexidine, povidone-iodine, or cetylpyridinium chloride.)

2.Iodine nasal spray/drops (1% povidone-iodine commercial product 2–3 x daily. If 1 %-product not available, must first dilute the more widely available  10% solution and apply 4–5 drops to each nostril every 4 hours.)

Kinda depends for me

Headache I’ll pop a Tylenol
Cold If I don’t have a busy week or lots to do I’ll try to ride it out

Busy week or lots to do I’ll take some cold meds

Actually shit, 2 weeks ago felt a tickle in my throat. Took extra vit c and neo citron before bed

I don't know if fever reducing drugs hurt or help your body to get well sooner, but like a codeine/paracetamol combo pill would be nice to not feel so goddamn miserable, I mean with a really sore throat and fever. That's when you check your medicine cabinet and there's nothing, not even a stinking ibuprofen, at least that's how it's been for me a lot of times :D

Soda pop as mentioned in the soda thread :D

I'm not positive it prevents a sore throat but mom always recommends gargling with hot salt water when coming down with an illness, stupidly I put it off a lot of times :D

I do have some zink tabs currently, as I read this:

"The potential benefits of supplementation with zinc are largely dependent on the individual’s zinc status. Therefore, supplementation with zinc is unlikely to provide a benefit if zinc levels are already adequate and the person is not zinc deficient.[5] One exception to this rule may be respiratory tract infections and the common cold, conditions in which supplementation with zinc has been shown to reduce the duration of illness.[6][7][8] In children, zinc may help prevent pneumonia.[9][10] However, further high-quality studies are needed to bolster the evidence in this field."

I always give my partner grief when she tells me she has a headache or period pain but hasn't bothered to take anything for it. I have an amazing pharmacy in my house and these drugs are a godsend.

If I feel even a hint of a cold coming on, I'll belt-feed myself pseudoephedrine and high-strength co-codamol, along with chlorhexidine for the throat, ice cream for morale, and endless cups of tea served to me while I lay on my deathbed and reiterate for the 100th time that my passing is to remain a secret and I don't want a funeral.

I favour soluble co-codamol - gargle for a sore throat, and it's excellent for breaking a fever

Never met a drug I didn't like/take

Don’t think I’ve ever had the flu. Stomach yes but not the real one. Everyone says it’s horrific so if it’s that bad I’ve never had it.

You've probably had the flu, especially if you went to a packed out school or had kids that do. Your just didn't get the horrific symptoms some do.

If its not  a legit bacterial infection that can be fatal, and there are many, i just use aspirin, dextromethorphan if I have a cough, and the real deal Sudafed for congestion. Being able to sleep is the goal.

Bah. .being sick blows

Thank you sir.  I will cherish them.

But I am still hoping for you to recover.

I have only gotten sick twice in the last decade or so, and that was Covid.

But, if you don't use NSAIDs, tylenol, etc on the reg, it's OK  to use them when you're sick to alleviate symptoms.  I do boatload about 10g per day of vit C when sick too.  Traditional Medicinals Slippery Elm Throat Coat (no Goodrum) tea is also incredibly helpful.

Get better man.

We have a nice Rx cough syrup here with a tiny, tiny amount of morphine that's seems to be the only one that actually "works." If it's because the morphine treats the sore throat (and through cough suppression) or just because opiates make suffering more tolerable perhaps doesn't matter. Same with the codeine in co-codamol. And yes, perphaps it could be called a "reccy" effects instead of strictly therapeutic, but who cares. Actually, many do, taking drugs for "fun" is a no no, some kind of moral issue. And as MajorDomo said, sleep is important and opiates help sleep or make sleeplessness much more tolerable :D

Nice - we used to be able to buy codeine linctus OTC in the UK but they cracked down on it...  :(
