Title: European gyms question
Post by: 1Patrick on April 13, 2025, 03:47:29 PM
When I’ve went to Czech Republic I had to have second clean pair  of sneakers to step onto the gym floor.
I  do understand in the winter time or rainy day. Is it in your gym as well or someone saw that in the US?

When I was in Walmart in Toronto it felt more like Candia . Had to take a long shower to get rid of that curry smell on my clothes.

Yes in every gym in Sweden. I'm an asshole and walk in without changing anyway. Sign says there's a 50 buck fine for doing so. I take the chance of being told off and embarrassed while walking in during staffed hours, but hasn't happened yet that I recall.

No one walks into private houses or apartments with shoes on from the outside period, unlike in the US.

In Italy I have been to a few gyms where you need to have a second clean pair of trainers for in the gym. You must bring a clean towel to put on the equipment also.
In Spain you have to bring a towel to put on all equipment.
In the UK you dont have to bring a towel or change shoes in the gym.

A second (clean) pair of shoes and a towel is the standard in Europe.

That's not going to happen, Ireland still deserves to be a united and sovereign island even if our common enemy is not each other at the moment.

In Germany you need a second pair of shoes + a small towel + you can`t do curls in the squat rack.

Culturally wise, europeans are very different depending on the country. And so is gym culture.

Here in Sweden we leave the shoes at the entrance and then enter the gym with our gymshoes.

I usually forget my gymshoes so i just train in my socks lol

I completely understand .I do take my shoes off when I walk into my house .Floor is clean and I want to keep it that way.
Totally forgot someone has mention clean towel.,that I had to have as well which is fine.I would rather have clean dry towel than those wet wipes .Some people I’ve see spend more time moping machine with those wipes then actual lifting time.

That rule would  be very difficult to follow  for average American broccoli haircut youth .

Yep. My gym has a sign at the entrance reminding members they need to have another pair of shoes to train in that are dedicated indoor sports shoes and haven't been worn outside.

About 70% of the people take notice of this. I do because I'm not an asshole.

There's also a sign (there was - it's been removed recently) that says "For the comfort and consideration of ALL gym members, we request that all members speak in German." There is a large expat Russian population where I live - they tend to take over a bit and will usually speak Russian to each other. I guess it was for their benefit.

(I've seen people curling in the squat racks here though)

Yes, it is par for course mostly.  I have posted about this before.  Also, in many Asian countries, you can't even wear your own work out clothes.  They have standard issue clothes for you to wear when you train.  Right down to the socks.

Regarding the gym towels many mentioned, never saw that here in Sweden, the paper rolls and and antiseptic sprays are everywhere, I think that's a more hygienic solution, but people are slacking on using them. During covid the demands were insane though :D

I actually worked in a gym where guys were not allowed to wear muscle t-shirts but women could walk around half naked.
The Gym kept t-shirts for anyone breaking this rule.
Trainers like myself had to wear long sleeves to cover tattoos but customers could show tattoos  ???

I see that here too especially in physiotherapy places
Which I understand.
Gyms do it in most cases too but you've got to use a towel as well.
The most important thing though is soft toilet paper to wipe my ass

In my old gym, once a place for olympic weightlifters and powerlifters, there were coming in more and more of those kazakhs and other russian tribes. Telling everybody they are germans, but looking more like half chinese. They came because it runs like a club with a moderate fee, chewing sunflower seeds and loud bla-bla. I quit this place and went to the best gym in town with a fee thats five times higher, to avoid those people. I did not regret it, the money is well spent.
No need for signs here, people know how to behave and until today no one was curling in the squat rack.

No one at real men's gyms like genesis and muscleworks gives a fuck.
You train and don't talk shit.
