I tried researching it, but I can't figure out which is actually the best and most secure. I was thinking about Linux, but it appears to be a massive rabbithole.
-
I use Linux exclusively.
It's excellent.
If you want a Linux version that mimics Windows try Linux Mint.
You can buy a computer that is on Windows and then blow out Windows and install Mint.
If you need it for work then get whatever they use.

I read that keeping linux secure takes advanced knowledge and constant attention, while MacOs and Windows does most of that automatically. True or false?
-
Never buy a Mac. Overpriced crap, super arrogant company too. Apple decides what's best for you. Everything goes only throught their app store. Apple is a brand for retards with a slave mentality.
Spend as little money as possible. All computers are throwaway products. No matter if it's a desktop, laptop or smartphone. And only buy with a huge discount. Don't buy "refurbished", theyx all suck.
Better to buy a new one from the 2024 or 2023 model year.
-
I actually started test driving Debian, and for my use cases it's very easy to use, I notice almost no difference with windows. But I got worried about security, as I read that it assumes you know what you are doing in terms of security, and for example does not come with firewalls or antivirus if I understand correctly.

As ex computer geek...I would disagree with the refurb part. Super inexpensive and you don't have to deal with the bloatware bullshit that comes with new computers. I do agree with spend as little as possible and that they are all throw away.
For example...
Dell 7050 Mini Tower Desktop
Intel i7-7700
4.20GHz Processor
32GB DDR4 Ram
New 1TB NVMe SSD + 2TB HDD
Wi-Fi
BT Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
Win 11 Pro (Renewed)
$270
Thats more than enough for the average person. Would it support a Getbigger requirement of 6 screens to watch the Olympia? Probably not. I only buy the refurb stuff for my office. I never spend more then $150 on them either.
I built mine and thats the way I go for home.

This is all great advice. Especially the bold part.

You ever run solidworks on one of those $150 laptops? :D

I bet you are right. Having said that, have you noticed that a lot of computer scientists use macs when doing public appearances? Is it a sponsorship or a legit choice? Obviously we can't really know that. But I have wondered. Same for other public figures, usually sporting macs, iphones, iwatches. For technical reasons, identity management, or endorsement deals? We will never know.

Buy a used one for 20 Dollars and use a pre-activated version of Win7.
-

ZX81 (Sinclair Basic Interpreter),
VIC-20 (Commodore Kernal and Basic 2.0),
Amstrad (AMDOS)
or
Amiga (AmigaOS).

Besides that, no. There's no reason anyone who dons a thong for battle and going to war with iron would want to CAD software.

False.

I've bought refurbs for years with excellent results.
Debian is just a version of Linux. What Linux are you using.
Anti-virus not necessary with Linux but you can use ClamTK if you want.
It does have a firewall. You just turn it on.

I played around with Linux a few decades ago - lol! It's cute and all, but what kind of productivity software can you run on it? 3D work, photo editing, audio editing, video editing, games, the list goes on. It just cannot compete with Windows. If all you care about is browsing web site and basic photo editing with Gimp, then yes Linux will be sufficient.

Pre-activated as in hacked? Hacked Windows and Warez is fine for your play computers. If you have confidential info or use it for crypto related stuff then it is probably better to get a vanilla PC / Laptop with a legitimate copy of Windows and antivirus software. And that vanilla PC should only be used for banking / crypto related activities and shutdown when done.

Mint is awesome! My favorite program is Hypnotix, a free world TV app. I'm obsessed with RTV Noord from the Netherlands. No clue what they're saying but a cool channel (so are the other RTV channels). I want to visit the Netherlands so bad.
-
Taking into account everything you've said, I'd probably just do a hybrid linux / windows and see where you end up.
Not a hard to thing to have both and then the limitations you'll have in linux will be catered to.
-
Mac.
No one I know has anything but Apple products at home although many do use Windows for work.
Don’t even know what Linux is.

I might know a 'lawyer' that could stop that....he has SIX screens and a DESKTOP computer. He was studied by NASA and is a genius, unlike you.

Are you saying Libs choose Mac just for being Libby? Vegans LBTQ choose Mac or?
Hardcore right picks Linux right? The Finnish Great OS

It's all very confusing really. The current sentiments have shifted to MacOs for the right, Linux for trannies

Ill stick with these then
ZX81 (Sinclair Basic Interpreter),
VIC-20 (Commodore Kernal and Basic 2.0),
Amstrad (AMDOS)
or
Amiga (AmigaOS).

When I hear anyone is using anything other than Apple I assume it’s because they’re poor.
-

ZX81 (Sinclair Basic Interpreter)
The Sinclair BASIC interpreter was the built-in software environment used on Sinclair’s home computers (ZX80, ZX81, ZX Spectrum, and later models like the QL).
VIC-20 (Commodore Kernal and Basic 2.0)
On Commodore 8-bit computers (PET, VIC-20, C64, etc.),
two main pieces of firmware lived in ROM: the KERNAL and Commodore BASIC.
Amstrad (AMDOS)
AMDOS stood for Amstrad Disk Operating System.
It was the disk extension layer for the Amstrad CPC (and later PCW) computers.
It sat on top of CP/M or the CPC’s built-in firmware to provide disk file handling.
Amiga (AmigaOS).
AmigaOS is the native operating system for Commodore’s Amiga line of computers (first released in 1985 with the Amiga 1000).
It was one of the most advanced home computer operating systems of its time.

Why it was special
In the mid-1980s, PCs were running MS-DOS (text-only, single-tasking),
and Macs had a GUI but no pre-emptive multitasking.
The Amiga gave you color graphics, sound, multitasking, and a GUI all at once — way ahead of its era.
That’s why it became legendary for games, graphics, video production, and music.
Why not to use Apple / Mac / Iphone
It's only for fags

Linux used to be for powerusers only. It has become more accessible by the year, just a few google searches and you can sort out the most common linux problems, no problem. I would not recommend it for gaming though. Since Linux is free and open source there are zero costs and telemetry is non existent so your computer/internet habits stay with you and not fed into a system to be fed into some fuck manager's "analytics". This will be a concern for very few people though.
Windows is still the station wagon that Neal Stephenson said it was in the early 1990s. Accessible, best for gaming, all hardware works out of the box, but hard to customise and nowadays sucks up your data and reports everything to Microsoft like it's noone's business.
Mac is the king of accessibility/functionality, it's like a Ferrari, but a closed one. Hard to modify since you are restricted in the hardware you can use. And expensive. Apple's walled garden is what it always. They suck up your data too but they claim to be privacy friendly in a way that others are not. Support is top of the line, too.

This is why I started looking into Linux, but then I started worrying that I chose the wrong distribution (debian) in terms if security. Some said I should have taken fedora because of SELinux.

ChatGPT might be your friend here. I don't much about the differences between distributions. The Linux kernel remains the same. I know that the main distros take a middle ground between usability and security and that's a good thing if you are new to Linux.
I would say best write down your security requirements and pass them to ChatGPT, it's really good at these things. But in any case you will be more secure with Linux than Windows, if that's what you were using before. Much smaller attack surface, far fewer viruses, etc.
It doesn't void the requirement for basic sec ops from your part, so be careful what files you download and be on the lookout for spear phising, just like you would with any other system - Linux can still be ratted, i.e hacked via a remote access trojan

I found some online resources on "security hardening" measures of debian. I think I will rather do that instead of start from scratch with another version. And you're right the most important element is how to use it. Never used Mac, it seems really high quality and fancy. But really expensive hardware.

Yes, hacked - not every hacker is keen on back door-ing. Realistically, all machines with their systems have back doors - warez or not.
Been using my DJ717 setup since years but I do not keep more than 1K on the bank account though.
If you're, understandably, paranoid then maybe use Linux. If it has to be a Mac then buy a used one.
The problem with security is that one has to be really well informed to gauge possible risks.

I’m really curious as to the situation in Moldova. Do you not have Amazon? Can you not use Zelle or Venmo or other cash apps? How will you get paid by your clients, Western Union?

Macs are cooler for da libs and more trendy true, but user experience just for regular home stuff is pretty good. Just prettier and softer experience (nh). Big drawback is documents in Word and spreadsheets. And in my experience windows seems to require more update type maintenance.

For an average computer user, refurb is just fine. Buying new is a waste with all bloatware.

It's also a status symbol for some. Everbody knows apple products are expensive (and hugely overpriced if you look at the discounts available online). So there is a group of consumers who think they can show off that they are able to buy apple crap.

Agreed. I personally can do a lot more with Windows because of all the software that works on it.
