He was once called “Dr. Doom and Gloom” on Wall Street. Not everything has changed for Kent Smetters, who runs the Penn Wharton Budget Model. His economic predictions remain gloomy, but imminent doom isn’t around the corner.
In his view, doom will land on America’s doorstep between 2045 and 2050, the breaking point for the U.S. economy. That’s the moment when, as Smetters sees it, the cost of interest payments on the national debt would become so large for the federal government that even a broad-based tax increase wouldn’t cut it anymore.
At that point, Smetters says, the U.S. government would enter either an explicit or implicit default, both with calamitous consequences. An explicit default renders the U.S. a global deadbeat. An implicit default theoretically occurs through debt monetization — which jacks up inflation — or by trimming Social Security and Medicare payments.
“This is when panic starts happening. This is the loss of faith in government,” Smetters told me. “That's what's doomed other societies as well. Before us, you can go all the way back to Rome, to France, Spain, the U.K., and Germany. Almost every empire has been taken down by debt.”
Smetters is part of a familiar group of fiscal hawks cycling in and out of Washington, which has all but surrendered to a national debt that swells in size with every passing day. The gross U.S. federal debt surpassed $38 trillion in October, per data from the Treasury Department. Put another way, total U.S. debt has grown by $66,225 each second so far in 2025, according to the Joint Economic Committee in Congress.
Those are staggering figures. But the growing U.S. debt isn’t likely to be tamed anytime soon. President Donald Trump and a GOP-led Congress brushed aside concerns about fiscal discipline when they muscled through the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” with a $3.4 trillion price tag this summer.
‘Neither party has any credibility’
Tackling the debt has periodically cropped up as a priority in Congress. The most well-known effort in recent times was the bipartisan Simpson-Bowles Commission in 2011. Lawmakers in both chambers convened to strike an austerity deal the country could live with. It didn’t take long for those belt-tightening efforts to collapse, triggering automatic cuts in the ensuing years. A striking resignation has sunk in even among hardened spending-battle veterans.
“Frankly neither party has any credibility on that issue anymore,” Virginia Democratic Sen. Mark Warner, who sat on the Simpson-Bowles panel, told me a couple years ago. The U.S. debt at the time registered $32 trillion, a ballooning amount he believed was going to “come back and bite us.”

Elon thought he was helping reduce government waste, and instead they turned it into a PR stunt that trashed Dogecoin’s name — which I actually care about since I still have some Dogecoins from 2021.
So when people now blame Democrats for the shutdown, it’s the same hypocrisy all over again. Which job loses is Coach referring to? Many of them were instigated by Trump's agenda. The job losses since October 2025 are primarily a result of an ongoing government shutdown and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, with around 670,000 to 750,000 employees furloughed and some tens of thousands facing layoffs due to DOGE. Additionally, federal job losses are part of a broader trend of over one million total layoffs in the US in 2025, driven by a mix of cost-cutting, AI, and the DOGE impact. U.S. employers announced 153,074 job cuts in October, which was up 175% from the 55,597 cuts announced in October 2024. These cuts have little to do with the government shutdown.
Neither the Covid lockdowns nor the 'Capitol attack' have anything to do with the current government shutdown as Coach implies it does.
The lockdowns during COVID were very real, although in retrospect they were something of a knee jerk reaction as a result of fear of the COVID pandemic. They were not politically motivated by the left.
Regardless of what anyone, including Coach calls the January 6th events at the Capital, they were a complete fiasco. Trump attempted using an army of his MAGA followers to storm the Capitol to try and overturn the 2020 election results. Despite the January 6, 2021, break-in and damage to the Capital, which Trump instigated and watched but chose not to take any action to stop, his plan failed greatly. Pence refused to fall in line, despite the angry crowd calling for him to be hanged. After nearly nine hours the Capital was cleared of the intruders the Senate reconvened. Congress officially proclaimed Joe Biden the victor when it certified the Electoral College results in a joint session on January 7, 2021, at approximately 3:45 a.m.
If the shutdown was the left's M.O as Coach said, why was it shut down by the GOP? Of course, the current shutdown was likely planned. Would Coach have preferred it to not have been planned as in the 35-day shutdown in 2018 when Paul Ryan was House Speaker and Trump was in office? This time, it was Speaker Johnson who sent the House Reps home on September 29, 2025, and he has yet to reconvene. This would appear to be his modus operandi since he called an early start to the "House August recess" July 22, 2025, a move many believe was to avoid a vote on releasing the Epstein files. This recess lasted for six weeks.

I'm no expert on all cryptocurrencies, but Bitcoin specifically has a hard cap of 21 million coins. That should shield it from inflation. However, it doesn't protect against devaluation. A government could still outlaw it outright.

Potential but not recognized. I am leery of the ability of any government to come along and criminalize crypto in an effort to control it. Just seems fairly sketchy to have a high percentage of your lifes value in crypto. What stops any government from coming in and taking control of crypto? Crypto is volatile, sure. But unlike the dollar, which has been bleeding value for decades under inflation and fiat erosion, digital assets still have genuine upside potential. They can multiply in value over time, while the dollar just keeps sliding.
I’m not blindly loyal to anyone either and as a disclaimer, I know next to nothing about crypto. But aside from crypto I pay attention to policy and most strategies VERY closely. For the most part you and I use different sources which is why it was pretty useless to even counter in your post from a few days ago (aside the fact I was out of town and couldn’t respond).
Bottom line, he’s been doing everything we voted for and most of it was accomplished in this first year. He’s even he won the majority of his court cases that were challenged in the lower courts that were appealed either to the appellate and/or SCOTUS. I don’t agree with his suggestion of a 50 year mortgage, as an example. It’s a ridiculous proposal. As far as the shutdown, it proved who was at fault with this. Not Elon or even more ridiculous, “Epstein” files conspiracy. I’ll respond later to your other post but what you failed to show is the 2.4 million jobs added in the private sectors as well as the almost $20 trillion (with a T) in US investment bringing manufacturing back to the US. NVIDIA just hit $5 trillion in valuation.
If he loses the SCOTUS decision on the tariffs it’s because his attorneys basically didn’t argue the case properly. I try to listen to most of the important arguments live so I can understand why sometimes things go the way they go.

Yes Illuminati, you are wrong about there being a resent vote on releasing the Epstein files, which Democrats voted down.
The House vote to release the Epstein files has not been taken yet. According to Mike Johnson, the vote will be taken next week. The required number of lawmakers have signed the discharge petition. This is despite the fact that Trump tried unsuccessfully to get Lauren Boebert, a Republican representative from Colorado, and Nancy Mace, from South Carolina, to remove their names from a discharge petition. If everyone who signed the petition supports it on the House floor, it will pass.
After the bill passes in the House, it goes to the Senate for a vote. Republicans hold a 53–47 majority it takes 60 votes to move the bill to final passage. So, if it does not pass in the Senate, it won't be because Democrats blocked it.
Should the bill pass the Senate, the next step is for Trump to sign off on it. In this case, he is expected to veto the bill. If he does this, the veto can be overridden with a two-thirds vote in both chambers.
Lastly, if the bill gets through, it may take up to 30 days before the files are released.
The work of the House's Oversight Committee has resulted in thousands of pages of documents being released, including more than 20,000 on Wednesday. It is from these documents that the Epstein related email communications have been released. The Oversight Committee has a Republican majority.
Logically, no matter what happens here on out, it will not be Democrats who block the release of the Epstein files.

Thanks for asking my opinion. I do not believe our intuition, no matter how good it is, is a reliable basis for our opinions. Not being an expert, since it is not possible for me to be everywhere all the time and know everyone personally, some of what I base my opinion on is what I read in the media, both left leaning and right leaning.

He claimed he would end the Ukraine war in a single day with one phone call. Yet the war continues, and the U.S. is still supplying weapons to Ukraine. Remember the Tomahawk missile initiative?
He also said there would be no more wars. But the U.S. has already struck Iran and is now on the brink of escalating against Venezuela. We’ve seen this playbook before—when Iraq was invaded under the false pretext of WMDs. The current “drug trafficking” justification is just as flimsy. Most of the drug flow originates from Colombia. What the U.S. really wants is Venezuela’s resources. Trump is simply continuing the agenda of previous administrations.
He is also extremely pro-Israel. That wasn’t what I voted for, and increased alignment with Israel is the last thing America needs. It’s been a major factor holding the U.S. back for decades.
Meanwhile, the U.S. debt keeps climbing. The “Big Beautiful Bill” added trillions in spending. The DOGE department is gone. There’s no sign of serious fiscal restraint.
So no—I’m not impressed with Trump so far. What exactly has he accomplished?
