Anyone check this out tonight? Franco Columbo and Lou Ferrigno are competing. The Rules seem alot stricter back then compared to now
-
i think this is the one where franco breaks his leg.
-
NOT for the squeamish!

Franco did not break his leg, although is does look that way. His knee was completely dislocated, tearing every ligament and all the cartilages in his knee, plus ripping his hamstring and calf muscles!
The fact that he even walked again was a profile in determination.
In Franco's own words

I'm just watching the squating event right now with the girls inside the cages as the weights. Its wierd seeing some of these guys struggle with 476lbs and they are not even going all the way down

My friend Jack is still to this day the youngest guy ever to compete in the WSM. I think it was in 1979 and he was 19.

Onlyme,
Did you know strongman, Tom Magee?
I saw him in person at a gym in NYC awhile back. The guy was like 6'6" 270 ,wide as a barn door with a small waist and no bodyfat. At the time I was about 220 at 6'3" and felt tiny next to him.

No but I have heard of him. I wrote them (the company who produced the WSM) back in 1984 or 85' and tried to get on but they said they had a roster already set for that year. I didn't try again. I can't remember what the company name was. I sent them some pics and lifts I did and apparently was good enough. At that time the only two wins I had was the Nationals and the American Cup. I wasn't a big name or anything like that. They liked the powerlifter guys better and football players. They did it at Universal Studios most of the time I think back then.

FWIW, Tom and I are pretty good friends. FWIW.

Yes I think that was it Far West something right
-
What were the results? How did Ferrigno do- did he scream 'Arnold,Arnold' on every rep?
-
Did anyone record it?
and feel like posting the vid to England??? ;D
-
it's a must see!

Sad to say that today's top bbers would fare even worse than Lou and Franco in strongman comps. Even though the bbing "media" touts them as "athletes", they obviously are not. This is why one doesn't even hear the name Ronnie Coleman around a wsm comp.

It's probably best that you didn't participate. You would have been crushed ;D

i some cases but i think ronnie, branch and johny jackson wud do pretty well
-
to some degree... but I don't see Ronnie running with with his lunchpail in his hands let alone running with a 400lbs rock in his hands
-
ronnie is not tall enough. he mite just be ok. his chest is so big as are his arms they would be a disadvantage hard to grab stones etc. of course he is insanely strong.

No way, they're way too short

Utter speculation with little basis in fact. Ron and some others are much stronger. In his case was also previously an athlete, unlike Lou or Columbu. Would probably do better while generating huge publicity for him and for BB, given time to prepare for it.

Not. In some events the shorter guys have an advantage as seen with Marius, who isn't much taller than Ron. If Ron lost some weight for it and practiced, those two would be a great matchup.

Have to luv the "sincere" sarcasm, on onlyme's dick. hahahahahahhahahhah

hahaha Yeah it is sorta funny when he is being nice.... :D...Like in the thread about him asking Bast for cardio advice...nothing wrong with that of coarse, but sarcasm said something to the effect of "it is obvious from your pics that you know what you are doing"...I was like WTF? somebody hacked sarcasm's account. ;D

Events that favor short guys are few and far between, and Mariusz is 6'1", I'd hardly call that short.
-
That was a real good article about Franco. Keep stuff like that coming.

Odinn, do you think Isaac Nesser would be successful in a strongman competition? ???
-
was the company TWI Keith?
Yes thats it Transworld International
-
i dont think that you should class strength on how quickly you can run with a weight etc. Glenn Ross obviously cant do alot of cardio because of his size, but even Mariusz is left behind when you compare their raw power lifts. Glenn is untouchalbe for stationary lifts

Franco was the amateur lightweight Sardinian boxing champion. He was a very good athlete.

Heheheh Sardinian amateur lightweight boxing champ.. ;) You have no idea whether he was a very good athlete actually. Everyone else in WSM understood not to try to run with a refrigerator.

Franco was a great athlete. In his prime he would have manhandled you ;D

He was the last cut for the Italian Olympic boxing team. He was an athlete.

Yeah, Franco boxed and Lou dominated the Superstars competition one year, and did well another year, against athletes from real sports. He would lose about 20 lbs and train a little different for a while, but he was athletic. Even though he never played organized football, he got a tryout for the CFL, because he was such a great combination of speed and strength, with above average agility.
Of course, back then bodybuilders were even less developed, and still needed to drop some weight to be more athletic. If Ronnie or some of the others trained for WSM competition, they might do very well.

I happen to be the 1150 Walnut avenue middle light heavy boxing champ from 1993.
