One thing that often ruins thriller and horror movies for me is how unbelievably dumb the victims are written. In a lot of home-invasion or slasher films, the entire plot only works because the characters make the worst decisions imaginable.
Movies like The Strangers or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre rely heavily on characters being confused, passive, or slow to recognize the threat.
Personally, I think it would be far more interesting to see more films take the opposite approach:
• The victims immediately recognize something is wrong
• They assume the worst early on
• They start preparing, setting traps, arming themselves, and going on the offensive
• The movie turns into a cat-and-mouse or revenge scenario
That kind of dynamic is much more satisfying to watch because the tension comes from strategy and survival, not from characters making frustrating decisions.
A few movies that partially move in this direction are:
• You're Next – A home invasion where one of the “victims” turns out to be very capable and starts countering the attackers.
• Ready or Not – The protagonist adapts quickly and starts fighting back.
• The Hunt (2020) – One character figures out what’s happening almost immediately and becomes extremely dangerous to the hunters.
I’d like to see more thrillers where the targets are not helpless, but intelligent and proactive.
Are there other movies where the supposed victims quickly recognize the danger and turn the tables on the attackers?

Another movie that almost went in this direction is No Country for Old Men (2007).
The character Llewelyn Moss (played by Josh Brolin) is actually written as far more competent than the typical thriller victim. He quickly realizes the danger he’s in after taking the money, prepares for pursuit, arms himself, and spends most of the movie staying one step ahead.
Because of that, it feels like the story is building toward a direct strategic confrontation between Moss and Anton Chigurh.
Instead, Moss is abruptly killed off-screen at the motel before that showdown ever happens.
I understand that the movie is intentionally subverting the traditional “hero vs villain” structure, but it also feels like a missed opportunity. The film spends so much time establishing Moss as a capable survivor that it almost seems set up for exactly the kind of cat-and-mouse battle that many thrillers avoid.
It would have been interesting to see how that confrontation actually played out.

100% this. In Strangers Episode 1 (2024), the victim has a gun to the head of one of the masked females. He keeps yapping away. Just shoot out both knee caps and then go deal with the other guys. Well, he doesn't and she stabs him while he is distracted. What a moron.

Those movies are old. Lots of lost opportunities here. You'd think screenwriters would come up with a few decent revenge scenarios. Nothing irritates me more than these dumb cannon fodder victims in the horror genre. If you know they are trying to kill you it is time to go medieval.

He was a bad ass fella, we were at a bar and a guy comes up to him and says so and so is looking for you, he replied tell him I’m looking for him and so we did. I’m basically a horror only movie guy and I don’t get how you don’t just beat ass? Strangers perfect example a boy and two girls please I’m beating all 3 of you to death so fast. As soon as you start hunting me now your fucked cause I’m hunting you. If it’s not Jason who you can’t beat but a human then I’m fucking shit up every time. If I’m a pussy I’m sitting in the corner of a room with the gym like In The first strangers, they weren’t obviously up to go hunting so just sit in the corner with th gun you found and wait them out. Game over your dead.
