If you have access to the SEC and Big 10 networks watch women's gymnastics multiple times a week. You can thank me now or later.

Isn't this a freak sport where if you want to make champions you basically have to abuse the little kids? Do most of them even properly enter puberty during their career? Impressive tricks, wrecked bodies. Or maybe I have it wrong?

Their bone growth is stunted due to the high tension of their muscles.
This was discussed by a Russian doctor who was the "founder" of the "School Of Height".

Yeah though I think it would mostly have to do with severe overtraining and calorie restriction/malnutrition.

Okay, so I had to ask AI. As I suspected, it used to be that gymnasts didn't even enter puberty during their careers but it still seems somewhat abusive if maturation is delayed by 2 years. What you guys think? Worse than bhanks coaching?

Yes, top gymnasts do enter puberty during their careers, though it often occurs significantly later than it does for the average population.

While elite gymnastics has historically been dominated by pre-pubescent-looking teens, modern shifts in the sport have extended athlete careers well into their twenties, meaning nearly all top-level gymnasts now navigate puberty while actively competing.

Delayed Maturation and "Late Blooming"

Medical studies and sports literature highlight distinct trends regarding how elite gymnasts experience puberty:

Delayed Timing: High-intensity training (often exceeding 20–30 hours per week) combined with low body fat can delay the onset of puberty by an average of one to two years compared to non-athletes.

Menarche Delay: Top female gymnasts frequently experience menarche (their first period) much later than their peers, often not until age 15 or older.

Skeletal Age: A gymnast’s "bone age" often lags behind their chronological age, meaning their skeletal framework matures at a slower pace.

Catch-up Growth: Despite the delays, medical consensus from bodies like the International Gymnastics Federation shows that training does not permanently stop growth; gymnasts eventually hit their full, genetically predetermined adult height

Maybe :D

Though I doubt they need them. I'd think they want them petite yet strong, sort of a catch 22. I'm sure if there was no testing they'd give them Anavar or other anabolics in very low doses, not for bulk obviously; that would be controlled by the diet anyway. Petite, no bodyfat, yet strong.

I would not underestimate muscular tightness - I had chronically tight thoracic muscles during puberty and it did some damage to my ribs / mid-back.

I'm sure the gymnasts could incur damage that hurt growth. Though AI says the gymnasts reach predicted adult height. The child weightlifting/stunted growth hypothesis of course has been disproven, though it never made logical sense to me even as a child. I always thought of how much load all healthy kids placed on bones just by jumping around. Now extreme overtraining coupled with malnutrition and delayed puberty I guess could do a number on bone calcification or whatever, but I don't know if that has been looked at. Nowadays they probably make sure the girls get enough calcium and other micronutrients.

I know the U.S. historically imported eastern European slave driver coaches but luckily today child protection is better in the west at least. But it used to be that countries like Sweden didn't have a chance in hell of medaling in gymnastics as it required some child abuse.

I had a lifting phase at 9 years old and if I'd advice another kid or myself at that age I would avoid overhead lifts, wouldn't worry as much about lower back. I remember a lot of shoulder joint pain :D

Girls of all physical types practice gymnastics. Only the genetically elite (short, light weight, flexible, resilient to injury) make it to college and only the super elite make it to the Olympics just like every other sport.

Yup and as it's said the tragedy is in countries like China with big government programs only a tiny handful make it, there's a mountain of wrecked bodies and in fact whole families left behind with nothing to show for it. Ruthless and cynical exploitation. Little children call home and beg their families so they can come back home from the concentration camp and momma says stfu kid and do the work! :D

It's worse for weightlifters. Practically all the Soviet and Bulgarian weightlifters from the Cold War days are crippled alcoholics or dead.

Sadly, Iowa State University ended it's woman's gymnastics program this year. They are in the Big 12, but it's still a real shame
