Thanks bro, i'm not trying to cry over spilt milk or anything but even strangers seated around my parents were talking about how i looked like one of the best there.  Also this was a level 1 show and our division consisted of 18 guys! did'nt even really fit on stage! Plus the guys who took first and second in our divisions took also took first and second in the masters division and i heard that the one guy won so much in the states that he had to come to canada and compete here, whatever!  ::)

When front latspreading, flair the lats as much as possible. I squeeze traps together, hook the hands to the sides, and focus on bringing all that muscle forward so it shows from the front. Makes you look wider. Also, you can still look great by spreading your back out in a back doublebi. See how it looks compared to it all squeezed together.

Looks like you should have placed but I had the same problem at my first show, my posing sucked even though I had practiced quite a bit.  Before my second show I enlisted the help of someone who knew posing and it really helped.  That posing is a lot harder to get right than some may think.  Better luck next time...

You look good man.  Don't let this negate that fact that you prepared for and did a show.  That's a lot more than most bodybuiding enthusiasts will ever do.

Obviously, we can't tell squat from these pics, but as has been mentioned by others, your posing sucks (except for your side chest).  I think this cost you big time.  The guy who took first seems to have a done a good job of hiting his shots, and it looks like his legs were tighter than yours.

The guy in the middle SHOULD have won.  His conditioning was way better.  Working out is easier and more fun than dieting.  That's why there are so many big dudes and so few washboard abs in your typical gym.

He should have CLEARLY won.

Also, in that first pic with the rear double bi, he obviously hasn't flared his lats out yet.  In the next pic, his lats at least are flared.  You have way more thickness, but he still has the better v-taper in the back shot (minus the double bi pic obviously).  And it is due to his conditioning. 

Nothing about that guy is bigger.  His shape is not genetically better. 

But he dieted harder.

If you would have dieted 4 more weeks, you would have smoked him.  And everyone in the class. 

But you didn't........so you didn't.

Alright I am going to try to help your posing by critiqing the major flaws I see....

1.  In your front double bi pose - Get your fricken he head up and hold your chest HIGH.  Why are you standing behind the guy that beat you??  Look at the two others and how they are holding their heads high and, more importnantly, their CHESTS!!  Quit looking down at the judges, the girls, or whoever the hell you were looking at in the crowd.  In posing, if your head drops, so will your shoulders and chest.
Remember Arnold in Pumping Iron where he was showing that dude how to pose and he said "A little guy will "hide" like this (as he hunched over), while a bigger guy will go (as he stood tall and "bigger).  BOTH guys in the front double bi shots are posing correctly.  Look at how tall the guy on the left is standing.  And look at how high his chest it.  Dude looks confident and like a statue and he isn't even all that great.  You look like a submissive guy who is ready to take 5th place and be happy with that placing (or go bitch on an internet chat board about why he lost).

2.  Your side chest shot - Again, you are fricken looking DOWN into the crowd and it is pulling your chest and shoulders down.  Find a point against the wall in the back and focus on that.  Look like a statue.  And, last but not least, if you don't stand TALL in that pose, your stomach will stick out like Coleman's.  Don't hunch over.  Don't look down.  Look out and keep your chest HIGH.  Look at the guy who took first.  Look at your waistlines.  Look how TALL he stands in his posing.

Like I said you were looking at the judges (I figured).  If I were judging and you were looking at me and smiling, I would think it was a tad weird.  Not gay or anything, but just a tad strange.  But, dude, I can tell you, looking down is KILLING your posture up there.

You need to practice in front of a mirror until you "feel" what it feels like to pose correctly.  Then you need to get used to doing it while NOT looking in the mirror.  Some guys are great "mirror posers" but completely fall apart when they can't see themselves.

Anyway, you do have nice muscularity.  Get the diet a tad tighter, get the posing down, and you would be blowing those guys away.  Serious.....

Youve got more muscle than the guy that won.  You are thicker, but lost on overall conditioning and smooth quads.   Another 2 weeks or so........  good job, and use it to power into your next comp.      Get that posture down, bro, stand high and wide. 8)

The reasons I would say:

Waistline is way to big for your height and weight
Conditioning is not good enough, primarly hamstrings. So the upper body and your legs don`t match

Rookies often take too much care about their weight and on competition day they are simply to heavy.
You have to learn that it doesn`t count how you feel, or how you look in clothes. If you`re ripped and 6-8 pounds lighter you`ll actually
look like you are heavier than that.

I agree, your posing was not up to par with you rphysique. Good jpb you look pretty good. AS to judging- LMAO..get used to it! COmpeting sucks, you just gotta wint the judges over, from the pics the guy that got first looked much more confident, and posed much better.

Better luck in the next one. ! You should of paced though.  :-\

couldn't have said it better...Popeye you need to come in tighter...To me(pictures alone) you look 3 weeks off...Esp. lower abs, hams and glutes... ...But Keep hitting it hard---you had the most muscle of the three of you...Just need to put it all together next time...keep it up

I am fairly new to this sight, but from what I see of your pics, your legs looked to be your week point.  Everyone else had more cuts....Your legs were to smooth.  Just didnt look like you were dry enough....Hope all this helps ya out for you next comp!  Good luck

As others have pointed out, during pre-judging your condition was a bit soft overall, your legs were no where close to the top 3. During the evening you looked better but not when it counted.

As one of the media photographers at these events I have gone back and studied your entire presence on stage and have to agree also with others that you need to work more on your posing and stage presentation. You spent more time in the call up trying to see what the others were up to as oppose to doing your thing, this of course breaks your form and any poise you may have.

Practice and you will get better on the posing.

Popeye,

With just over 2,500 photos from that event much more detail than N.P. coverage. There are many times during the call up on the required poses for which you broke form to check out other's status. I stand by what I wrote thou you may thing different.

However, the basic reason for the placement even with the call up is still those that have been covered here. Posing | Form | Presentation of the package.

And by the way along with the family and friends that i had there watching me i had a women from my gym watching me, and she's been in the sport for over 18 years and she figured i had atleast second locked up, being that she's almost a pro i think she knows her stuff.
  Oh and by the way that was supposed to be a level 1 show so why was there 2 masters in our division (1st.and2nd), there's no way it was their first show, the women that was watching me said she knew Greg and that he won so much down in the States that he has to come compete here now

Welcome to the BB world.  After hitting the stage a few times my focused has changed from my first show.  Now on my last day of contest prep. if I have improved from my last show I have "won" plan and simple.  I don't worry about the judges any more because it is very subjective and often related to who trainned you and how many years you have comp.

I don't even weigh myself after wed., why because I don't chase weight classes.  I deplete and load correctly.  If you start to watch your weight than if just screws around with your prep.

Now when I hit the stage I'm relaxed and having fun because I know I bought my best package and I already won.  I don't need a piece of plastic to prove the fact (even thou my wife and I are both prov. champs in our age group or weight class).  Than once the show is over you get back to the gym and work harder. 

My view of BB it is a Marathon not a sprint.  I hope you work your ass off real hard next year so they don't have a choice but to give you that piece of plastic with 1st on it.

   Great post Saskbb, i totally agree after 8 years of training that was the best i had, and even though i did'nt get the trophy, the fact that on lookers (strangers) thought i should of placed was telling me something :)

YOu looked great- and don't care about placings right now.  You had good conditioning, you're color looks great.. and I gotta say I'm glad to see yet another dude out there that competes but is not afraid to get some tatts put on.

If you knew anything about bodybuilding you'd know there is nothing suspicious about it.  Yes, gear can make you a little bloated buy also keep in mind that the muscles/abs through the mid-section of a competitor are beyond the level of development of a "fitness boy".  If popeye wanted to look like a little fit guy he wouldnt' be a competitive bodybuilder.

Popeye- that's a good shot- chest and arms look great.  Keep up the good work and tune out the negatives on here.
