I trained with a Zane a few times in Worlds in the early 80s. He generally did all the same exercises and sets as everyone else. At that time he was training six days a week, Chest/back, shoulders/arms, and legs, then start over. He generally did 4 sets of everything and the reps were 15-12, 12-10, 10-8, and 8-6 adding weight each set. Somewhere I have some old training journals where I wrote everything down. I will see if I can find them.

Yeah,

I'm sure he swam a lot, along with Chris Dickerson, and maybe Samir Bannout, Steeve Reeves, etc. ;D

But I think the guy had a top physique for the time. Also, his body had the appearance of being attainnable. As much as some people would want to look like Coleman or Cutler, even getting to Benfatto or Paris development is a feat. So that leaves the less-genetically gifted and non-pharmaceutically assisted individual with a guy like Zane to look up to. Now he looks like a swimmer, compared to todays "standard", and I'm sure he had to do quite a few laps, but maybe some people wanna look like "extreme" swimmers and still respect the monsters(possibly out of necessity).

Does Darrem Charles also swim?  ;)

Zane appeared as a regular on a TV show back in the 80's that featured an exercise and fitness segment. The show's name escapes me, but Zane would illustrate exercises and health tips in a 5 minute segment. He looked spectacular. Not the ripped up Olympia look, but his general year round shape. Without a doubt he had one of the best, balanced muscular physiques I had ever seen.

Winsor Pilates claims to give you that "lean, long look."

So, I'm assuming that is what he did.

Zane had a decent build. Lance Armstrong is built like a swimmer.

In his day, Frank Zane was very strong for his size and he trained extremely hard. A swimmer…. No way. Zane was awesome in his day!

Definitely the physique I'd love to arrive at in my forties.  It's a "real-life" look.

Zane had a good porn-star build.

Billy Glide has a similar look, and is totally shredded at all times!

It shows in his massive physique!  I can only imagine the intensity that went into building those 20" thighs!

Impavid intensity!

Zane may have been appealing to some re: aesthetics but IMO although aesthetics were his forte I don't think he had the most pleasing physique. Didn't have the best shape or flow between muscles compared with some others.

Examples are Makkawy, Birdsong, Nubret to name a few. That none of them won the Olympia while being at least comparable if not better reminds of the politics of BB.

Lol, some of you guys gotta be kidding here.  if you think Zane had such an "attainable" physique your out of your minds.  The guy was amazing!  The separation was incredible.  On stage I would love to see one of you guys that say Zane looked like a swimmer stand next to him.  He would RUIN your day.

Sure, but never kid yourself that a holder of a Sandow was 100% deserving either; you're making the mistake of forgetting that Weider & the IFBB were always highly commercial enterprises, first and foremost. IMO there is no way that he actually deserved 3 Sandows.

Nubret for example, was clearly superior to Zane in terms of structure & aesthetics, but never won. Robinson at least one year or more. Zane's aesthetics, the thing that he was known for, were not great IMO. There was a certain quality that was missing, maybe an image of power that doesn't have to be mutually exclusive from aesthetics, that he never had.

Eventhough I am not a big Zane fan....there's not too many people that do this in competition anymore:
