Like all great Mr Olympias ( Scott, Sergio,Arnold, Zane, Haney, Yates) , Ronnie Coleman took the sport of bodybuilding to a different level during his reign. Like him or not the man is worthy of respect in bodybuilding. His 286 ripped lbs in 2004 took bodybuilding to a whole other level. Like all new changes it takes time to determine if it is good or bad overall for the sport. For example, Zane proved that an under 200 lb bodybuilder could look incredible and gave the sport a whole new set of ideals during his time as champ ( 77-79).
This was eventually changed and we now have mass monsters at the top of the Olympia field.
Is Ronnie's new level of incredible mass , good or bad? Hard to say. I do know he did what it took to win the Olympia many times after being a 2nd tier bodybuilder his first few years as a pro.
Ronnie was a strong, powerful athlete BEFORE bodybuilding. He played DIV I college ball (linebacker ) at Grambling State U in La,where he also got his BA in accounting. He lifted huge wts as a powerflifter in his early lifting days. Ronnie was the only and I mean only Heavy wt finalist at the nationals, that was willing to take and then pass the drug test to represent the USA at the amatuer worlds in '91 (he won the worlds and turned pro).Obviously he is NOT drug free now, but he developed an incredible level body with little or no drugs from the start. He established a stable career as police officer in Texas and held that full time positin for his first years as Mr Olympia and only went part time a couple years ago. Ronnie trains like nobody has ever seen and has made incredible lifts we have seen in his training videos. He is hardcore to the nth degree and doesn't waste much time on bodybuilding gossip or negative talk.
He walks into any venue and it is easy to see why he is Mr Olympia. Tha man looks the part in terms on super human muscle size, no matter what outfit he has on.
Having said that, I think Jay should have beaten him last year and in 2000. OVERALL he is the best bodybuilder of the last 9-10 years.

Ronnie is the top guy yeh.
Every year the same shit happens on this board. People build up coleman hate, then olympia comes around and they do one of two things. Realise that coleman is the master and nobody is going to beat him or support another guy blindly. This is of course all taken back a few months later where everybody admits coleman has it.
If you check out the posts from around olympia, shitloads of people said jay should have won but as per usual by december the reality check was in and almost nobody questions the decision now. Ronnie is not the king of aesthetics or even the freakiest guy on stage but he is the clear winner.

Granteed we both agree that Ronnie is the top guy the last 8 years. But what about the 2000 Olympia? He slipped then in my opinion. It was very close last year.
-
Well I don't really remember the pics but it doesn't matter howie, like you said.. its really overall record more than any one particular victory.

at the 2000 Olympia Ronnie still dominated with no problem. It was 2001 where he slipped.

Ronnie in 2000. He obliterated Kevin from the back, and won most poses from the front that year as well. He was too heavy though.
-
ps - yes Ronnie is the best. The haters can go on and on, but the facts are this:
- no one in history has won more pro contests.
-he is about to become: a) the most decorated Mr. O. ever with 9 wins unless he screws up his contest prep. bad
b) the oldest Mr. O winner at 43.
-he has been on the Rosanne Arnold talk show, which is better than anything Arnold ever did :)

In 2000 Ron was 264 lbs and u say he was too heavy? What do you say 293 +/- lbs Ronnie was at MR O 2003?.....
-

Like becoming Governor of California?

at his 2003 bodyweight, he was still really, really ripped, except for a slight softening in the upper back.
iin 2000, he was a little softer, but still easily beat Kevin that year, who looked nothing like he did in the mid 90's.
Kevin was apparently bitching about loosing in 2000, but if you look at the videos and pics, he had no basis for complaints that year. If he had a back at all, he might have had a chance.
In 2002 though, I thnk Kevin's complaints were warranted. Ronnie was small, and depleted that year big time.
-
Yes, Ronnie is the greatest.
He should be a role model also for all those pros who struggle and get bad placings. Ronnie was overlooked for 6 years, and never complained. He worked hard and finally got what he deserved.
Also I think nobody loves body building more than him. He has nothing to prove and everything to lose. Every year he risks to be defeated by the younger lions but still he comes in looking better than the others.

i don`t like his "butterfly"ass

First, a couple of corrections - Ronnie weighed 296 in the 2004 MR O, not 286. Also, 2001 was the year where it was really close between Jay and Ronnie, not 2000 (and it was just that - close. Ronnie still won it convincingly enough). And I disagree with you where you say you think Jay should have beaten Ronnie last year (2005) - anyone who has seen the video of the night show would agree with me.
IMO, Ronnie is a phenom who is simply superior to everyone else physically. He is easily the freakiest Mr O, if not the freakiest bodybuilder ever, overall. He has so many standout bodyparts and more than anything else, has incredible muscle separation. Not trying to turn this into a Dorian Vs Ronnie thread or anything, but if Dorian set the standard for density and condition, Ronnie set the standard for muscle volume, size and muscle separation. All the top guys (and others) have both flaws and strengths, and Ronnie has his flaws - Calves (shape, not size) and abs (distention). Guys like ND bring these up again and again, but the simple truth is that 'The whole is greater than the sum of the parts'. For example, by breaking it down part by part, one could argue that Shawn should have beaten Dorian in 1994 but take one look at the video or even the pics and it's obvious that it was night and day between them.
What I really like about Ronnie is that he seems like a nice guy when it comes to dealing with others (like his fans), but lifts like an animal in the gym. I am not talking about doing high reps on cables or dropsets on machines (although he does do those), but the way he does basic free-weight, compound, old-school movements. Its one thing to have the genetic potential / gift to lift heavy and hard, but another thing altogether to ACTUALLY do it. Even precontest, he doesnt 'stick to light weights and pumping movements' (referred to as Training smart by some pros ::)) This is what I respect in a bodybuilder above everything else - training with a passion, as opposed to Training smart and treating it as a mere business.
People may pick on all of what they consider as flaws, with Ronnie such as his articulation etc, but the thing is inspite of all his shortcomings, he has achieved the Number 1 status in his field and even more, stayed there for 8 years. This in itself is phenomenal, but when you consider that he started his journey to the Olympia from the bottom of the heap (literally), it is nothing short of miraculous (not to mention laudable). Of course, its in the nature of mediocrities to resent another person's achievements and hence all the bullsh*t about Ronnie not being articulate etc. Personally, of all the bodybuilders, I admire Dorian Yates the most for his attitude and work ethic. But I admire Ronnie just as much for what he has achieved with his physique.

erm ... NO .
ronnie looked f'uckin disgustin in 2004 .. he may have been 'ripped' in your opinion .. meanin low bf .. but he certainly wasnt dry or hard. he was f'uckin oozin all over the place with a massively distended belly.
dorian took the mass game to the max while maintainin shockin dryness and density. ronnie proves you can only outsize dorian by comin onstage like a distended bag of water.

thank you for your opinions, i was just in the gym 8) anyone else?

ronnie is the most heavily muscled mr olympia ever,he is the best right now i believe

Any of these multiple winners has trouble maintaining the greatness, especially with advancing age. Yates looked like shit and clearly didn't look like a winner a few times. He never had the huge advantages Coleman does to fall back on when coming in less than great.
Ron didn't look as good recently and would be better off retiring soon, but unlike Yates he's so much farther ahead of everyone else he can still get away with it and win looking less good.

RONNIE > YATES
-
Ronnie is the most heavily muscled human being ever to walk the planet. He carries so much muscle that it's actually become detrimental to his physique, he's too big. Dorian was a great champ....but he never carried as much muscle as Ronnie.
-
Yes, I think Ronnie is the best. Jay slaughtered him in 2001, Kev should have won in 2002 and I feel it was too close to call in 05, but overall Ronnie is king.

This post should be archived. It was one of the most profound, genius things I've ever read. I'll never forget this:
"Ronnie proves you can ony outsize Dorian by coming onstage like a distended bag of water."
So true. Ronnie loses too much in quality when he competes over 250 lbs. He loses his greatest strenghs: his phenomenal muscle separation and taper. You can't go against Dorian when it comes to mass and density while still maintaining symmetrical balance. You just can't.

Ok , I've given Ronnie a hard time on he truce thread, but the reality is that he's one of the best bodybuilders ever. His physique at the 98 and 99 Os was astounding! :o I never saw so much details on a 250 lbs bodybuilder, witth such a tiny waist. Just awesome. It's hard for me to criticize Ronnie, because he's one of my top five bodybuilders ever.
I just think, that he Dorian Yates from the 93 and 95 Os, had so much dense muscle and echiness, on such a superb structure, that I still have o give the nod to him over Ronnie. But yeah, the 98 O Ronnie would take out the 97 O Dorian - at least to me -, even though the 97 O Dorian defeats the 98 O Ronnie on ALL andatory poses. I would still give the victory to Ronnie, despite this, because his muscle separation and taper were just so fantastic. But if it is the 2003 or 300 Os Ronnie against the 97 O Dorian, then I give it to Dorian. The lesser of two evils. :o :-\

Pretty soon you will be bashing yates when it comes to comparing him to King Ron :)

Hmmm...not really. I you read my post carefully, you'd see that I still prefer the 93 O Dorian over any version of Ronnie. But yeah, ronnie did look fantastic in 98 and 99. We have in common the fact that we both consider Ronnie a superb bodybuilder - or at least some versions of him; the difference is that only one of us gives Dorian his props. ;)

It's very hard to give Yates props:
1/ Was never that good and took BB in some negative directions.
2/ He was obnoxiously arrogant, which didn't help. Actually believed he was better than guys who deserved at times to humble him.
Overall, those two things don't make him appealing, needless to say.
