So I want some tunes for the gym. Should I just go with the Ipod Shuffle, or say what the hell and go for the Nano? I probably will only use it at the gym so maybe the shuffle is more than sufficient?
And how do you get the songs on em? How much are the songs?
clueless ???
-
The fascination with Ipod's is nothing more than a fad.
There are MP3 players that are just as good if not better for a lot less money. And you won't be stuck using Itunes.

no kidding, i got the wife a mp3 player for next to nothing and since i have over 500 cd's she has all the music she wants for free no downloading.
-
They even now make them in the shape of a gun! ;D ;D ;D
-
lololz @ flip
so any recommendations for a cheap one?
You can get them now for anywhere between $50 to as high as $299, but make sure of a couple of things:
1. That it's easy to upload music. If you've never done it, it does take some time and if you have one that's complicated to do this, you would have wasted your money. Buy it at Circuit City or Bestbuy because they have 30 return policies for ANY reason except destruction.
2. Make sure you like how it is strapped or clipped to your clothing or body. Last thing you want is the thing getting in the way while you workout.
3. Find out where you are going to upload your music from. Most people get it from the internet, others download their cd's to their computer then upload it to their mp3 player. Don't pay too much for membership to a download site. Anything over $10.00 per month in my opinion is too much.
Last but not least, make sure you DO NOT wear it it while you mow the lawn because you sound destructive whilst you do it!! ;D
-
They are simple. USB connect to your computer and it's just like another hardrive.
Who pays to download music??? So much free online, there is no reason to pay.
-
Flower, call me when you get it. I'll help you with limewire
-
The Ipod Shuffle is like $69. I have no clue on how any of them are downloading wise, but I would like it to be simple. ::)
As you noted the shuffle is $69. If a player is much cheaper than that, it’s probably not a good product. And no other player can offer the integration of player to iTunes. Critics like to talk about being locked into iTunes or being forced to download music. Both gripes are silly.
I’ve been using iTunes for 6 years and I’ve purchased less than 10 songs in all that time. My ipod has more than 1300 song songs it. You can use and enjoy itunes and your ipod with all your existing CDs or any CD you borrow from a friend without ever purchasing a song or videos on the music store.
Being locked into itunes is like being locked into a BMW or Mercedes. Sure there are other brands and platforms but why would you want less than the best? It’s a free download for god’s sake!
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download it now… load a few CDs into it and sample it. If you like the interface and find it intuitive you’ll like the ipod as well.
Remember, Apple is known for simplicity and ease of use; no one has ever said that about owning a PC. That itunes is available for Macs and PCs gives PC users a taste of what Apple users have always enjoyed. There is probably an Apple store near you. Visit one and see it all in action if you are the least bit anxious about installing anything new on your current PC.
btw, there is still tons of free music to be downloaded on services like limewire.
-
Get an iPod. There is a reason they are so popular.Seamless integration with the Apple Music Store. iTunes is the best software around. WMP sucks in comparison. The scroll wheel is great. iPods outsell any other player by a margin of more than 20 to 1. iPods in fact outsell the rest of the digital music players COMBINED by a wide margin.
-
Ipods don't work with Windows ME. :(
Woe unto you! :'(
Are there (m)any players and jukeboxes that work with ME? What is the benefit of ME over Win 2000 or XP?
-

I would not wear it mowing the lawn, I need to be undistracted. ;D
Bought the wife a 1gig shuffle.....she loves it.......the 512 mb holds about 30-35 3 minute songs and the 1 gig is twice that.....she loves it and it works well whether she's liftin weights, on a stairmaster or in one of her cardio classes. Anything compatible will be perfect for you!
-
I'll say it again, Ipod's especially the shuffle (which offers no screen) are no better than any other brand name MP3 player. I have a Samsung YP-T7, it's 1 GB. It's tiny, sounds great, it couldn't be easier to use or download and organize songs on. It reads Word and Excel files, JPEG's, it has an FM reciever and it's a voice recorder. It comes with a belt clip, loop to wear around your neck and quite a few attachments. I think I paid $154 for it about 18 months ago. Oh and the ear buds are excellent, the sound quality is also excellent.
I promise you Ipods offer no real benefit over a good quality name brand MP3 player. Just make sure the drive is flash based and not hard disk based.

uhm...........$100 or so I just want it for the gym :-\
and I have Windows ME so it has to work with that.
Your biggest issue is going to be finding one that works with ME. Time to upgrade your OS.

That's some expensive shit! ;D
-
I have an OS. I am not going to go buy a different one so I can have an Ipod.
that'd be really silly :)
And no, it is not free to wipe my ass. I charge $12.95 ;D
Upgrading your OS isn't just about an MP3 player.
ME is based on ancient architecture.
Windows XP is going to be second class in a few months. I'm installing Vista right now.
With an old OS your limited in many areas.
You might start having problems finding drivers for printers and scanners and any other new hardware you buy.

i did not think its cost to wipe you butt i figured you would just ask someone else to go for you and wipe it also. but 12.95 is steep does that include anything in the price or just the 2 ply shuffel?

You’re not making a lot of sense. I don’t know anyone who buys an mp3 player because it can read Word, Excel, or JPEG files. Would anyone even want to use/read such files on a tiny screen? I have never before even heard of opening those files as a criteria for choosing an mp3 player.
Flower has said she wants to spend $100. A product that sells for $154 is not much good to her. For that amount of money she would be looking at an ipod Nano ($149)—not an ipod Shuffle and a the Nano has a crisp color screen and is a flash based player.
No one who will be listening to his/her own CD library is locked into itunes. CDs can be ripped over and over again into any format or any player one may choose in the future.
One does need itunes to use an ipod, but I hasten to add that I used itunes for 2 years before the ipod was even introduced/invented. With a good set of speakers attached to your computer, you can use and enjoy itunes and never own a ipod.
Going with a shuffle will give Flower access to the music store which—in addition to selling music—has a huge library of podcasts from broadcasters like NPR, ESPN, the New York Times, NBC News, VH1, ABC News, and literally hundreds of others. Looking for your favorite (explicit) comedy skit/show? You can get it as a free podcast at itunes Audiobooks? Itunes has them too. Ipod or Samsung? The choice is a no brainer.

All true. You might think you’re happy with ME but if you want to do things and can’t because you’re on an ancient OS then maybe you’re not as happy as you think you are. If I had my druthers I’d put you on an iMac but if you’re gonna be on Windows at least get the modern OS. Btw, the imac can run Windows now too.

Using Win ME begs the question: how old is your computer? Sounds like you really need to visit an Apple store. :-\

Hmmm, where shall I begin.
First off you're a MAC guy so anything with the Apple logo you are immediately drawn to.
Second, you're trying to obscure the topic. Of course no one buys an MP3 player because it can read Word files or because you can view pictures with it I was merely pointing out that it also offered those things and that I paid $154, 18 months ago I couldn't touch an Ipod of similar resources for $154. THAT WAS MY POINT. GET IT OR ARE YOU STILL SEEING THIS POST THROUGH APPLE COLORED LENSES? I never told her to buy the particular MP3 player I bought.
You remind me of the CPU warriors. There are those that fight to the death saying that Intel makes the best and then there's another group that says AMD builds the best. Of course this is in the PC world not the MAC world so you might not be familiar with it although some new MAC's have Intel processors.
Please, allow me to state this again because you seem to be missing it.
I NEVER TOLD FLOWER TO BUY MY $154 MP3 PLAYER, I WAS POINTING OUT WHAT MINE OFFERED AND HOW MUCH IT COST. IN FACT SHE DIDN'T TELL ME WHAT HER BUDGET WAS UNTIL AFTER I TOLD HER OF MY MP3 PLAYER.
Please try and follow me, in order to download songs, no matter where they come from (i.e. Limewire, Bittorrent or itunes) you have to use Itunes in order to put the songs onto an Ipod, that is being locked to Itunes. I don't see how you can say it isn't.
When I want to put songs on my MP3 player all I do is highlight the song and copy it to the MP3 player, it couldn't be easier. I've used both so don't try arguing this point.
I love your rationale on the podcasts too. lol You're a piece of work, exactly like the Intel AMD warriors.

Flower, lemme cut to the chase, go to Best Buy and ask for a chick-friendly, Windows ME compatible MP3 player for $100 or less........otherwise, these board stalkers will send you MP3 players covered in their jizz and shit if you're not careful.

i got an iPod for my birthday last year. Too bad i was runnin Win98SE at the time. I had to buy WinXP esp. for the iPod, so i did. I have never regretted that decision, because i'm in love with my iPod, and WinXP is far superior to 98SE
It's easy to use and works fine.
IMO, for what it's worth : Upgrade to WinXP, buy an iPod.
Peace
D
-
IPOD shuffle. it is the only thing that doesnt skip when i am running or lifting (In my experience anyway)
-
I just bought a printer/fax/scanner/copier last year. I never use it to print so the ink cartridges dried up before they ran out. ::) I got this computer in 2000 or 2001.
I use it to surf the net, bust balls on message boards, email, and store/send pics. I never use the CD thingy cept when I backed up a bunch of my pics once. I don't play games, I don't burn anything.
I really don't have any reason to upgrade. Plus I would probably muck it up or something, then I would have nothing and be really really angry. >:(
You sound like a typical user. But you probably do need to upgrade your OS to Win 2000 or XP to get the most out of it such as using an MP3 player. Get a nerdy friend to help do it or do it for you. Once it's set up there should be little to no upkeep required. Whatever mp3 player you decide to get make sure that your computer has the ports to connect with it (firewire or USB).
-
While your nerdy friend is at it...Before the XP upgrade, have him install the maximum amount of RAM that your cpu can take. XP has system requirements that your current computer may not have.
Holy shit...A serious post :o
:)
-
have y'all heard of police stopping or ticketing an individual for wearing this appliance while driving
-
Hi Flowey. I have an IPod...whatever model it is that holds 1000 songs. You can load your own CDs and purchase tunes from iTunes as well. It seems like when I first set it up I could purchase songs from other places as well. Yes, I BUY my online tunes! ;D
Here at home, we've never changed yet from dial-up and it takes at least 1/2 hour to download a song from iTunes :(. But tranferring an entire CD of your own takes no time at all.
-
Download DC++.
Great Swedish software, similar to Napster. Will allow you to download tons of great porn and music.
Here's a suggestion though: Search "Directories" if looking for entire albums.
Problem with DC++ is I heard it's not as fast in the US as it is in Sweden.
I get D/L at around 500 KB/s, and 1500 KB/s at its fastest.
Check it out though.
Google "DC++" for the site to download it from. I think it's sourceforge.net or something like that.

I got a Sony, holds about 345 songs waaaaaaaay more than I would ever use. Already put a cd and a few other songs on it. I need to eventually find some different ear buds, I have teeny baby ears and most earbuds hurt. :(
Hedgie, I don't speak Swedish. ::)
Uh oh, the Ipodiphiles are going to be upset with your decision.

You might start having problems finding drivers for printers and scanners and any other new hardware you buy.
You are installing a beta of Vista. No where near a finished product. Who knows how many thousands of bugs are in it. You get no support from Microsoft. If you have a problem you are on your own. Windows XP will be supported for a long, long time to come. It is still shipping in every PC made today and will be for up to another year. Windows 2000 is almost eight years old and it is still supported by Microsoft and drivers are readily available for it for any modern printer, scanner, camera. etc.. Vista is still vaporware at this point. When it is officially released you will need a modern computer with at least a 3 GHz processor, a gig of ram, and a video card with 128 megs of vram for it to run worth a shit.

Whew. Someone in this thread with half a brain. Right and right. Man, our gym is filled with these girls with the skank-whore Jessica Simpson goggles, the I Pod, the Ugg boots with a displayed Starbuck's coffee. Can't tell one from another. These girls are now reducing themselves to commodities. Drives me nuts.
/so yeah. can't stand the i-pod. rant over.

Yes, I installed the Beta version of Vista on a dual boot system, I'm also running XP Pro SP2. I just installed Vista to get a look at it and see how if feels and you're absolutely right regarding it being no where near a finished product. I can't find any drivers that will work with it so pretty much the only thing it's good for is surfing the web. I will say it's got a nice new look to it, at least in that regard I like it.
As for 2000 still being supported, if I'm not mistaken XP is based on 2000 so of course it makes sense that Microsoft still supports it. I believe Vista is based on Microsoft's Server OS and the drivers are few and far between.
I'm trying to get hold of the Beta 2 version of Vista, from what I've read it's a somewhat improved from the first Beta.
I'm still trying to learn Linux, having a hell of a time installing Red Hat.
-
I was not going to upgrade my OS anytime soon, if ever. So I did what I had to do. ::)
flower, let me know how you like it and if the damn thing gets in the way of your workout or cardio seesions.

My Ipod has just gone tits up, uncannily just after the one year warranty has finished.
It's stuck in Disk mode and I have tried all the tips on the Apple site to reset it, but it is not having any of it.
I'm seriously considering replacing it with a Creative Zen or a Sony.

You should post a query in one or more ipod forums. When you do so be sure to identify your computer configuration: hardware, OS, RAM, ipod model, etc.

Agreed. Get the Nano if you're on a buget. Choosing a Shuffle is like buying a bicycle when what you want is a car.

I'm so excited my friend just bought me an Black Ipod Nano. It is so cool. I had a Sony Mp3 player and it was great to but the Ipod is just more fashionable. And really easy to use. I hate the headphones so I will buy new ones tommorrow.

get the Mobiblu, worlds smallest player also rivals shuffle for sound quality, has a built in fm radio ,fm radio recorder, voice recorder and clock, all displayed on a screen and is less than 1 inch cubed, $99 for 1gb version in walmart

Bingo, and that's exactly why Ipods sell so well.
The masses flock to what's vogue. The fact that it's price is inflated and it's functionality is limited by Itunes has no affect.
-
I still need some different ear buds. Or maybe those inner ear ones?
My ears are too tiny or sumptin. :P
-
Yes I hate the earplugs to that come with the Ipod. I spent $40 on ITunes least night. I can't believe it. It was so fun. I am ready to go.

I also have an ipod that I use at the gym. It holds 3500 songs, I also have the case to keep it in, hook on my pants or stick in a cup holder when I do cardio. I would advise anyone to get the warranty when you purchase your ipod. I had to have mine replaced 3 times, well worth the money. Funny thing, my laptop had to be replaced 3 times also. Something about me and electronics....

Didn't you insist a few months ago that you were not going to upgrade to XP? Why the change of heart? Oh well, congrats.

How much music does one GB hold?
-
Depends how long the tracks are I suppose - but my wife's IPod has got 9gb filled so far and is holding 1600 songs so far. So estimated, 1gb would probably let you hold about 150+ tracks.
-
Now that you have XP, are you going to try iTunes? It’s a free download and you can use it with the Music/CDs you already have... plus you can listen to thousands of podcasts... again all free! :)
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
-
If it won't cost me anything for songs, sure! The school one all songs are free. :)
One of the cool things about iTunes is that you never HAVE to buy music on-line to use it. I’ve been using it since it came out in (I think it was 2001) and in that time I’ve only purchased 7 songs from the Music Store for .99 cents each, but my iTunes library has more than 2000 songs in it. Most of that consists of music from my own CDs I loaded into it and the rest is from mp3 files I’ve downloaded over the years.
Access to the thousands of free podcasts alone make iTunes worth the download. Once you download and install it check out the podcasts! I guarantee you’ll love it!
Once you use iTunes for a while you’ll see why it’s so popular. :D

Thanks, will do!
I still need some comfy ear buds though. >:(
Can't help you with that. Any time you read an ipod review, ear bud reviews are usually not far behind, but I place little value in those reviews. Ears are very individual and what is comfortable for someone else may not be comfortable for me (or you!)
I can however reccomend Altec Lansing speakers for your computer.

If you’re on a budget, this is the best value!
