I think that Gracie was in lots of pain from the straight armbar inflicted by Matt Hughes. I paused it and saw Royce's left arm bent at an unusual angle. What amazed me most was that Royce did not even wince in pain. I think he would rather have his arm broken then tap to Matt Hughes. Royce was even trying to control Matt's left leg from stepping over while having his arm broken.

Renzo and Royler didn't tap against Saku and they both suffered arm injuries as a result, so I think Royce would have done the same.
-
Royce would never have tapped.
I knew it was either going to be a stoppage or choke... Since he'd let hughes break his arm before he tapped.

Royce would rather have his arm broken off before tapping out
That armbar looked painful - ouch :'(
-
I don't doubt that he'd have let it broken before tapping. I don't think he knows how to tap. Hughes had that arm bar locked on tight, too...
-
How Ironic. I believe that move is on the old "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Basics" tapes.
-
That arm is going to hurt like a bitch for weeks to come.

anyone catch the musclemilk on the gi of royce? cytosport is sponsoring jiujitsu now
-
He would have let it break. No doubt in my mind.

I wonder if they're claiming credit for his physique? ;D
-
so what's the deal ?
they let gracie wear a gi into the ring and then he had to peel it off once the bell rang ?

CSAC rules; no uniform or shoes and 4-6 oz gloves. Lots of guys wear their gi's as a sign of respect to their discipline.

Let's hope not! : ;)

I think most people, including the announcers, overestimated exactly how tight that armbar was. Royce had Matt's trapped leg pretty stretched out, and was pushing Matt's free leg with his (Royce's) free right arm. Matt was pretty much flat on the ground.
Matt was using mostly arm strength, as his midsection was pretty much taken out of the equation by Royce's defense, to apply the hold. That's why you didn't see Royce appear to be in any pain, because he wasn't.
-
I respect Royce for what he's accomplished, but after watching his fight Saturday night, he needs to hang the gloves up!
-
There's no way Royce taps to Hughes. Courageous effort, but Royce had no chance in hell

Funny you mention arm and submitting... Try and check out a fight Kimura vs Helio Gracie.
