successful how? as in retaining mass?
-
takes naps wherever possible. 15-20 mins. it all helps.
-
i think the so called need for 8 hrs. sleep is very overrated, i'm at my best and most alert and energized with 5-6 per night but i also sleep very deep and have vivid dreams, i think the quality of the sleep is way more important than quantity.
-
um ok that was funny o yer soooo funny ::)
-
I think sarcasm has something here, but, it is also very individual in nature.
If you want to do it, do it gradually. Like 15 extra less for a week, then another after that. I think that would be easiest.
I for some reason feel like crap if I get any less than 7 hours of sleep.
It also has a lot to do with your activitiy level while awake. Oddly enough though, some remarkable olympic athletes maintain they do not get more than 5 hours of sleep before their event. They think it keeps their body a little more awake if they are accustomed to more sleep.
-
I sleep very little, and have for over a decade. Works fine for me :)

Makes sense.

Right now I am teaching 2 full summer school classes hrs are from 8 am to 5:20 pm with only a 40 min lunh, so yeah I am sleeping less now, but only until June 27.
I read that Mentzer did his best pre contest prep on aprox 5 hrs per night, claims he was hyped???
I have heard that from other bodybuilders however. At times my body gets too sluggish on too much sleep.
I set a PR on the hammer hack squat today ( 6 plates a side for 6 full reps), so I am getting stringer with less sleep overall...who knows?

sleep is great

anything less than 8 i feel like shit
me too

It's very personal, it usually between 6-8 hours, there are however exceptions. There is no workaround, stimulants may work for a while but in the end you can't change your biorithm.
-
I have problems sleeping. i.e. last night i think i got 3 hours and just laid there for the remaining time. I had a great work out tonight so it doesnt seem to affect my strength however i sit on my arse in an office all day so i can conserve my energy.. as for robbing me of growth. i would say more than likely.
I've found staying up later seems to help and writing down any thoughts on paper to get that crap out of my head...

Your results may vary.
For me anything less than 8 is detrimental.
-
I sleep between 3 and 5 hours a night. I have been this way forever. I just don't sleep much
-
See to me that is unfathomable onlyme, I would collapse after even a decent length day if I only had 3 hours sleep.
Thats why I say your results may vary.
Its lucky I have a really easy job. Otherwise I'd be in trouble.

I wish I only needed 3. I'd get so much more shit done I'd never be late 4 work.

Sleeping is for babies, you sleep when you are dead.
-
I'm too old to get less than 8hrs of sleep
-
i need at least 8...i tried 6 but it decreased my energy big time...i think everyone is different
-
I'm a big baby and need about 9 hours to feel best. Everyone's different, but you do require less when you get older.
-
:o i sleep 23 hours a day
-
I also heard that less shower will help you to maintain your mass than letting it washed away
-
i have a rare form of insomnia and i only sleep 4-5 hours a week and i don't get sleepy at all but my case is severely diffrent than all of your ;)
-
I like setting an alarm for about 8.5 or 9....anymore and im tired and lazy all day.
-
Personally if I take a 15-20 minute power nap every 3 hrs, I only need to truly sleep maybe 2-3 hrs a night...

BRILLIANT! (Did he wake up in a sack in the east river after his girlfriend thought he died?) Thanks for the Seinfeld reference.
-
Actually only once and thank god only once I fell into such a deep sleep coma they thought I was dead..
And in case I forget...Happy Festivus to you all!
-
I sleep till I get up and then take naps as needed. I usually don't go to work till the evening, about 5 or so. My doctor has me on Valium so maybe thats why i sleep so well.
-
Sleep is very important IMO. GH is released while you sleep. You recover and grow while you sleep. I actually feel my best when I get 8 or 9 hours (which usually only happens on the weekends).

interesting topic.
how about this:
"Although it’s a common belief that 8 hours of sleep is required for optimal health, a six-year study of more than one million adults ages 30 to 102 has shown that people who get only 6 to 7 hours a night have a lower death rate.
Individuals who sleep 8 hours or more, or less than 4 hours a night, were shown to have a significantly increased death rate compared to those who averaged 6 to 7 hours. "

"Although the data indicated the highest mortality rates with long-duration sleep, the study could not explain the causes or reasons for this association."

6-7 hours per night
-
7 hours is best for me. If on the weekend i perhaps sleep too much I become more tired. Too much sleep is not good either.
