Title: Steve Reeve's diet!!
Post by: alexxx on June 21, 2006, 04:18:44 PM
Can somebody please explain to me what the hell the following is? Thank you!

In 'Building the Classic Physique"  Reeves described his diet as following:

Breakfast = Protein shake with 14 oz of OJ, 1 tablespoon of Knox gelatin, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 banana, 2-4 raw eggs, 2 tablespoons of high protein power or high energy cereal - one cut apple, grated small carrot, 1/4 cup of raw oatmeal, 1/4 cup of bran, 2 teaspoons of bee pollen, 1/4 cup of wheat germ, 1/4 cup of almonds, 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 cup of milk.

Lunch = Cottage cheese with a handful of nuts and raisins with 2 pieces of fruit.

Dinner = Huge salad, 1 swordfish steak, turkey, tuna or lean ground beef.

Also apparently his mother was a nutritionalist. Just thought it would be interesting.

Yup thats his diet , he ate just 3 times a day !! he retired bodybuilding at 24 because he won every single major contest and the sport lacked challenges , its safe to assume we never really so Steve Reeves as good as he could have been and thats a freaky thought !!

I seem to recall reading that Steve suffered a torn shoulder while filming one of his movies and he felt that Knox gelatin played a crucial role in the healing process, so he had some on a daily basis.

Dan-O,

It was a stomach ulcer, I believe.

He said the Knox gelatin healed it quickly and he claimed that further tests showed zero scar tissue in the area...as if he never had the hole. :o

I think the story is in his book. Can't remember. :-\

If that's accurate how many calories do you estimate that is? I don't think 5-6 meals a day is necessary, but still, a good amount of calories should be there

Yes bodybuilders are way overfed.

Indeed, they are "overfed". That's how you build mass: You eat MORE CALORIES than you burn.

Whether it's three meals, four meals, five meals, or six meals, you will NOT grow, unless you have a caloric surplus.

Too many would-be bodybuilders simply don't eat/drink enough calories. Yet, they bleat and whine about being not being "genetically gifted". What's worse is that some folks tend to feed the apathy of those guys, who struggle by labeling them "hardgainers".

I used to think of myself in the same fashion. But, when I started to increase my calories, at times drinking more protein than I actually ate, I started growing a whole lot faster. Thankfully, I don't need as many calories as I did a decade ago. But, the principle still works. If 4000 calories doesn't get it done, bump it up to 4500. If that don't get it, go to 5000. But, whatever the case may be, when it comes to building mass, QUALITY and QUANTITY of calories are essential for success.

Perfection.

See what I mean, all of you fruitcakes out there bitching and whining about how bad fruit is for you when dieting and how you need post workout carbs, this that and tons of other bullshit are really just lost.

I think since people have been following the gym knowledge and bullshit in the magazines, they have in fact gotten worse.

Everything about bodybuilding is easy and should be easy. Why make it difficult?

Ok, I just calculated the entire diet.

Calories: 2383
Protein:214 grams
Carbs:213 grams
Fat:75 grams

Not a damn thing wrong at all with this diet.

I also had no idea that Knox Gelatin Contained the Following Nutrient profile:

1 Ounce of this stuff looks like this:

Calories 84      ( Kilojoules 351 )

    % Daily
Value*
Total Fat 0 g 0%
   Saturated Fat 0 g 0%
Cholesterol 0 mg 0%
Sodium 0 mg 0%
Total Carbohydrates 0 g 0%
   Dietary Fiber 0 g 0%
   Sugars 0 g
Protein 33.4 g

Interesting.  I think these guys had it down unlike the majority of pseudo-scientific losers of today.

Where did you come up with these bullshit values. How can you have 33.4 g of protein in an ounce when an ounce is 28g itself? Hmmm.

Also 33.4 g protein doesnt equate to 84 calories at all.

So where's the calorie surplus in Reeve's diet

Reeves didn't need a lot of calories to grow. Good for him. But, just because Reeves grew on 2400 calories and 215 grams of protein doesn't mean that everybody else can.

My point basically stands: Increase the calories, until you start growing. If 2400 can get the job done, so be it. But, if you're not growing on that amount of food, it is absolutely FOOLISH to keep eating that same amount, just because Reeves (or some other bodybuilder) did so with success.

That's one thing that Arnold Schwarzenegger stressed. Bodybuilders should find out what works for them and keep doing it and stop doing things that don't work. That's why he stopped making preacher curls the primary biceps exercise in his arm routine. If he had kept blindly doing so, simply because Larry Scott swole up his arms doing that exercise almost exclusively, he would not have had the success he did.

I know for a fact, there's NO WAY I'd grow eating that particular amount of food. I can't do it now, and I certainly couldn't have done so a decade ago, when it took FAR MORE calories than that to get me over 200 lbs.

Years back there was an article in MuscleMag on Reeve's training & nutrition philosophies which I found very interesting reading. That drink he made w/knox gelatin is, when you think of it a precursor to today's gatorade. He also had several ways of "tweaking" different exercises such as the db laterals pouring a glass of water, where the weight load should be optimally placed on flyes for chest etc.Tried them all myself & yup, the guy knew what he was doing.Wish I still had that issue.

As good as Reeves looked remember his best weight was 185.  He didn't need tons of calories to maintain that.  Also it was the 60's-70's and getting protein wasn't as easy as it is today.  Reeves had the perfect 18.  Neck, bi's and calf's all 18".  In his biography it says he didn't use juice till he was in Europe, retired from bodybuilding, making Hercules movies.  If He had the nutritional education that's come out in the last few years, I think his diet would of had a few tweaks.  Look at his supplement line.  JMHO and the protein in Knox gelatin is so incomplete, no nutritionist would count that as grs. of protein in his diet.
