Title: Toys for BigBoys@Apollon Gym
Post by: muscleforlife on June 22, 2006, 08:55:18 AM
I did ask Manoli how to use it.  He explained to me it takes 3 people to use.
One to release the bar, one to pump the hydraulic and the person who is actually squatting.

Big weights only, I do believe he said it goes up to 1200lbs.    I have got to make a special trip to take pics of it in use.

I'm sure some of you big uns' are salivating over this toy.

I would imagine that you would have to be a Diesel MoFo to even attempt to get on that puppy.

Man, some of u guys are just masters of "1-line putdowns".  Hilarious.

Anywya, I believe that's one of those lifts designed for powerlifting contests.

It saves the guy doing the 1000 lb squat attempt from having to unrack the weight, step back, and then after the lift, step forward + rerack.

Purists think that the above motions are part of the lift, but I don't midn this thing. Heck of a lot more legit than all those stupid bench shirts.

It is a monolift which allows the lifter to just stand up with the weight and then squat.  There is no need for a walk-out with the bar on your back.  They are used in many powerlifting meets.

No, the hydraulic part just allows you to raise or lower the bar for various height lifters.  The hooks swing away from the lifter after he/she stands and then they can perform the squat.  No need to walk with the weight like a normal rack.

Thank you Chris for the exact name of the thing.  Even those with muscles bigger than their brains should be able to understand your post.

Ask Ed Coan for his opinion ;)

My big problem with these monolifts are how they, coupled with extremely liberal ruling, allow for ridiculous quarter squats like Chuck Vogelpohls 1000 lbs squat.

It wouldn't surprise me if Chuck Vogelpohl couldn't squat 660 lbs unequipped to legal depth.

you've never heard of a Monolift? they're used at just about any powerlifting meet nowadays and most hardcore gyms have one.

They are rare in gyms.  They will be found mainly in hardcore powerlifter gyms, which there are few of anyhow.

That's pretty cool.  We've had one in Strong & Shapely in East Rutherford for years.  Do you have any pictures of anyone actually using it?  Apollon Gym seems like a pretty decent gym, how many sq ft?
