Title: Heavy Weight Training

My chiropractor informed me that heavy weight training could be harmfull to you.  She said that constant heavy weight training, constricts the capilliaries in your heart, which can later damage it.  What do you guys think?

This is a serious question for me, because I train heavy as much as I can.  I want to know whats the basis of this type of thinking?

id listen to her on advice on your bones and stuff but id take her heart advice with a grain of salt,heavy resistance training has been proven to strengthen the heart not hurt it

she never took into consideration that maybe they ate a whole cow for breakfast and 400 whole eggs for lunch,diet  and genetics pretty much determine heart health

The lifters that died relatively young also abused anabolic hormones for years.  Steroids have been shown to elevate the bad cholesterol and lower the good (while lowering the overall count) which may have contributed to their problems.  I also believe that they contribute to earlier onset of cancer in those who abuse them for extended periods.

Lifting, in and of itself, most likely does not have a detrimental effect on one's health.  You can look to men of the pre-steroid era to see that many of them lived longer than average lives.

How exactly would heavy weight training "constrict the capillaries of the heart?" Increased blood flow causes constriction of blood vessels? Riiiiiiiight.....

She also recommended I get a stress test done because of all the heavy lifting that I had been doing.

Did she read this in some tea leaves she was brewing?

I think you should consult your herbalist, naturopath, and homeopath for a clearer advice.

Either that or look for the guy with the giant vertebrae/human skeleton in the shopping mall and ask him.

Aw man!Dont listen to that broad.She's not a doctor.What the hell buisness dose she have telling you about your heart.Chiropractors dont go to medical school.Unless your MD says you have cardiovascular issues.I say rock n' roll.

"Static or heavy resistance exercise: When an exercise causes a muscle to use more than about 25 percent of its strength, such as during heavy weight lifting, the pressure within the muscle increases and causes the small blood vessels (arterioles and capillaries) in the muscle to collapse. When this happens, oxygen-rich blood cannot reach the muscle. Reducing the amount of blood flowing to the working muscle during static or heavy resistance exercise can cause temporary pain in the muscle.

This lack of oxygen, called tissue hypoxia, causes a rapid increase in both systolic rate and the diastolic rate throughout the contraction. It is believed that this increase in blood pressure is the body's attempt to get oxygen to the working muscles by forcing open the arterioles.

The speed and magnitude of the rise in the systolic and diastolic rates are greater as the intensity of the contraction increases and as the duration of the contraction lengthens. This does not happen, however, if the contraction lasts for only a few seconds or if there is a rest period of at least a few seconds before the muscle is contracted again."

No mention of any long term heart damage in the article.

You are kidding right?  I bet there are just as many people who have died at a young age, on avg, in damn near any other profession.  Most people in the medical community are clueless in regards to serious weight training.
