Title: best chests of all time
Post by: IceCold on June 27, 2006, 10:07:46 PM
in the next issue of flex, there will be a feature outlining the 10 best chests of all time.  i got 7, but couldnt guess the next 3.

(in no order)

-haney
-arnold
-ruhl
-coleman
-franco
-atwood
-betil fox

the remaining 3?

Those lists are arbitrary anyway, with many of the choices questionable. Szkalak on any list, Katz, maybe Callender and Ferrigno-lot of guys from the 70s. Haney is debatable.

I know they wouldnt add Munzer but obviously his striations set him apart from any other bodybuilder.

Serge also had a great chest but it wasn't as freaky as others on the list.

I cant believe they didnt include Levrone.  It seems odd not to include the man with one of the greatest side chest shots in history.

Uhh, Branch's chest hangs off his rib cage what seems like 2 inches.....

Johnnie jackson must get a mention. Thickest chest ever possibly.

I wouldnt include francos - ugly like the rest of his physique, the unique split doesnt actually add anything to it.

Arnold
Lou
Bertil
Strydom
Johnnie jackson
Kal
Serge
Haney
Shawn ray
Ruhl

Knowing flex and camp perine-Mcgrouch, the article will be utter pap and fail miserably in the authors attempts at making it gospel.

An excellent example of the futility of most lists given questionable choices and order. Yates is on no one else's best chest list. Haney's chest is good in some ways but not top ten.

Oh, and I agree that Dorian's chest, while pretty good, does not belong on such a list

even at his best, his chest was nothing really special, particularly not in the top 10 ever.

Here is my top 10 in no particular order:

-Betil Fox
-Ronnie coleman
-Ahhnold S.
-Sergio Olivia
-Lee Haney
-Gary Strydom
-Franco colombu
-Lou Give Me My 20 Bucks!
-Robby Robbinson
-Mike Katz (looked great in pumping iron)

I'm not saying Coleman's chest is top-10 either; Haney's near or over top-10 because the size doesn't match all the other great attributes and because of all the other greats. Comparing him with Strydom does what exactly?

I'm not inflexible; the shots have me sold on him in the top 5. Not great size but the quality's unmatched. That means putting him ahead of Oliva, Fox & Nubret. Debatable but he looks great.

Oliva is easier.

Nubret is close-similar to Haney-athletic, cut to ribbons, not so big. A toss-up but Haney might have an edge in size.

Fox definitely bigger, not as cut or refined-another toss-up; goes either way on the basis of taste. Someone with more size generally has an edge though IMO.

To put Haney's chest over Nubret & Fox is subjective, more a matter of taste.

Szkalak's on any short-list, with Fox behind Schwarzenegger. Katz was good but not near the top: size without good definition or shape.

Oliva's the most easily eliminated-doesn't have the detail of other guys with size like Fox & Szkalak. Nubret & Haney are interchangeable-Haney a little more size, Nubret arguably more cut.

That list looks good-no recent BBs..

The reason I listed Aaron Baker is because almost all bodybuilders have their chest disappear in the front double bicep. Aaron's  chest was still very powerful in that pose. Don't overlook him.

No franco shouldnt get a mention at all on closer inspection. God awful shape. Don't let a unique upper/lower chest chasm fool you. If anything its actually a weakness and detracts from the muscle.

Mustafa should duly get a mention.

But of course Betil 'mothafhocking' Fox with his crazy ass pecs, Sergio, Franco...

i proportion to their boy, or just general size?

in either list i i dont think arnold belongs at the top....most of the ol school guys chests are really overrated..thy posd differently back then. they stressed more thickness of the chest in the side shots, rather to the pros of nowadays that focus on their arms and shoulders(shoulders being somthing arnld couldnt make look big if he wanted to). also....pros flex their chest now.when before it was relxed so it had more thickness.

I don't agree.  Look at most pros back in the day.  Arnold's chest, for one, looked like two giant slabs just "hanging" there.  A lot of the pros then had thicker chests.  Take that pic of Sergio vs. Dexter for example.  It makes it look like Dexter's chest is a seriously weak spot, yet we regard him as being one of the most balanced pros competing today.  We never would have thought it looked weak until compared to Sergio.  I don't see one pro today that has that "hanging" look.  While all other bodyparts (specifically shoulders and legs) have seen an immense improvement since that time, I believe that chest mass has actually went backwards.  You do have the striations and detail that was never seen before, but not the mass.  I don't think this is something that can be hidden in a side chest shot.  Cormier's side chest looks much like Arnolds.  Mike Katz's chest made him almost look like a woman for christ's sake.

It's a proportion thing. The Ironage guys had no delts in compared with current guys.

the thing aobut arnold's chest was that his muscle bellies were so huge...his pecs went from his neck halfway down his torso....ive never seen anyone else with such long chest muscles...his inner chest line was longer than his face, probably a full foot.
