Title: weight training for fighting...
Post by: texasRUSH on July 10, 2006, 09:50:45 AM
how does it differ? i tried doing burn out sets wiht 45 lb dumbbells for instance on over head presses....

typically i do barbell presses with 225-275lb range..but could only get 25 reps with 45lb db's for the first set and 15 for the second when mimicking the workout i saw tito doing in a video....

any ideas or thoughts?

same size...

i'm stronger in weight moved but repitition wise no...

i can bench 405 but can only get 6-8 reps with 315...which doesn't make sense to me at all.... might be another part of training i need to look into

If your planing on fighting you will need to develop your other skills such as:

agility
conditioning
speed
reflexes
coordination
strength/power (you have good strengh but is it transferable into your opponants mouth?)

different fighting styles is a must: If you are training for mma you should so kickboxing, jijitsu, boxing, and grappling.

Well this is just a suggestion and I am sure you know a lot about fighting so good luck!

I prefer using rest/pause type training.  So for example on bench, using a board at the bottom (sinking in) then exploding it off your chest... I.e. using no momentum from the downward movement...  Benching 405 wont do much for it unless you know when to use your power and can really apply it explosively.

I'm also a fan of some plyometic type drills, kettlebells and band training.

It is always interesting to see the newest "400 pound" bencher come into the club and get dominated position wise by a guy half his size.  Mostly they don't come back, which is sad since if they learned to actually use their strength instead of completely relying on it... They'd probably end up doing a lot better.

You've just discovered your fast to slow muscle twitch fiber relations in pressing movements.
Everyone is born with different amounts. Some can do a lot of endurance and not have much strength while some have a lot of strength but not much endurance. Most fall in between, and different muscle groups can be different as well.

U always want to stay in the 25 rep range rest maybe 30 sec-1min max then do it again. do about 10-15 sets, do this not just with soulders but with all lifts. U aim to bring up ur muscle endurance since after a round or 2 ur power and speed will drop, which is what ur trying to counter. Like in BB u dont really want to be selective with body parts u need them all! The last note is u need to know technique and build up reflexsive resposes by preforming drills with each move till u dont even have to think about it (ie when ur throwing a hook at the chin ur hand gose there automatic) U want ur conscious to decide which move to use but u want ur Subconscious mind to carry out the move. All the stregth size and ect.. wont mean jack if u arnt on it with ur moves.
