the one i had to go to for 3 months was a yuppy gym. no deads,no chalk,no nothing.....tv's all over the wall and when there team scored people would stop there set to clap. I was disgusted! it was a living hell. the dumbs went to 120 and to super set something you had to dodge about 600 machines to get to the one you want....if there wasnt a guy sitting on it reading his book.

like Mike said all Gold's are different, the one i go to is a pretty good sized gym with 2 powerracks. db's to 150lbs. 4 flat benches, 2 inclines a decline a shoulder press bench, 2 smith machines a leg press, a haack squat, etc. they've got that piece of shit Nautilus Nitro equipment, totally useless.

`

That sounds like my shithole.

My Gold's is pure crap. Let me count the ways:

1) Staff is full of dumb kids and lazy people.

2) The bathrooms are always dirty, they never mop the floors, clean anything. Nobody knows anything.

3) The trainers are absolutely ignorant, yet they think they know everything.

4) No chalk, can't have your gym bag with you in the training area ( ???)

5) the place is SOOOOOOOO fucking packed from about 3 to 9:30 pm....

6) There are way too many weekend warriors and young idiots hogging the fucking place.

7) People are on their fucking cell phones while "training"  ::)

8) Management is just as fucking dumb as the staff. Maybe even dumber.

9) We have ONE fucking leg press. ONE!

10) The Smith machine we have is the angled one, not the regular standard up and down version.  :-\

11) Nothing is put away, either by the members, or the staff. Weights and BB's as well DB's are left where ever they please.

12) Tv's everywhere, with fucking Dr. Phil and such on.......(I shit you not)

13) Much of the equipment, I can already max out on. And I'm nothing special...........

14) The benches suck. You can't really adjust them as much as you'd like to. The holes are like 5 inches apart, instead of an inch or two apart.

There's more. But I don't care to write a book right now.

I personally would not recommend them. But who knows, perhaps yours wil be owned by someone with a clue.

I say to hell with going to a public gyms, and going by there rules. Make your own gym and go by your rules. I will never understand with all the money you spend on a gym membership month after month after month. Save up your money and buy your own gym, one piece of equipment at a time if you have too. I use to go to gyms all the time and put up with there sh*t. I got sick of that and bought a power-rack dumbbells, barbells, vertical leg press and planning on buying more in the future. Trust me, save your money.

try to get a weeks pass or see if you can just buy a month (say you are only in town for a month).
Go through your normal workouts and see if they have the kind of equipment you are looking for

Exactly. Some Gold's Gym have issues, like cardio machines always being "out of order", or pins missing from weight stacks.  >:(

just because it's Gold's doesn't mean jack. The gold's I go to is OK. not too crowded, but they could add more dumbells to the rack, and that's my biggest problem with most Gym, not enough heavy dumbells. We only got 130's dumbells.

I was bitching about this last year. The Golds in south Boston SUCKS. It is very nice and modern. But it is a cardio haven. I understand that is how they make there money. But still the place is supposed to be GOLDS.

Just find the cheapest most well equipped place you can. They are all the same now :-[

The old school worlds was the best! I loved that place. Fixed T bar row, db's up to 150. Cardio seperated and a boxing room.Protein bar right smack in the middle with a tv for when you drink your shake. Everything you need. Including the all elusive pull over machine! :( :( :( :(

I completely agree, i have found many ways to improvise with equipment at home esp since i have a smith mahine with high and low pulleys, if i had more room and felt i needed more equipment then i would buy my own rather then paying to go somwhere else and lift. I am gonna be lifting at a nice Golds soon cause i am trying to get hooked up with a job (interview with owner tomorrow 8)) through some conects (former manager and my friends MILF of a mom ;D), it's got two floors and it's very open and spacious.

Training at a good gym beats training at home by yourself any day. You gotta find a good gym though, where people train with intensity and that isn't too crowded.
