Title: PWO shake??
Post by: Mick33 on July 24, 2006, 10:16:49 AM

I lift for about an hour, the whole time drinking down 2.2 liters of water with 25 grams of protein mixed in. Then I do 25 or 30 minutes of interval cardio on the treadmill. My question is should I still be having a shake when I finish or is eating my breakfast immediately after (within 30 minutes) good enough? ???

Do the shake immediately after (or even during) the workout and still have breakfast.  You also want a whey shake immediately upon waking up before you workout.

Get a PWO shake with plenty of fast carbs.

At least 100 grams, a blend of maltodextrin and dextrose seems to be ideal when it comes to regular carbs.

Also have approx 16-20% of protein in the PWO. In this case, approx 25 grams protein powder (if it is 80% protein).

So mostly carbs in other words.

Start sipping from it halfway into the workout, when you're done, you should have drunk half of it, then drink the rest of it.

I would personally like to see people experiment with going higher on the PWO shake.

I know a scientist who recommended me to take 180 grams to get any badass insulin spike.

The total calories for the day would still be the same however.

No numbnuts. I have some nat. p.b., a glass of skim milk and a whey protein shake at 4:30 a.m., and am lifting by 5:30-5:45a.m. ::)

Hey Hedge, I have an old 7 lb. jug of cell-tech. That stuff has some junk in it to spike the insulin, doesn't it? If it does and I take after working out, then do I still need the maltodextrin. Of course when I am done with the creatine, I would use the maltodextrin, but while I am taking creatine? ???

That junk would be dextrose I believe - somewhere in the 75g range.

sheeh...  demanding aren't you :P

To get to the 100g Hedgie recommends, you could make up the rest with maltodextrin (ends up being approx. a heaping tablespoon), but in the whole scheme of things it wouldn't make a noticable difference.  When it comes to post w/o insulin spike, dex & malto react almost identical.

If you really want to spike insulin after exercise, give MyoZene a try:
