I took these shots in Golds Gym, Venice in April 1991. Paul was a friendly guy in those days and I must say he looked unbeatable as a bodybuilder just walking around the gym. I posted these images at the Ironage forum but I thought many readers here might appreciate them. Paul told me not to publish them without his permission. I guess waiting 15 years is long enough.
First photo is Paul standing relaxed. I haven't seen anyone wider or more impressive just standing around.
-
Next shot is a candid photo of Paul having a drink at the fountain in Golds, Venice 1991.
-
massive but unaesthetic
-
no legs or back in those shots, plus you're a fag for taking pictures of another man.
-
Paul never won the Mr Canada title which is a pity. Here I am with Paul that day in 1991.
-
We all thought Paul would easily win Mr Olympia. He never did win that title or even come second.
-
Paul said he weighed about 290 when these photos were taken. He was huge!
-
In all pics massive. But come on. In the first one he looks ridiculous.
-
Are you somehow related to Franco Columbo?
-
How many competitors were there in the 1970 Mr. Canada?
Muscle memory just lists you.
-
Are those injection spots or just plain old bad skin?
-
Paul came to Australia in 1992 and while in Sydney posed at my gym and answered some questions. We couldn't see his legs because we had to go to the contest to see them. Paul had no idea how big Australia was and underestimated expenses, time, for travelling around giving exhibitions, etc., etc. So while in Sydney his attitude wasn't the best. We lost money on the 'seminar'. I wish more bodybuilders would go to college at least for a year so they have a clue about what a seminar is!
-
Interesting tidbit of information: Paul was also a favorite in the gay-4-pay network.
-
Critics say Paul had no back. Look at how big his lats look from the front. Massive. I think he had trouble posing his body to the best effect. I guess he felt he was the biggest and best and should have been given the winner's trophy. I can't argue with him there.
-
I will have to dig out the results and photos from the Mr Canada contest in May 1970. It was held in Vancouver, BC, for the first time. Lucky for me only Philipe Alfani was the only bodybuilder from Quebec. No one came from Ontario. So I won a watered down lineup for the Mr Canada. Ken Rivard came second, Alfani third, Walter Milner 4th, and John Mikl 5th. Every one of those place-getters eventually won Mr Canada except for Rivard who I don't think competed again. A pity because he was huge.
No I am not related to Franco except my dad came from Italy.
There was no drug testing in 1970. Paul got disqualified for testing positive for drugs in the Mr Canada when he competed.
-
No I am not related to Franco except my dad came from Italy.
No wonder, you two look like close relatives.

He should have taken the vic richards route

Great pics Vince
thanks for sharing!!!
-
Here I am with my trophies for Mr Canada and Mr Pacific Northwest. I came second in the arm wrestling. I won best poser and best legs. Rivard won best arms, chest, back and felt he should have won. Milner won best abs and most muscular. James Forsythe beat me in the arm wrestling. I think I lost too much weight for the contest. I doubt my condition would win a novice contest today!
-
I would take your body any day, SANS the arms..

Here is a recent shot with Roger Walker and Don Mahoney. Roger came 6th in the Olympia in Sydney in 1980.

Here I am in 1975 at my last contest in Australia. I came last! Arnold and Paul Graham put me last for some reason!! Ah, the good old days.

looks like you never spent a minute under the squat bar.

Great pics Vince

ditto, cheers :)

I'm still loving this though, but hey, thats the magic of Getbig

Vince got anymore of Dillet?,or any recent pro bodybuilders??
'(sorry to interupt your stroll down memory lane)

We all thought Paul would easily win Mr Olympia. He never did win that title or even come second.
A lot of people thought the same about Vic Richards; but if he ever competed, it would have been the same story

This is from the back. Photo taken about a week before the contest in 1975. I spent about 1/2 an hour a day posing.

Not true at all, I take pictures of men posing nude every day and I am in no way a fag, homo, yes, but not a fag.

I do have some other photos of some of the top guys from recent years but none taken at contests.

To Sarcasm. My best squat was 470 and 10 X 400 deep reps. No matter how much I squatted I never got big thighs like the guys do today. I wrote that I wanted to beat Frank Zane and when he came to my place in Sydney with Robert Nailon Frank told me I don't have to go to Disneyland. I asked why not. He said because I have been in Fantasyland all my life. He and Robert thought it was a big joke. I thought Frank was a jerk. I would have fed off the negativity had I gone to live in California. However, I doubt I would have gone far because those drugs were too big a risk in those days because no one knew much about them. I recall discussing steroids with Ray Mentzer when he lived at my place in 1987/8 and he said most were merely gonad stimulators. Ray died in 2001 so I sure am glad I didn't want to win a big title as bad as he did.

Right after that comment alone, I would have raped Frank Zane and as I took his manhood away from him, I would slowly stare him in the eye after every consecutive thrust and asked him with the most flamboyant voice possible, "Are you ready to get on splash mountain, motherfvcker!?!"

yes it does if Vince was saying that he was going to beat Frank, Frank had every right to say that, Vince is an old delusional jackass, he had an average body at best with no leg development to speak of yet he signs his name Vince Basile Mr. Canada 1970, hahahahaha, what a tool.

You ever go to sleep with your "loved one" to only wakeup in the middle of the night with a massive hard on and the sudden urge to just butt rape them? You probably have and even proceeded to put it in while they were sleeping, to then find that at their awakening, they had no choice but to let you finish and pretend. Did you have one of those night where your loved one woke you up while almost finished inside of you?

The renowned Paul Dillett "bad attitude" he displayed in Sydney in 1992 was also on display at the Maryland State Championships that same year. He routinely waved his hand dismissively to the audience when they didn't massively applaud his every pose and later he used the same "fan-unfriendliness" to scare off anyone interested in a photo or autograph.
Let's put it this way: He acted like Lou Ferrigno if Lou were legally prohibited from charging for photos.

Look, you win a contest against whoever shows up. It still takes a lot of guts to prepare for a contest and get on stage and compete. I don't claim to be big or great. I just won a national title and Paul Dillette didn't win that title. Does that mean anything? Well, it sure as heck doesn't mean I am better than he is. Paul is a giant. He had good shape and great legs. The only thing not pretty about his physique was his veins. Other than that he probably looked better than anyone ever has just standing around. No doubt about that at all. Maybe for him posing shouldn't have been necessary.
I can do without all this gay bashing crap in this thread that so many delight in doing. As if that is supposed to win a debate or point. Some here might criticize the older guys but I still train and I own a gym. I came second in two grip contests in Australia since 2001 against younger guys and no one has come close to my record of 203 pounds in the one hand pinch grip on a machine I made. Any wannabee here want to have a go and see if they can beat a guy who is going to be 64 in September? I will put $1,000 up to anyone from this board if they want to come to Sydney and see how strong they are. If nothing else you might get to see an amazing city with some of the best beaches in the world. My gym is one of the best in the world, too, and has equipment that is found no where else because I designed and built it in my engineering factory.
I have paid my dues and don't feel I have to prove anything here. I love debating but I don't put people down online. Goodness knows nobody has come close to putting me down at my gym in the 35 years I have owned it.

He's working out at the old Golds Gym in Mississauga Ontario canada now. He is getting ready for the Montreal Show next month. He's clocking in at 280lbs. Still a big boy. Hope he does well after so much time off.

I do, after all, have a girl's grip, so I'm sure I'll lose ;D

The thing I love about Getbig is that most of the time guys try to be amusing and often are a scream. I don't care for the putdowns but at times they are funny, too. When you have been around the Irongame as long as I have, since Jan 1959, you get to see a lot of oddballs and characters who 'lift weights'. I don't mind getting teased now and then, either. I prefer if people use their real names and post photos so we know who everyone is. However, on the internet most prefer to remain more or less anonymous for various reasons. The thing about criticism is that it is easier to criticize something or someone than to offer anything constructive or original.
I will try to keep my posts shorter so as not to blow any comprehension fuses that might be taxed. The funny thing about that Jamaican bobsled team remark is that the Weiders started in Montreal and the early magazines up until the 1960s featured Canadian bodybuilders. When they moved to New York and then LA they sort of forgot about the lads back home. I was never featured on a Weider magazine cover. I was once on a Strength and Health cover in 1969 after a trip to Fiji. I wrote an article about Fiji and bodybuilding that Bob Hoffman published.

i agree wiht you matt c. pro bodybuilders on the net are most of time such idiots responding to only to the negative comments when people complimenting them and asking bodybuilding questions dont get answered at all. i think i posted this same kinda comment at least a few times and pros also still ignore it.

I post on the Ironage forum and no one has ever slammed me there. I know what goes on around here and I have been treated okay, considering the lads. I love stirring myself so recognize it when I see it.
Hey, Matt, you got really upset over how they treated you at the Ironage forum. Are you from Newfoundland? I guess it is so cold there that going to a gym is one way to keep warm. I still feel like a Canadian even though I have lived in Sydney since Jan 1971. I never did enjoy having any recognition for winning that title in Canada. Well, I had one summer there after I won. Come to think of it that is a hard title to win nowadays.

You're not allowed to criticize people on IA :-\
-
To Matt. I thought you felt you weren't treated right on IA. That is all. I have never argued with anyone over there.
Some have asked about how Paul Dillette trained. I saw him training arms one day in 1991. The guy was using 35 pound dumbbells. I thought what the! I used 75 pounders on an incline back in 68. Maybe he was concentrating on the feel. I talked to Paul and then introduced him another day to my mate, Ray Mentzer. Ray looked small standing beside Paul. You have to realize that Ray was one of the biggest guys ever and that day weighed a bulky 260 and had honest 20 inch arms that were measured in the past by Arthur Jones. Paul's arms were bigger. Ray wasn't impressed with those veins and commented that they were ugly. Ray was like that.
Anyone who wants to have a workout at my gym in Sydney just say you got a free pass for a visit from me. If you want to meet me then email me first because I am usually out at my factory building equipment. We never have enough good equipment. The lads and even the gals want new stuff.
ovincez@yahoo.com
Joe Gold let me train for free when I visited there in 1968. He just wanted to know how long I was going to be there. I trained for a month. So I extend the welcome mat to genuine visitors and they are always welcome at my gym. Gym owners should never have to pay when training elsewhere. Neither should guys who have won big titles. Of course that is up to individual gym owners and some negotiating might have to be done. It all depends on how guys behave in gyms. Those who are friendly and talk to beginners and give some advice are always welcome wherever they go. Bitter guys bring joy when they leave!

Vince, why do you misspell Pauls surname?

Brutal lies. I've benched 350 for 3 and Olympic pressed 220 for 2.
-
The smartest guy to ever lift a weight is Arthur Jones. No one beat him in an argument, either. We used to think whoever benched the most was King in the gym. Then later it was the guy who was the best with the women! I would rather be remembered for being a legendary fornicator than being strong! Maybe if you were both that made you the King. Seems to me that is what is behind all the putdowns on this board. Maybe I should post some hints about how to meet women? It is far easier to meet them than it is to get rid of them! :)

The thing about criticism is that it is easier to criticize something or someone than to offer anything constructive or original.
FYI: Criticism can be postive or negative (even, sometimes both), although here on GB it is almost always negative. :'(

Damn, I remember Roger Walker. I never would have recognized him.
I thought the same thing, I was shocked.
Vince, have you ever contacted Vince Taylor about his new line of equipment? He has several very unique and specialized units which he spoke about on PBBW. You might be able to produce them for him under a license deal and distribute them Down Under . . . The cost of shipping would more than likely be prohibitive related to selling the units down there.
Decentralized manufacturing is the only way to go.

About gym equipment. I congratulate anyone who can come up with new equipment ideas. Especially if they are original pieces. I design and build things for my gym only. Quite an expensive way to do things because I have an engineering factory full of various machines. It is much cheaper to buy equipment. Larry Scott has designed some equipment but mostly benches and that sort of thing. I have built those things, too. I will look into what Vince Taylor has in his line and make a comment here. I certainly am not interested in building equipment to sell or having staff. No thanks. Welding and fabricating can be a dirty and unhealthy job so the less I have to do the better. :)
About Roger Walker. I was surprized when I saw Roger at a gym equipment expo here in Sydney about 3 months ago. He has lost a lot of size and is bald. Quite a shock. We had a bit of fun recalling some of the stories from the past and Roger has a different version about what happened than I do! So I guess there are some unusual stories floating around about the past. He has been successful in various rep jobs he has had for sporting goods companies he has worked for over the years. He did have a small gym for a while in the mid 1980s but that didn't last too long. Roger is quite an intelligent guy and says exactly what he thinks. He has a good sense of humour, too.

Then later it was the guy who was the best with the women! I would rather be remembered for being a legendary fornicator than being strong! Maybe if you were both that made you the King.
That guy is called ARNOLD

Only if you put out.
Deal.

If you want to win the $1,000 you have to break my record on the pinch grip machine in my gym. You will have to lift 95 kg to win it. That is with one hand on a 2 inch wide polished stainless steel surface.
Here is the pinch grip machine before I added more weights to the stack so it has 100kg of plates now. This was a successful lift of 82.5 kg on my way to doing 92.5kg or 203 pounds that day. No one else has done over 67.5 kg on the machine and it was used in the Australian Grip Championships in 2003.

This is the mirror finish on the pinch grip machine. If you look at the muscle in the right hand you can see the one between the thumb and forefinger is quite large. That is what helps you pinch a lot. I remember showing that muscle to lots of big champions such as Arnold, Sergio and Ray Mentzer, and none of them had bigger thumb muscles than I had. Not that there aren't guys out there with bigger such muscles. I used to make a joke out of it.

You just jack off a lot....

By the way, I can't claim to be the world record holder in this event because it is not recognized by the guys who do grip events. They say I have the only such machine in the world so it doesn't count. How unfair is that? They think if I can do that much I should be able to beat everyone in pinching events using steel gym plates. Well, it seems that grip events are rather particular to surfaces, etc., and until standardization occurs then there really can be no recognized records and champions. There isn't even a world grip association. In the past if you exceeded someone's best you or someone else wrote about it and then it was 'accepted' as a world best. That is all I have done and have invited others to come and try their strength out on the machine. It is a testing machine. You have to raise the stack about 3/4 of an inch for the lever to fall. It works beautifully. The hardcore grip guys don't like that fancy stainless steel but my being a gym equipment builder I prefer using stainless steel for grips because they don't rust. I polished that surface so that there are no imperfections on it and it is absolutely smoothe. I guess I am ahead of my time. The best anyone has done with one hand using plates with a bar through the middle to add more weight is 65kg done by David Horne. That is a lot of weight and I haven't tried his apparatus and doubt I could better his mark without training on it.

That is a really neat machine Vince. And 203 lbs is unreal. I used to pinch 2 45 lb plates and lift those together with the smooth side out. Ray used to try it every once in awhile and couldn't do that. He would just get it off the ground for about a second or two then drop it. I did it for almost a half a minute. Very hard stuff. and that was only 90 lbs. 203 would be awesome. Someday maybe I can try it.

Hey, Keith, congratulations on pinching 2 X 45 pound plates. Not many guys can do that. I can't. So like I said various grip feats are rather particular and some guys are good at some feats but not so good on others. No one is the best on all the feats, by the way. When I posted my record on the Gripboard they wanted to know what I could lift on those smooth Olympic plates. Well, I am not good at those. But give me a polished stainless steel surface and I do much better. So in a real sense your feat is more respected than mine. Nick McKinless who is up there with David Horne in grip feats of strength could manage only 52.5 Kg on the machine in the contest and, like you, has pinched 2 X 45 pound plates with one hand. I did 80Kg that day. I think training for other grip events interferes with pinch gripping. I was going to try to see if I could pinch 100kg one day but lost motivation because of the controversy about stainless steel. I guess humans tend to support what they are good at and not support what others are good at! :)

how did you lose that left leg? Pinch machine accident? Looks like you're about to do the same to your right leg

And I thought "The Pinch Machine" was just another name for my ex-girlfriend.

Vince, I have read your answer to my post . . . I understand the fabrication process is a nasty one. But, have you contacted Vince about his designs?

He looks more like Frankenstein than a bodybuilder. Huge, but thats it.
True, I rather look like Arnold circa August 1st 1971.

He could've went far if he was a good poser
