Title: Sergio vs Arnold
Post by: VY_BUFF on August 01, 2006, 10:03:32 PM
Who do you guys think looks better in this pic?
I think Sergio is totally owning Arnold in this one
Sergio's arms, quads, calves and forearms are bigger and his waist is smaller
plus Arnold is twisting to reduce his 34 inch waist.

It was close, which made it interesting. Overall agree, though Schwarzenegger had the advantage in upper body detail and refinement as well as height.

Id take sergio's built as just having a built (he looks cartoonish and yes, for the chicks!) but arnold as a bb'ing competitor no doubt!

Only thing that is better on this picture is Arnolds biceps.

Arnold has far better conditioning, bigger biceps, balanced proportion, and greater height.

Biased assessement; their conditioning wasn't miles apart that year. Arnold was unbalanced with quads and calves that were too small for the upper body relative to Sergio, whereas Sergio was well balanced overall with better quads, better lat-waist taper and better tris & forearms. Arnold's quad cuts and good posing always helped divert attention away from the size deficiency.

As always it comes down to personal taste.

Unless we're discussing something so obvious as ronnie vs dorian right?

Arnold looks better, the better and bigger biceps. overal better defenition.
Sergio`s waist is small and better than most bodybuilders today, also better than Arnold`s. He did became a three time Mr Olympia because he was a phenomenon, one of the best ever.
Arnold`s calves look small in this picture, in later years they were a lot bigger.
You can`t tell who is better by one picture.

Just look at the clip of dorians arms in the front db bicep compared to arnolds.

Did someone say he had great arms?

How can you say a guy is balanced when his arms are as big as his waist?  Sergio looks totally unbalanced to me.  And his arms though huge have no detail.  I definately think Arnold looks more balanced head to toe.

Depends on your definition of balance; most BB peeps think that arms, shoulders and lats that are big relative to waist size are desirable, in which case Oliva had an advantage on all counts over Schwarzenegger.

Arnold is nowhere near as well balanced because of the size deficiency in his lower body relative to upper, but posing and good cuts always helped divert attention away from the size deficiency. Nor does he have the same degree of V taper, which are some of the most important considerations in BB. This is what makes it so close there even if Arnold had better refinement & quality in that show.

As far as a relative lack of detail, (1) he had better detail and overall better conditioning that was closer to Arnold's at other times than at the '72 show, (2) his arm detail looked a little better in other poses, (3) he used too much oil at the show, (4) factoring in advantages in proportional arm size and forearms his arms were close to Arnold's.

There aren't many shots of Oliva at his best with good conditioning, so it's easy to draw the wrong conclusion.

Arnold 1974... UNBEATABLE! After that year he stopped taking bodybuilding seriously to pursue making real money. he had 5 wins and thought that was enough. Only reason he competed in 75 was for Pumping Iron and he came in much lighter compared to 74 and with no legs. Sergio fans what say you to these pictures? What if he had continued not taken that retirement at 28!? 28!!!

He looks great: as great as Oliva at his best, but not better. Never kid yourself that one was better than the other it just comes down to personal taste.

Very doubtful he'd have exceeded that shape-that condition was achieved in large thanks to the motivation provided by the possibility that Oliva would be at those shows, and AFTER Schwarzenegger as good as he was, refused to come out of the audience to accept Oliva's challenge at a neutral, non-Weider contest.  ;D If he was so much better that wouldn't have happened.  ;)

I am a Schwarzenegger fan, but I can not say that one is better than the other.  Personal taste.  I must say that I think no bodybuilder looks better off season in a shirt than Sergio.

From an aesthetics standpoint yes , from a mass & conditioning standpoint NO .
