Title: pre-exhaust question

in md tony freeman say that before he works out shoulders...he does shrugs, that way his traps are fatigues so his shoulders can be isolated during various forms of side raises.

my question is.......isnt that backwards??   ive always thought and been told that in order to get more work out of a muscel in a certain movement you should isolate it first.  ( example......dpoing flys before becnh...that would create more pec use during the bench, and less shoulder...)

.....so is he right, or wrong????    i would think that working out traps before shoulders would make it almost impossible to hit you shoulders in side raises.

i ask beause i havent workedout traps in over 6 months because when i work them out they get too strong and take over in shoulder exercises.....so if this was indeed true, that would mean i could start working them out again...

The typical pre-exhaust would be to isolate the desired muscle first, so that it would be weakened by the time of the compound exercise.

John Parillo used to have a book where he talked about the traps working very hard while doing lateral raises.  According to the book if you do your lateral raises where you conciously push your shoulder girdle down you can take the traps out of the movement, most people tend to let thier shoulder rise up while doing lateral raises thus allowing the traps to provide unwanted assistance.  Maybe Toney is killing 2 birds with one stone by not allowing his traps to be involved.

I've tried pre-exhaust and didn't see any positive effect on my muscles! I got tired sooner and didn't get the most from compound exercises, I think that it should be used by those who want to cut, I think....

Yates said the same thing; it works for some and not others, like anything.

I usually pre-exhaust the target training muscle before going on to compound lifts and this has given me the best results.

Takes his traps out of the movement as he states enabling the delts to do more of the work.Maybe he also uses it as a warm up before he actually engages in the pre exhaust routine he follows.

:o wow. pre-exhaust works great, and yeah, i think you can pre-exhaust whatever way you want as long as it works for you.

yeah thats what i am saying......i find it odd that he is saying to do something the opposit of what its supposed to be.    maybe its because he is fulling exhausting the traps..??

I train traps after shoulders but then again i don't notice any kind of real workout in my traps while doing shoulders. Just focus on the muscles your trying to work and you shouldn't need to worry, trust me it's true when they say if you focus on the muscles you want being worked it adds more stimulation that mentally and physically can be felt.

if you don't have a mind muscle connection I wouldn't bother with pre-exhaust. Translation: if you are new and you aren't very developed yet don't bother pre-exhausting
