Fred Berger (CEO of HardBody Entertainment and Title sponsor of the Olympia) came on Muscleradio.com (http://Muscleradio.com) in the last segment and announced he was excited to have an alliance with Muscle Radio. He went on to explain about Hard Body Ent., Road to the Pros and title sponsorship of the Olympia. Fred is in the retail business for the home improvement industry which has evolved into service business with close to a thousand employees. He wants to make things affordable for the fans and is looking to attract bigger sponsors for the industry.
They are going to have a live webcast at http://www.hardbodyentertainment.tv (http://www.hardbodyentertainment.tv) of the Olympia. 2 hour purchase for $12.95 or the entire weekend for $24.95 and it will be available on demand after the Olympia. Press conference, expo, mixed martial arts, fit model search, prejudging (men and women), everything will be covered. There will be live cameras around the expo, getting interviews with people and various companies. They also have a partnership with AMI to put on the Fit Model Search - $150,000 in cash and prizes. http://www.fitmodelsearch.com (http://www.fitmodelsearch.com)
Hardbody Entertainment will also be putting out DVDs of the Olympia. Pre-puchase special during and the week after the Olympia for $19.95 and $24.95 there after.
-
Awesome do you know if this webcast would be available for those in Australia?
-
25 bucks for the weekend...
have they mentioned what kinda quality they predict for it? The price is comparable with the PPV where you got crystal clear delivery.
-
TheAnimal - come on bro it's a WEBcast - WORLDWIDE WEB. ;)
It will be high quality because the footage is going to DVD.

i just meant the bitstream. The Charlotte pro had a rough webcast but the dvd was crystal clear. IMO if they're charging foe a webcast, hopefully they'll chip in for a few extra sticks of RAM to ensure some clear pictures. I'll probably buy it.

Given what they've invested in everything thus far I'd say it will be great quality. I'm not sure who is doing the streaming for them. At one point they were talking with a company in Las Vegas that does Webcasting for AOL, Poker Series, etc. I'm confident it won't be 1/2 assed.

Awesome. I'll email them and let them know the Peanut Gallery at getbig will have to start another clown campaign should they screw us :)
I'll prob order the whole weekend package.

Saweet!
I may just have to throw some money down on this.
Going to the Olympia will only get me yelled at in person.
When may we expect a broadcast schedule?
Is this going to be streaming or can I record it on my hard drive for later viewing?
This needs to be a sticky.
-

That is so Fuking Retarted. >:(
Pretty soon fans will have to knock on the arena door with a code knock, to get in and watch it...instead of becoming more mainstream, they arent even offering it on PPV? This is upsetting.. :'(

What you mean you mean there's no code?
You can watch if live on your computer or buy the DVD, what's the big deal with no PPV? Same content different avenue to show it.

Maybe he doesn't have a computer.
He could just psychically upload to the board and the length of the Mr. O will give him a headache.
::)
-
Hopefully it will be ran better than the abortion known as FitModelSearch. That thing is the biggest joke I've ever seen. Very unorganized and comes off as nothing but a scam.
-
A webcast is pretty fucking cool if you ask me
hope it works OK tought or else I'll kick their asses !
I don't want to pay 25 dollar to watch a show where we can't even identify who is the competitor onstage :-\
-
why buy it when im already going to the real thing 8)
-
Fit Model Search - $150,000 in cash and prizes.
You *have* to be kidding me.
While I can't believe they're putting actual money into something like this, I *really* can't believe they're telling hardcore fans (the only ones attending the Olympia) that they are.
These people just don't get it.

I am totally not following this issue. Can someone break it down? thanks.

The primary limiting factor is the upload speed of the internet connection at the point of origin.

Despite what you hardcore PPV lovers think, PPV for bodybuilding generates way more cost than benefit.
Webcasting is almost pure profit and near-broadcast quality feeds are possible.
-
As far as quality of connection goes if they can use the type of infrastructure that bodybuilding.com was able to use for the previous contest webcasts then there shouldn't be a problem.
If they are going to use an established outside contractor and due to the model of pay they will know rough numbers in terms of bandwidth/server quality they need to use anyway.
-
I don't think I'll be paying............
What is the point of buying a show where the winner has already been determined, before the show even begins?
If it was free, I'd watch it. But charge, no way.
-
Even when it was free I was embarassed to watch the shows.
Not because of the homosexual implications, more because the production is horrendous and all the "actors/entertainers" are terrible.
Still, assuming he qualifies I might pay to watch kamali get 16th place

Production is an issue.
The only bb.com broadcast I've seen had a single camera feed, which is very simple to set up and execute. A 2-man crew could run the entire broadcast. For what Lift is describing, though, the software requirements for the Olympia-cast will be far more complex, as will the manpower demands.
Still, though, the primary limiting factor will be the speed and reliability of the internet connection there at the venue. When streaming, if the connection drops for even three-tenths of a second, then the connection might have to be re-initiated. A spotty connection on the day of the show would be disastrous.
The post show in-demand broadcast will have the best quality as it'll come directly from the tape.

yeah, I was going to say something but didn't want to be a negative guy. If the company does drop the ball and the webcast for $25 ends up sucking, they can have every excuse in the book but it won't matter. We will all be forced to mail them samples of random bodily fluids. It's the best way to tell people you're dissatisfied.
-
This will be a true test.
The webcast needs to have the quality of a regular PPV, and not just in the sense of the stream.
But also in sense of overall production.
Don't expect this PPV to be a huge cash cow though, that will come in the coming years, when the production has gained the necessary trust of the consumers.
In a few years, Mr Olympia may very well be viewed live by more people than ever before.

Having it on a Webcast will make DVD sales go down if they are able to copy to their computers. And I bet the Olympia will be on the internet within a week easy for free somewhere. PPV is very expensive to produce. Very expensive. The one thing that may limit the webcast quality is the use of multiple cameras. Quality will definitely be lessened. At least they are doing it though. If you have an old computer with a slow internet connection and low RAM and crappy video card I would think the webcast may not be a good thing. I'd like to see it though just to see the quality.
-
IMO, and this is nothing against the IFBB or anything, being able to put the O on the tv, so I can watch while I post or work, is way better than online. You don't have to worry about losing the feed, you can tape it, you don't have to glue up your computer for 2 hours (ever tried a huge graphic project while watching a webcast? Both suck.
I know the $ is not there and the webcast beats nothing at all.

There have been some feeds from our national TV that looked real good.
The concern about watching the Olympia while working at the same time...
I know what you're saying, the possibilities of multitasking becomes limited - but if you pay a PPV, aren't you gonna sit down for 2 hours to watch it?
I sure would.
And I also believe they should allow for d/l's of the webcast.
I also share onlyme's concern regarding the slow computers.
A way around this would be to sell a limited PPV, for those with limited bandwidth or limited hardware, ie lesser video quality to a lower price.
Clearly, they need to address that situation.
The way the production comes across this first year is crucial IMO.

This is a product that will be suitable for broadband users only.
The in-demand rebroadcast *should* be available as a solid download, but knowing the people who run this stuff, it will be sold as a stream.
That said, there are plenty of software packages that enable one to record streaming media.
You're right when you say that they aren't going to make a ton of money with this thing, but they are going to make a lot.
The NPC should actually take advantage of the available technology and sell annual PPV webcast subscriptions. Just guessing, but they could probably make an extra $250,000 a year, depending on the number of events broadcast.

i haven't laid down on the couch to watch tv in about a year lol...
I can see the tv from my computer. I'm online 24/7. I live in this chair. Any moment there is a commercial or boring part in a show I'm watching, I'm posting or coding.
-

Right.
So for $25 does the buyer get the live stream + the DVD?
Not such a good deal just paying for stream if I wanted to pay for a live stream and sit at mycomputer for 4 hours Id rather watch free porn, would not pay over $12 for intenet porn stream bodybuilding show
-
240 you got a wife? we already know you live on a chair.

I sure hope they have everything worked out prior to the Olympia weekend and that this isn't their first webcast. The bodybuilding.com webcasts have been getting better with each attempt imho. Perhaps they should try and webcast one of the shows happening prior to olympia and throw that one in if you pre-order the olympia webcast...who knows though maybe they have been doing non bodybuilding webcasts and will put out a great stream/show.
-
They should swap info with Wayne.
Trade his lighting secrets for one of those new fangled website things.
-
Come you guys. Think beyond the often archaic ways of the bodybuilding industry. These types of webcasts happen all the time and done VERY well.
Take a look at this site: http://blueroom.att.com/mainstage/index.php (http://blueroom.att.com/mainstage/index.php) to see how it can be done and done well.
If you're not going to the event it's worth the money.

Put more information on various Olympia Weekend stuff here...
http://www.getbig.com/olympiaweekend/2006/olympia2006.htm
The webcast, if done right, will be very cool, and fully paid customers should have access to 7 day archives so you can enjoy it again. 14 Hours for one price is an excellent deal, especially if you cant make the trip out to Las Vegas!
