Title: Does it Matter if Supplements Expire???
Post by: nzmusclemonster on August 17, 2006, 12:43:19 AM
The first place i go to in my supplement shop is the bargain bin to get all the expired supplements. I was getting grief from this guy today who said they were inneffictive after the use by date.

Ant truth to this?? ive always had good results from the bargain bin.

Depends on the supp.

Protein powder that has gone bad may taste like shit, if it doesn't it's probably okay.

but anyways, if they are sealed they may last a year or two longer than the expiry date.

light, temperature, moisture. most supplements are fine as long as they are kept in temperature controlled environments with moderate humidity. White or colored bottles help them last longer than clear bottles, and tablets generally will last forever. I am taking 4 grams of Vitamin C daily right now that expired in 11/05 and not only am I still alive, I am not sick. The only difference when it comes to expired supplements is possible slightly reduced potency. The less potent product can usually be offset by just taking a little more of the supplement, especially because the expired stuff is usually very cheap.

I used to get free expired vitamins from GNC when I was in HS...still turned my piss neon yellow from the riboflavin...they where still good

but yea it depends on where they were stored, how over the date they are, what preservatives if any they contain, what supplements they are, and if they are in liquid form they might contain EDTA which breaks down after the date--thats why a beer has a born-on-date and after 100 days the EDTA goes bad and the beer starts to break down the aluminum in the can=metal beer taste

I once found a bottle of dessicated liver tablets that was over 10 years old.  I figured "hell, this stuff was probably nasty when it was fresh" so I took every last one of them  8)
