WHy would my trainer have me eating 1 cup of pineapple with my chicken and oats in my SECOND meal of the day? Does this serve a purpose other than adding cals? Wouldnt it just spike my insulin levels? I am trying add very clean mass and very little bf? Would you nix it? Would a banana suffice? Any answeers would be reatly apprecaiated!

Back in the day, we would diet on cans of tuna and pineapple. Apparently, the enzyme bromelaise, which is contained in pineapple, helps with the digestion of protein. I'm not 100% sure on this though. Can anyone else chime in on this??
-
actually, I just read that...it's got a ton of benefits....inflamtion, cancer preventative, etc....cut or bulk, I'm using it from now on!! .amazing fruit...why didnt I use it before? Mixed in oats and chx...pretty decent....plus it's low in cals and sugr!! thanks bro!

No worries mate :)

Papaya Enzyme Plus from The Vitamin Shoppe contains Bromelain from pineapple. I use it to get the enzyme benefits without the carbs and fructose you would incur from eating fruit.

I agree though pineapple definitely sounds good. If anything I would use it in a post-workout meal.

Pineapple has a GI rating of roughly 59 depending on its origin. Above 70 is considered high. Accordingly, it's not so much the insulin spike at issue with pineapple but the fructose (which the body easily converts to fat).
-
nope.....not solo w/ chx n oats perfect no insulin spike fructose is nul

thats what i do. I use it as cheating too. Post workout meal is honey dew, watermelon and pinapple. just a small bowl full to eat while i cook my chicken and potatoes. It really makes me feel better. its as if my body is just craving it.

Ive heard plenty of times that Pinneapples and strawberrys are natural fat burners...

mmmm not exactly.

Nobody has ever gotten fat from eating fruits and vegetables. Even the late fat fuck Atkins knew that.
-
The commerical shit in cans and juices are bad though but fresh you can't go wrong
-
Here are a few examples of fat burning compatible foods and negative calorie foods:
· Fruits: oranges, pineapples,

Just search pineapple fat-burning in any search engine and itll give you all the info you need

that is very true...so if your on a serious cutting or pre contest diet you shouldnt be eating any fruit.
fructose is one of the worst things you can ingest...even lower GI fruit is easlily converted to a disaccharide, to triglyceride, to gycerol, to FAT... Not good for Bodybuilders.
also fructose is not a great post workout choice...glucose works much better.
-
when you combine it with other foods, i.e. pro and fat, the gi rating severely decreases...plus the positives far outweigh any negatives....although there are none.
1.5 cup oats
1 cup pineapple
8oz chx
awesome 2nd meal of the day....
-
for digesting protein what's the best? Anyone know about HCL tabs?
-

Fruit in general does not have a high GI rating. Look at a GI table. So that is not the issue. The fructose in fruit is easily converted to fat and simply put, is not a good bodybuilding option.
-
yes the GI of fruit is not the issue...i'm suprised that more people on this board dont have a better understanding of basic bodybuilding nutrition.

The worst sugar you can consume for trying to lose fat is high fructose corn syrup. This is a man made product and used in just about every food item on the shelf in a supermarket. Companies like it because it's cheap to make and it enhances flavor. Even products that appear to look natural have it. This along with refined flour is probably the major reason why people in this country are overweight. Fruit in its natural state, along with it's fiber, will not cause fat gain.

Some protein powders have the enzyme in them. Personally, I don't go out of my way to eat pineapple. I agree that added fructose especially, is a bad thing. I checked the label of one of my protein powders, and it has added fructose. About 11 carbs worth per serving. So I don't think I'll be buying it again. It's better to get fructose from a fruit, not juice or raw powder like fructose.

Don't confuse fructose (sugar IN fruit) with the crap they add to practically everything - High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).
Also, there are differences between sugars. When we eat sucrose (table sugar), our bodies quickly break it down into roughly equal parts of glucose and fructose. Glucose is the sugar our bodies use for physical and mental energy. When our bodies sense an increase of glucose in the blood, it immediately directs the pancreas to push insulin into the blood stream. With the insulin, the body is able to burn the glucose as energy. If there's too much glucose in the blood to be used as energy, the glucose can be changed to glycogen, the body's short term storage energy supply. And if the glycogen pool is already full, the body will turn it into long term storage in the form of fat. Your body can't use fructose without converting it into glucose in the liver. Actually, most of the time, however, unless
your body needs to immediately increase it's blood sugar level, the liver changes fructose into glycogen first. This is why people think fruit = fat.
-
Agree that high fructose is different, but even the natural fructose has its issues. See "Does Fruit Make You Fat?" by the International Sports Science Association"
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/issa14.htm
"If You Have Fruit, Fruit Juice, Or Any Of Its Derivatives, The Following Conditions Occur: . . . Muscle does not have the necessary enzymes to synthesize fructose into glycogen; therefore the liver converts this fructose into liver glycogen . . . Since the liver is responsible for supplying energy to the entire body, once its stores are full, a rate limiting enzyme in glucose metabolism, which is responsible for signaling the body to store glucose as glycogen or convert it to fat (phosphofructokinase), signals the body that all stores are full. If the glycogen stores are signaled as full, then the third way our body uses excess glucose is to convert it to fatty acids and store as adipose tissue. IN ESSENCE, FRUIT SUGAR IS EASILY CONVERTED TO FAT" (emphasis added).

ISSA? LOL
-
Some 18 year old probably wrote that on bodybuilding.com
-
issa may not be the best certification but their complete guide to fitness book is pretty damn good...dr squat knows his stuff.
-
oh i'm sorry. don't laugh at ISSA. ISSA is good. I mistook ISSA with ACE for a minute. Laugh at ACE.

Dunno if it's been posted on this thread.
But the reason why fructose has a low GI, is due to how the body first uses the liver to break down the fructose into glucose.
The liver can also store smaller amounts of glucose, 70-80 grams I believe.
The funny thing is, if you overload with a whole lotta fructose at the same time, the liver won't be able to convert it all into glucose, and it will transform it into fat instead, saving it for future energy.
