Title: help with hitting long head of tricep. (Kinesiology experts)
Post by: Steve314 on August 18, 2006, 03:09:17 PM
The long head of my tricep on my right arm(I'm right handed), is noticably underdeveloped and as a result my lateral head is overdeveloped (in comparison to the long head and left tricep). I have noticed this for a few years now but have not been able to even things out. What excersises can I do that will put more stress on the long head of my triceps? Thanks
Steve

I found this but damn, way to technical for me to understand. I think its saying that if your elbows are high then your long head is less involved? I thought it was the other way around? Maybe that explains why I can't get my long head to catch up. HELP!

"The biarticulate long head of the triceps brachii [1 ] enters passive insufficiency through the completion of elbow flexion when the shoulders are more flexed and abducted or through the completion of shoulder flexion and abduction when the elbows are more flexed. The biarticulate long head of the triceps brachii [1 ] enters active insufficiency through the completion of elbow extension when the shoulders are more extended and adducted (other heads of the triceps becomes more active) or through the completion of shoulder extension and adduction when the elbows are more extended.

When the shoulder is internally rotated, the ability of the long head of the triceps brachii to extend and adduct the shoulder is diminished. The shoulder must be externally rotated in order for the long head of the triceps brachii to assist shoulder adduction."

Any thoughts?

I aint no Kinetics expert (i only did my 1st year ;) ) but i would say its your genetics man....some peoples grow fast, some grow slow and the shape of your tricep goes the same for your bicep, some bi's peak and others don't. you can do excersises that will use the longer head a little more but your still going to be using other sides of the muscle as well. I'd say just do a basic Tri workout, but change it everytime. do all sorts of different excersises with different rep ranges, supersets and drop sets. your Tris will grow, the way they were made to grow. good luck.

Try these
and skull crushers lowering the bar behind your head instead of just to the forehead.

in my opinion nothing hits the long head like skull crushers with an ez curl bar. That makes mine all kind of sore the next day.

This excersise is excellent. Try it using a rope, hooked on to the lower pulley. Works nicely.

Overhead extensions OR lying OR bent over pulley extensions: key thing is having the elbows raised up to around ear level.

Pushdowns, close-grips and dips will not primarily target the long head.
