Title: NPC Tennesse State Championships
Post by: Arnold jr on August 19, 2006, 11:38:39 PM
I went to this show tonight and like all the past years the competition was pretty much what is to be expected for this level of a show. The difference however was that this was the first time I've ever been to a state show where one competitor just absolutely blew everyone away. The over-all winner was a super-heavy weight who looked like he could have been in the top of a national level show and the kicker was that this was only his second show ever. He was full to the max, ripped to shreds, striated glutes, just sick conditioning and as proportional and symmetrical as any top national level competitor.

His name is Harley Tims, looked to be in his early 30's and he looked as if this was what he'd been doing his whole life...very impressive for a relatively new competitor, hell, it was impressive for anyone. Like I said, I was floored by this guys entire build, the second he walked out on stage the crowd went ballistic, no one else had a freakin chance.

If any one cares, I'll try to get some pics up before too long.

Yeah, definately post some pics; I usually go to that show every year but I couldn't make it this time. You live in TN Arnold? I'm from Knoxvillle.
I live just outside of Nashville. As far as the show, you missed one of the better ones simply because of the guy I mentioned. Don't know if you remember the guy who one it last year "Chew" but if he had gone against Harley, I'm afraid Harley would have destroyed him, and that's saying a lot since "Chew" did look good last year.

As for the pics, I'll be out of town all wk on business, I'll actually be in Knoxville all wk, so I'll get the pics up when I'm back home. BTW, do you know of any gyms I can get a wk pass at that want charge me a fortune? My boss is supposed to have taken care of that for me but you never know what kind of gym it is until you get there.

Arnold Jr.
Do you happen to know the name of the competitor who had to be taken center stage in his wheel chair?
Multiple sclerosis or Muscular dystrophy I'm guessing but what an inspiration and a profile in courage.

They had a show in Knoxville the 12th but I didn't get to go.  You guys around Knoxville, where do you workout?  I live up in Clinton, workout at Southern Fitness, it's not a huge gym but it's only 1 to 2 miles from my house.

The man's name I was referring to is Pocha Noel and he is afflicted with multiple sclerosis. Some days he cannot even walk I was told by Bryan Hayworth the Tennessee NPC chair and contest promoter. He also competed in the Greater Knoxville classic taking 3rd in the novice heavyweight. I'm unsure of his placing at the state but it doesn't really matter, he is a champion even making it to the stage!

Here are some pics of Pocha Noel from the Greater Knoxville Classic held a week before the state.
Some days this guy can't even walk, and yet there he is unable to stand fully upright bringing to the stage!
Amazing!

The closest Rush from me is probably 20 miles one way.  The 1st pic for the teenage division, the 3rd guy in works out at the gym I go to (don't know if I should have admitted that).  Another guy from our gym got 2nd in his division, his first names John, think he last name is spelled Hiefner?

Oh no, I saw 'The Ringer'. That player is NOT 'handicapped' or 'challenged' in any way...he has wheels but in a wheelchair...WTF does he need a wheelchair for when he can get up and pose. Is his gait unsteady? ANYONE can put a dull numb expression on their face and pretend to be 'special'. Johnny Knoxville proved that.

 Special my a$$!

& I think he wants too. Mike Z. (Debbie K's Boyfriend) is going to see if he can get a special invite to do the Arnold, because of his prior qualifications.

Faking it?  Ya never know..

Yes we do know!
Pocha is a retired Navy and Gulf War veteran (gunners mate). He was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 11 years ago.
Prior to that it was the basketball court with maybe a little training after, nothing serious.
He also one of the lucky ones...his legs grew just from the running!
The wheelchair came into play about 3 years ago when his balance became so unpredictable that normal walking was no longer an option. He says he also uses it like a shopping cart in the gym, pushing it around and loading what he needs in the seat!
Being unable to stand fully upright during his posing is also a balance issue, if he did he would be on the floor. But as he told me, "I'd hit my poses from my knees if I had to!"
For those unaware MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system. Some areas of the body are unaffected some are hit hard.  Pocha is unable to raise his foot even one inch off the floor when lying on his stomach so hamstrings are such an area that is effected.
Legs are worked with smith machine squats, leg press and hacks where there is a fixed position and balance does not come into play.
The Knoxville show was his very first try at competition and was used as a warm up for the state show last weekend...3rd in both shows BTW. Starting a competitive career at 40 years of age isn't easy under any circumstances.

Of course he thinks what he is doing is no big deal, as most that rise above adversity, they just do it as part of daily living. Well he's wrong, it is a big deal and it shows us all what can be accomplished with the spirit of a true warrior.
The fire is stoked for his next competition. The reception of the crowds in Tennessee lifted his spirit as he had never known.

You want to know what bodybuidling is really all about?
You just read it.
