Zack, it intrigues me how John R. Cash was famous in Europe. I would assume that country music would be more of a music that would appeal regionally to rural Canadians and Americans. You are right about country music of today- it is just warmed over, second rate pop. There never will be another Johnny Cash.

Stevie Tinwood and Eric Crapton? Only kidding. Two great musicians.

I was lucky enough to hear the great man in concert here in Sweden once. Together with the first lady of country, June.
Country has quite a solid following in Sweden, but the hype that surrounds Johnny Cash after his American Recordings, is unprecendented.
I would consider Johnny Cash' status in Sweden as big as any other rock star these days. The crossover appeal of his American Recordings was immense.
Myself, I enjoy both those and the traditional Cash songs.
One of my fave songs that John recorded, is Will the circle be unbroken, not even a country song, but a gospel.

Well said,... What really makes me sick is image seeking wannabe outlaw guys like Toby Keith.

Zack how about tunes like "Jackson" "Tenessee Flat Top Box"? I agree, Johnny Cash's gospel recordings were inspirational.

Oh brother, don't even get me started... ;D
I'll be standin' on a pony keg..
I'm listening to the Wembley 1986 concert as I'm typing this. Wow.
Daddy Sang Bass - the joy and fun John and June had on stage...
It's true Americana music. Just like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Carter Family, Chuck Berry, Kris Kristofferson.

I would have liked them better if they kicked Kris out and added Merle Haggard!

Bro, first of all: Kris wrote so many of those songs.
Secondly, the women needed to have their eye candy I s'pose.
I listened to the Nassau concert, and during the Highwayman song, one verse for each guy, the crowd cheers was slightly different through all the different singers, and the female crowd went absolutely wild with Kris.
He's a ladies man. Don't hate the playa. Hate the game. ;D
For the ladies.
And, the good songs.
"Help me make it through the night" that night in Nassau is a killer. You really need to listen to it somehow.

I'll grant you that Kris has written many a fine tune, but so has The Hag. I just can't stand Kris' singing voice is all.

Was listening to Folsom Prison Blues on the way into work this morning.
