Overrated: Dorian Yates (blocky, f-ed up looking skin, etc.)
Underrated: Lee Haney (Ronnie Coleman before Ronnie was, but better)
-
Charles Clairmonte (sp?) in my opinion was EXTREMELY underrated. His 1993O shape blew me away.
Haney never impressed me, much less than Yates did.
-
Yates was definitely overrated.
Haney too-many are impressed by the sheer number of Olympias but like Yates he had serious balance issues.

Toney freeman if he doesn't get some attention in the next year

Yates for sure. From the moment I first read about him in FLEX mags in 2001 I had no idea what the buzz was about this construction worker. Huge - yes. Shapely - not even close. He was maybe top six in terms of shape at any given show - maybe top six! How pathetic is that? Say what you will about Ronnie - he is always the biggest at his shows and top three in terms of conditioning and structure. Dorian was the biggest from the back, not even from the front, the hardest and best conditioned usually, but not even top material in terms of structure.
Underrated - Aaron Baker. Bertil Fox back in his day. Lee Labrada had no business beating Mike Christian at the 1987 Mr. Olympia.
You didnt even read or hear about him until 4 yrs after he reitired? Maybe top six? Get a fuckin clue Matt C ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
-
yates was not underrated. He came out of nowhere and dominated, he had a couple of bad years but for the most part he was the biggest, hardest guy who was extremely seperated, something we don't see anymore.
Under-rated: Ed Kawak, Ron Love, Phil Williams, Lance Dreher...I could go on and on.

Toney freeman if he doesn't get some attention in the next year
Agreed, Toney gotta make some bigger noise by next year, cause I think for one reason, as a big man, he's gonna look better than other tall guys, i.e paul dillett or gunter

There was a small artice on Yates in Musclemag in the early 90s, but, to most fans, he came out of nowhere when he made his NOC debut and took second. He decided to forego the O that year to come back and win the NOC the following year.
At the time, he blew people away. Haney wowed them with his mass and shape, but Yates changed the game. Haney tended to look soft right up until his last Mr. O, but Yates brought Haney style mass with Gaspari type hardness. Structural flaws? Sure, but Yates was one of the few pros who actually IMPROVED dramatically after his pro debut. The gains he made from pro year 1 to pro year 2 were unlike anything seen at the time.

he should not be getting those high placings, therefore he is overrated.

I followed BBing when Yates came on the scene and that was what I thought too. The mags were going on about this new mass monster. His density, hardness blah blah....and all I could think was "he looks like shit, what's the big deal?"
-

why don't you feel he should be getting those placings? Just curious.

hahahahahahh exactly.

Jay is very big period. Relatively speaking he lacks detail, separation and vascularity. I don't like his structure, his head is too big and when he flexes NOTHING happens. I think he should be 4th or 5th. Toney Freman, Dexter Jackson and an "on" Chris Cormier all fvcking destroy him.But he's got the right color skin and there arecenough people who actually like big mass monsters that he'll keep getting his high placings.

while I don't agree with you I respect your opinion.

That's why it's the G&O board ;D
Let me ask you this though, What If his name wasn't Jay Cutler it was Rufus Porter, and he wasn't a blue eyed blond he was a black guy with nostrils you could stick a quarter in. Do you still think he'd be the #2 guy 5 years running?
-
jay cutler was good but the past 7-8 years he sucks

dude bodybuilding is all about size and more size..and mind you the mass monsters i just mentioned were not only big but they also had decent shape to go with the size they had..so ithink so if you are 280lbs contest shape and you just have little symmetry is much better than a 230lbs with only symmetry and no size..mas monsters rule
-
overated - jay cutler he has one ugly fucking psyique his jaw is huge, his head is huge, he has a wide waiste no back detail the reason he places so hi is because he i swhite nothing else
underated- mike mentzer- people rag on him for his ideas later on in life, but in his day he was immensley popular had a great looking build, only competed two years. finished no worse than third in every show except the 80 olympia
came within two points of winning the olympia his frist try, wasted potential big time.
suck my balls and lick my ass

you just proved your ignorancre just there.
i knew you and hulkster started following the sport only a few years ago - during coleman's reign. you never saw the magazines that acutally featured dorian. you never read a contest report in an Olympia that dorian competed in. you never read other comments from pro bbers saying how dominant he was and that they really had no chance of beating him and how much they respected dorian. you've only seen a few pics of him, eventhough you post mostly pics from 94 and 97 - his worst showings - never pics from him during other shows with a written report by a journalist. big differecen between that and the 'ask dorian' column.

I was there when he came around and I thought he sucked giant asshole. I begrudgingly accept his first two victories but after he tore his bi it was a fvcking farce that he won, plain and simple. And there were plenty of people back in the day that felt the same way.
-

ummm... I have been following the sport since around 1988, well before Coleman's reign.
Were did you get this info from?

should have won the O. a few times, and never should have lost to Lee Labrada in 1992, Levrone in 99, Flex in 00 etc etc.
Shawn should have placed higher in many of his contests IMO.
-

umm. I have some of these magazines and have quoted them before on these threads.
don't just pretend to know stuff when you actually have no idea what you are talking about..
Hell, I have probably been following the sport longer than you have been alive... :P

-

exactly. The same thing holds true with Yates: the fact that he did so well and yet looked like (see above) only ADDS to his overratedness.
His great contest record does not prove that he was not overrated, rather, the exact opposite.
-
dorian makes me sick in that picture. look at those quads, and ugly arms and ugly chest and ugly.................... .. he looks like a pile of shit. man i cant get over how bad his quads were.

I get accusing of unecessarily bashing dorian all the time, but the truth is, I am just calling them as I see them, like you.
In 1993 he looked good.
Most other years, no.

It's nice to have a taper if you want to be considered to have a good structure in bodybuilding.
lol

UNDERRATED= Dennis James, Markus RUhl, Tom Prince, Chris Comier, Nasser
OverRated= Too many to write
-
Overrated: Dorian Yates
Underrated: Darrem Charles
-
Overrated:Jay Cutler (yes he has been 2nd in the olympia many times and has won the arnold classic a bunch---------but when I saw him live at the olympia last year his gut was too wide)
Underratted: Ronny Rocknel (awesome structure, great taper-------he is what a bodybuilder should look like as opposed to the bloated gut, growth hormone gorillas we see on stage all over)
-
Yates deserved his first two wins, no doubt there. I was sitting four rows from the front at the 93 Olympia. When he walked on stage there was a gigantic 'holy shit' sigh from the crowd. He was riiiipped to the bone, symmetrical and every other adjective you can think of.
Shawn was stiffed that year too, finishing behind Flex.
Anyway, point is, Dorian looked incredible in person. After he tore his bis he rode his name for the next few O's and won purely on conditioning.
Aaron Baker was underrated. Great shape, lines and size but blew it most times by coming in too heavy..
Craig Titus was overrated. Looked good before he turned pro, then went on a trip to the land of forgotten waistlines.. Was only good at marketing himself and creating a name with his feud with Kamali.
-
Sonny Schmidt was very underrated.

Underated: Aaron Baker

For more modern times
Underrated: Cormier should have placed better at many shows esp early in his career
Overrated: Cutler and Dex both look great but way overrated (they AREN'T possible Mr. O's if BBing has any morals)
The past
Underrated: Robby Robinson, Shawn "Money Bags" Ray they have the complete package with a freaky look (frnt dbl bi vacuum)
Overrated: Mike Katz, Mike Mentzer they are both bitch like menstruating teens ;D
