GraphicMuscle isn't necessarily better than Kevin Horton - I think they just have a better camera.

?

Yes, I'm saying I do not think the photographers at GM are any more skilled than you are, but I do think they have a better quality camera.  For comparison, check out the pictures from the 2005 Olympia.  I will post some if you would like me to further prove this point.  Exactly what kind of camera do you use?  I'm not saying it's a poor quality camera, but I just don't think it is up to par with the one the guys at GM use.

1ds MK11
I wouldn't blame the camera, it's the operator.

How hard is it to photograph this type of stuff?  It might get challenging when you have to organize people by heights and account for group symmetry and what not but all that this type of photography is is point and click.  Not to downgrade the photos in any manner but I could take the same camera and point and click and the quality would be at least 90-99% as good.  Is all that training really worth improving the quality by just a few points?  GraphicMuscle isn't necessarily better than Kevin Horton - I think they just have a better camera.
I agree completely.  Give me a ten thousand dollar camera, and I'll take awesome shots as well.  Granted, some people have zero eye for photos, but this is no brain photography.  The best is when you see a bunch of flashes go off in the crowd, when a flash is good for up to 15ft or so, meanwhile they're in the nosebleed section.

These days one can get excellent picture quality from even cheap ($300-$500) digital cameras.  It's not just the camera... the photographer does matter, as does lighting and proximity to the subject, etc.

If you compare the photos on GM with the photo archive on many other sites the difference is clear.  On the other hand, many websites do not place their good photos online because they want you to buy their magazines (Flex, MD).  :-\

Well, I'm wondering...do guys like Horton use manual controls or just auto?

I like both Kevin's photos and those of GM, but they do look distinct enough to lead me to believe it was the camera causing these differences:

Can you be more specific about the differences you see. Is it the color, exposure, contrast etc.
Also, how do you have your monitor set-up. Is it calibrated?

I'm not sure if both of these pictures are from the prejudging:

http://www.graphicmuscle.com/photos/655/Men/IMG_9726.jpg

http://www.flexonline.com/05contests/05Olympia/men/pre2/images/aabn0457.jpg

As you can see they are very distinct.

The first shot is from the prejudging the second is from the show though the distinction remains across all the shots. This has nothing to do with the quality of the camera but in the processing after the shots are taken.
Having shot the majority of shows on film - that' shows my age! - I process to achieve a similar look
So as I said before, don't blame the equipment, blame the operator.

It is a pity that most venues do not have stadium seating where you don't have to look up at the contestants. The trick is to get a spot that is at waist height on the competitors. That way there will be little distortion and especially if you use a 200mm telephoto lens. The modern digital cameras like the 16.8 Mp Canon 1DsII is in incredible camera and will produce amazingly sharp photos even under spot lights. The ISO can be up to 1600 and you can use impressive lenses to capture everything and even check how you are going as you shoot.

What images to take requires some experience. Hitting the shots at the right time is tricky, too. Those good DSLRs allow you to take burst mode images of several images per second. You really can't compete with a pro using a tripod who has one of those great Canon cameras. Other digital cameras can produce excellent images, too. A tripod for physique contests is just about required because of the low level of lighting.

While photography is simple being a great photographer is not at all easy.
