"potential' is just another way of saying "you are not good enough"
-
You're always bound to get these kinds of discussions when there are guys half-assing everything, yet accomplishing incredible results.
Be it bodybuilding, or whatever.
I think they're pretty fun. ;D
Michael Jordan is pretty much the only guy who had the total package, didn't lack in any area. He was perfect. He was a winner. Physically, as well as mentally.
Everyone else seems to have had at least one weakness.
Even Tiger Woods.

That too! I find people use it to pretend people are something they are not, maybe for comfort or something.
Hey, has NarcissisticDeity been posting lately or is he on a getbig sabatacle?
ND has basically been look like a fool to the point where he is probably embarrassed to show himself on these boards again.
The growing video/clip evidence clearly proving every single thing he ever said about 1999 Ronnie as being wrong probably was too much.
that and the fact that Dorian's asshole was not loose enough yet :-X :-*
he has to keep working at it ya know :)
-
ps I am sure ND will surface again. He has to keep bashing Ronnie in order to live. Its like oxygen to that guy!
-
I've been having this discussion with more than one person lately on "potential" and who has potential and how sometimes people do the exact opposite of what you would think they would one way or another.
In my opinion, potential means precisely nothing. In Cormier's case, "he could beat Coleman if he tried" and all this nonsense - so WHAT? Does that change the fact that he ISN'T trying? That he is pissing away his alleged but completely unproven ability to dethrone Coleman? Instead of busting his ass in the gym, eating a grocery store, and upping the GH and steroid intake like Coleman has been doing he would rather party year round and do lines of blow off the backs on multiple fitness babes before sleeping with them (probably all of them at once).
Point is, it doesn't mean diddly squat that Cormier has "potential" because he will take this "potential" to the grave instead of to the stage. Coleman will be walking on stage at 305 shredded and Cormier will be puking out 10 pounds of fullness and copius E's and blaming it on a stomach virus.
In short - potential is a MEANINGLESS word. It describes something that shouldn't even really be discussed to begin with.

Legal Disclaimer: I have no idea if pro bodybuilders use drugs. ::)
I pick doing lines off a fitness broad over bodybuilding anyday. I've done both and the first choice was soooo much better.

Please explain how Michael Jordan is better then Tiger Woods relative to their own chosen sport? Tiger Woods DOMINATES

I'm aware that Jordan himself stated back in 97 that Tiger was his only hero...
Still, I believe Jordan gets too little credit for the incredible athlete he was, he was a scoring machine, a team leader, great defensive player. But what made him, was how he always managed to come up on top in every fcuking situation on the court.
I still remember when he went into traffic against Divac, Worthy and Perkins of the Lakers way back, and pulled down the ball, then flipped it up with his left, after what seemed like an eternity.
He was an artist, or rather, The Artist.
Tiger, for all his dominance, never has to deal with the Pistons "Jordan Rules" and other classic anthics. Tiger may be the greatest second to Jordan.
But Michael Jordan is quite probably the greatest athlete ever.
Yes, even greater than Jim Thorpe.
Sorry for not being able to answer your question more directly. I understand those who don't see the excellence of Jordan. But it's a great pity.

Two types of potential:
1/ Deserved-Dillet
2/ Imaginary, no basis whatsoever in reality-Cormier. Even if he trained hard, the usual excuse, I see nothing there to justify the hype or any indication that he would be that much better for it. This type of potential's unprovable thus the rhetoric lingers.

Jordan was consistent, Woods is quite erratic. That's beside the fact as has already been mentioned, there's more to being an all-round basketball player, though that's just an opinion.
Jordan has gotten abundant acolades.
Best athlete of all time? Too many to unequivocally say Jordan.

Matt u post way too much, and always with these theoretical and philosophical posts that try to get all deep into bodybuilding. It isn't rocket science.
-
I hate the word potential
potential means jack shit if the guy who actually has some does nothing with it

DILLET???? Give me a break, he looks liek SHIT, hes right up there wiht Gregory Kovacs.

I think that Chris has a great physique and possibly could have won an Olympia but let's be realistic, Chris has been competing since he was a teen, he has been a pro for over 10 years, if he hasn't realized his potential by now, he probably never will.

Look, Chris DID live up to his potential at certain really significant points in his career.
If bodybuilding were actually objective, Cormier would be a one-time Mr O (99) and a two-time ASC champ. But alas, life isn't fair

agree...If they actually judged a show the way the criteria was written....Chris would be the guy to beat...

Wayne Gretzky is the highest achieving athlete in his field of all time
he makes Michael Jordan look like a 2 bit street baller as far as statistics go
-
blockhead - would you say cormier's lack of reached potential has anything to do with;
a) his cell
b) his 'boos'
or a combination of the two?
-
Potential simply means that a person has a genetic advantage in a certain or more fields, mental and/or physical. To know how big this advantage is, is impossible. Our genetic makeup, our genotype defines our possibilities given perfect circumstances. In practice what we see is our fenotype, it's what has actually become of our possibilities.
The problem with potential is that it can only be wasted. Our potential can never be achieved a 100%, we can try but we might overtrain, undersleep, undereat, etc etc. And while we are chasing one talent, we are neglecting others. Our genotype holds enormous possibilities but we are always forced to only pick a few of those in which to possible excell in.
Cormier does have genetic potential: a great structure and excellent response to training and juice. He might be getting 75% out his potential, whilst Ronnie is probably pushing 90% or something like that. We all know that the difference is made in the last few %.

Yeah, plus he has the tens of ice hockey fans to support him.
All Jordan ever did was win 6 championships, about a million MVP's and Allstar games, an olympic gold medal and an NCAA championship with the tarheels.
But ur right, i'm sure jordan would trade the fact that he is the most recognizable athlete worldwide after Pele and maradona, the billiions he's made with nike for the Ford Canada and Tim Hortons coffee endorsements and the opportunity to coach the phoenix hockey team.

what matt c said
ps Wayne Gretzky retired with 61 NHL records :)

People forget he is only behind Vince Taylor and Ronnie Coleman in career pro wins....out of everyone who has ever stepped on stage ...hmmmm yeah unfullfilled potential huh ...

Cormier is a legend. The guy looks sick, and was even mentioned in the movie John Q. Some may not like his attitude but his physique speeks for itself

Excellent POST, Matt...I wouldn't doubt if Cormier pulls a Dougie Howser off the asses of white fitness/figure ho's...
All I know...in true typical lazy nig nog fashion...he'd rather blame 'The Man' and be preoccupied with baby mama drama, bitches/ho's, sit in front of the t.v. and play GameCast and/or watch BET and text message mark tricks instead of keeping the eye on the prize and staying focused.
I get ragged on for being a racist with my views of Cormier...in an MD about 3 issues ago Cormier had this little tidbit in his article about how his son, Kiviok(gay name) wrestled and pinned to the ground and defeated I quote: "a blonde hair blue eye kid". Uh huh...why couldnt Cormier say how his son simply defated another kid in a great match. Imagine if someone like...Yates said how his son defeated a "velcro haired baboon mouth niglet? Imagine that.
I give Cormier siht because he deserves it...it's just the truth...plain and simple. Maybe I'll motivate him a little if he reads this, which, I am sure he does...

i'll give u guys the inside scoop on pro sports...at least from my own experience...: YOU EITHER DO IT, OR U DON'T! potential means shit

Please explain how Woods is "erratic"!
For 8 straight years he's been ranked #1 the most weeks of the year. For 7 of the last 8 years he's been ranked #1 at the end of the year (he was barely edged out by Vijay Singh in '04 because Vijay played many more tournaments)...
At the end of last year (2005) he'd won as many majors as the rest of the top 10 in the World Golf Rankings.
If that isn't complete an utter domination I don't know what is. Of course golf being a week to week game and a game where you are competeing against a field he can't win all or even half of the time. Let's give Tiger the scenario Jordan had in his sport, Tiger against any other golfer in the world match play best of 7. Would he ever lose, NO!
Get back to me when you catch a clue...

I've been posting less because I've been working more . and the funny thing is that you have zero confidence in your opinion being right to leave it alone to stand on its own merits. but in almost every tread you post in it all comes back to you forcing your tired opinion and its because you lack confidence in it and have to remind everyone.
And you keep clinging to the argument ad populum. if everyone says its so it must be. thats pathetic and baseless , and the only thing you've proven in these debates is how much of a zealot you are and how obsessed with me you are , if my assesment & opinions were so out of the loop and so absurd you would have simply laughed them off a long time ago and would have continued on with a quiet confidence knowing you're right and your insistance to do otherwise proves my point ;)
Anyway Cormier had the potential to be the greatest bodybuilder , he has all the requirments , size , aesthetics , structure , balance , proportion , no real weaknesses etc , but where he and Flex Wheeler failed to reach their full potential was in thinking that once the work-out was over thats was it and its not
You put Dorian Yates or Ronnie's sensibility in Cormiers head when he was young and he would probably never be beaten by anyone . the old addage applies if you're doing X then your competition is doing X and Y and Z . While Chris is smoking blunts with Victor Martinez , Dorian Yates was measuring his food . while Chris was not giving 100% in his work-outs becuse he was out till 3 a.m. clubbing Ronnie Coleman was setting new standards for work-out insanity
Chris made his choices and he never was able to stay as focused as Ronnie or Yates , it reminds me of something Mike Tyson said once , he said when he was young & hungry ( and poor ) he would eat nails and he would do anything to succeed , but after he was super rich he said its extremly hard to get out of bed in your masion to go running at 5 a.m.
Chris became complaciant and it cost him. he could have dominated the sport with Ronnie in it but the sport is filled with guys like Chris and always will , you need more than just a great physique to be the greatest.

Very good post. It seems like the real true champions have something inside them that makes defeat totally unacceptable, where losing is almost worse than dying. Michael Jordan didn't just "want" to win. He had to win. There was no other option. Dorian looked at each workout as a brick he had to place into the wall of winning the Olympia. McGough tells a story of how Dorian wouldn't drink New Years Eve because he had to work legs the next day and wanted to be sharp. That's ten months from the Olympia but Dorian had to do everything possible even then to assure success. Chad Nichols says he knows Ronnie never cheats on his precontest diet even once. The thought of cheating never even enters his mind. I like Chris and think he probably should have won the Arnold at least once, but I don't think it really eats at him like it would a true champion. I believe he wants to win, but he feels his life is pretty good even without the victories and thus he won't make the sacrifice to push himself to the next level. It's sad, he really could have been one of the best.

"Debating" that Dorian Yates is better than Coleman is not too far off from "debating" that I am better than Coleman in my opinion.
Matt C: you are a moron.
The End.

My point was not that, moron. I have no problems with anyone saying that they think Ronnie is better. I don't agree with it, but I can accept that opinion. But you, a complete nobody, comparing yourself to a six-time Sandow winner is pathetic. Not even a top NPC Nationals competitor would say something so idiotic. At their respective bests, either Ronnie or Dorian would edge out the other by a very slim margin. You saying that Coleman is as far ahead as Dorian as he is from you is like saying that you're as good as Dorian. You poor, pathetic little internet loser! ::)
I think it's safe to say that more than 50% of members here would agree that the Dorian/Ronnie debate is silly since Ronnie is so far ahead of Dorian
When Gallileo said the Earth was round, 99.9999%+ of all people disagreed with him. And guess what? He was right and everybody else was wrong. Statististics and polls don't mean shit when it comes to assessing the truth.
as he proved once again tonight.
He didn't prove shit, since Dorian didn't compete tonight and Dozer never was defeated by Ronald. ;)
